Making a grand return in 2022, The Long Road announces the first batch of names today, for what is set to be its biggest year yet. Almost 30 acts, including the likes of The Cadillac Three, Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, Brandy Clark, LOCASH and more are set to arrive at Leicestershire’s stunning Stanford Hall estate between 26-28th August 2022. Appealing to music fans from all around the UK, The Long Road promises to be an unrivalled feast of a festival. With a welcoming celebration of the finest handpicked artists, the three day camping event gathers together a range of alternative music fans for a joyous weekend in the great outdoors. Expect a whole world of displays and extra events to entice every kind of American muscle car and vintage motorcycle enthusiast, as well as an unbeatable array of vendors to cater to craft beer drinkers and foodies with a taste for the famous southern hospitality. Kicking off today’s first line up announcement are the Sunday main stage headliners The Cadillac Three. Riding high from their 10 year anniversary tour, they’ll be perfectly rounding off a sunny weekend with their fuzzy freewheeling psychedelic jams. Flying the flag for country music’s enduring legacy, is the Grammy Award-winning Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives. Equally authentic and flamboyant in style, Marty is now being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and knows how to deliver a festival set for the ages. Amongst the many award-winning acts found exclusively on The Long Road line up, LOCASH will be making their festival debut here next year as an English exclusive, next to the accomplished story-telling songwriter Brandy Clark. Alongside her is an exciting crop of Country’s leading women from around the USA, including the likes of Lauren Alaina, Lindsay Ell, Sara Evans, Gretchen Peters, Sunny Sweeney and Cassadee Pope. The Long Road is excited to welcome the passionate singer-songwriter Rissi Palmer, host of her Color Me Country show on Apple Music Country, where she shines an important light on the often marginalised Black, Indigenous, and Latinx histories of the genre. Elsewhere across all four stages of immersive musical discovery, more names are revealed, including Sarah Darling, Lilly Hiatt, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers, Della Mae and more. Always a rare opportunity to see so much American talent in one place, and The Long Road is just as proud of the UK and Ireland’s homegrown scene. A variety of alternative sounds from bluegrass, folk and UK country, come courtesy of Hudson Taylor, Callum Pitt, Morganway, Jade Helliwell, Jess Thristan, Flats & Sharps and Noble Jacks. The festival made its debut in September 2018, and now the family-and dog-friendly event takes a step forward into the August Bank Holiday weekend for the first time. Getting to know your CMA Songwriters

After much speculation as to whether it would go ahead this year, the CMA Songwriters, that takes place the night before Country 2 Country, has been announced! So far four names have been announced in what appears to be another stellar line-up. A couple of names jumped out to me, being the songwriting fan that I am, Shy Carter and Ashley Gorley – two of the very best in the business – but some won’t have heard of these guys before, though I’m sure you will have heard their songs! Ashley Gorley When it comes to hit songwriters, there’s no one more qualified than Ashley Gorley who has made history by racking up 55 #1’s! Now he won’t have time that night to play them all of course but you’ll certainly hear hit after hit from this esteemed writer who began his career as an intern, typing up song lyrics for demo’s that staff writers at publishing houses across Nashville had submitted. Gorley set up his own publishing company called Tape Room Music and his writers have themselves amassed 27 #1’s since it’s inception in 2011. As for Gorley himself, he has been named ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year eight times! Some of his number one’s include ‘Then’ by Brad Paisley, ‘You’re Gonna Miss This’ by Trace Adkins, ‘Good Girl’ by Carrie Underwood and ‘Play It Again’ by Luke Bryan. He’s also had chart toppers sung by this years C2C artists including Darius Rucker’s ‘Won’t be Like This for Long’. The show is worth attending just for Gorley alone but with three other prolific writers still to introduce you to, I think you’ll be in for a good night! Caitlyn Smith I wouldn’t be surprised to see Smith announced as one of the spotlight stage artists, she is a fantastic singer songwriter with a couple of studio albums of her own under her belt. However, let’s take a quick look at her writing credits for other artists because honestly, these names are impressive! One of her earliest cuts came in 2013 when arguably the King and Queen of country, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, reunited on ‘You Can’t Make Old Friends’ a song Smith wrote with Ryan Hanna King and Don Schlitz. Later that year Cassadee Pope would release ‘Wasting All These Tears’ as a top 5 single before Smith’s collaboration with Cary Barlowe and Steve Robson ‘Hypnotizing’ would be placed in the TV show Nashville. It wouldn’t be her only song to feature on the show with the main character, Juliet Barnes played by Hayden Panettiere, singing another of her songs in the second season, ‘Don’t Put Dirt On My Grave Just Yet’. Slightly outside of the country genre, Meghan Trainor and John Legend took her song ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You’ to the number one spot on the US Adult Top 40. Russell Dickerson A graduate of Nashville’s prestigious Belmont University, Dickerson broke onto the scene in around 2016, opening for the likes of David Nail and Thomas Rhett. His breakthrough single ‘Yours’ was a massive hit, topping the charts and being certified 3x Platinum. It’s one of the wedding songs of the decade, often being used as a first dance song. His next three singles would all go on to claim the top spot and certify Dickerson as a serious contender within country music. He is performing on the main stage at C2C but this is a chance to see the hit-making heart throb in a more intimate setting where you’ll hear the stories of how those songs came about. He’s sure to be a fan favourite amongst the UK crowd. Shy Carter I’m really excited to see Shy Carter. He’s one of the most versatile songwriters you’ll meet, he’s written for a range of artists across genres and is a record producer and rapper. Outside of the genre, he’s written for Meghan Trainor, Charlie Puth and Jason Derulo and that pop sensibility within his songwriting he carries across into his country music too. One of his breakthrough hits in the genre was ‘Stuck Like Glue’ by Sugarland, which he co-wrote with the duo along with Kevin Griffin from the band Better Than Ezra. He went on to write for Keith Urban including ‘Never Comin Down’ from the Graffiti U album and setting a slightly different tone, he wrote ‘Speak to a Girl’ from Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s last album. He has also written for Kane Brown and Chris Janson. Carter is a performer in his own right, having released a number of singles himself and following C2C he’ll be heading out on tour with Sam Hunt.   To stay up to date on the latest country music news, please register to receive our newsletter here. Country 2 Country: Artist fact-file

Many of the headliners and main stage acts have now been announced for Country 2 Country 2022. Although we’re still expecting more surprises and pop-up stage announcements, we thought we’d bring you more information about each artist and a recommended song to whet your appetite for what’s to come!  Miranda Lambert  Earlier this year we interviewed Miranda Lambert alongside Jon Randall and Jack Ingram as together they released ‘The Marfa Tapes’. It was the most authentic country album I’ve heard in a long time, the songwriting was incredible. On the other hand she’s teaming up with Elle King to deliver a brilliantly, catchy country-pop tune. Her versatility as an artist and writer within this great genre is what keeps her relevant and exciting. With new music being teased all the time, Lambert is bound to deliver a night to remember at C2C with a mixture of fan favourites and new material!  Recommended song: If I Was a Cowboy  Darius Rucker  Originally of the band Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius has had a long and varied career, but it’s his success as a solo country artist that has led him to once again headline C2C. Since 2002 he has released seven studio albums and had nine number one singles including the 9x Platinum cover of ‘Wagon Wheel’. Whether he’s fronting a band or going solo, Rucker is a true entertainer and will really captivate the crowd with his set at C2C, just as he did last time.  Recommended song: It Won’t Be Like This for Long  Luke Combs  Luke Combs has risen to the top of this genre as fast as a firework, his colourful music bursting over the heads of his peers. His first 11 singles all topped the country airplay charts with his latest two still on the rise when we went to print. He too has played at C2C before and his down to earth approach makes him relatable both in song and on-stage, building up a rapport with the crowd seamlessly. I was in Nashville at the Grand Ole Opry when they asked him to become a member, the emotion was clear on his face as tears filled his eyes. He is a man that loves the genre, it’s history and it’s roots, but he knows he’s the future of it too!     Recommended song: Forever After All  Kip Moore  Kip Moore is a real entertainer when he gets up on stage and is a fan favourite amongst the UK crowd. Pre-covid he came over as much as he possibly could, often saying how he and his crew came over at a loss but they came anyway due to the fans. That’s the kind of dedication we like to see from an artist and as I say he puts on a high energy performance. You have to go back to his debut album to find his biggest hit, his only number one and our recommended song but nonetheless, his records are full of charisma. His set is bound to get you up out of your seats at C2C.   Recommended song: Somethin’ Bout a Truck  Brett Young  Young has had a busy year, he released his third studio album back in June followed by his christmas album in October. His brand of country-pop, West Coast-meets-Southern sound, dubbed the “Caliville” style coupled with his honest lyrics, has captured the hearts of fans all over the world. He is one of the genres radio stars having racked up 7 consecutive chart toppers on the Airplay charts. Young is bound to be one of the most talked about artists at the festival.  Recommended song: Here Tonight  Ashley McBryde  Ashley has wowed C2C audiences for two years in a row! In 2018 she played in the indigo as part of the BBC 2 pop-up stage and captivated the room, she eclipsed what happened on the main stage as all who was there, never stopped talking about her incredible set. The following year she made the leap to the main stage and impressed once again with a full band show. With the nod of approval from the likes of Garth Brooks and Barack Obama, McBryde is one of country music’s finest assets.  Recommended song: Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega  Russell Dickerson  A graduate of Nashville’s prestige Belmont University, Dickerson broke onto the scene in around 2016, opening for the likes of David Nail and Thomas Rhett. His breakthrough single ‘Yours’ was a massive hit, topping the charts and being certified 3x Platinum. His next three singles would all go on to claim the top spot and certify Dickerson as a serious contender within country music.   Recommended song: Blue Tacoma   Scotty McCreery  Scotty has been trying to come over to the UK for a while now but something always crops up to scupper his plans so it will be great to finally be able to give him the warm British welcome he deserves! A former American Idol winner, McCreery has been impressing the country community for the last ten years now, releasing four albums, 3 of which topped the albums chart and having a string of chart topping singles including our recommended song ‘Five More Minutes’.  Recommended song: Five More Minutes  Flatland Cavalry  This was the name that raised the most questions when the line-up was announced with many being unfamiliar with the bands music. A Texas country outfit, Flatland Cavalry have released three albums now, they have an authentic sound to their music and you’ll be tapping your foot along to their music. They’ll certainly bring a little honky-tonk flavour to the O2.  Recommended song: Country Is…  Runaway June  Runaway June are graduates of the C2C pop-up and spotlight stages, impressing fans before with their vocal harmonies and captivating melodies. The group only have one full length album but have released a couple of EPs and toured with Carrie Underwood. The group had a slight change in line-up last year when Hannah Mulholland left the group and was replaced by Natalie Stovall.   Recommended

Top Weekend: The British Country Music Festival

The British Country Music Festival was a weekend like no other. A celebration of live music and of homegrown talent. Marina and Martin from Fit The Bill launched the festival three years ago and despite Covid scuppering their plans last year, the festival has grown since 2019 and a community, a family friendly environment has been created. Held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, the three day festival featured an array of familiar faces on the British scene as well as some new talent, and showcased the various sides of what country music can be – meaning there was something for everyone. The glorious ballrooms and past theatre stages played host to fiddles and guitars, banjos and steel players. As one stage ended, another began and it was timed perfectly, with good variety. From the energy and volume of Robbie Cavanagh to the stripped back acoustic set-up of storyteller, Hayley McKay; the event flowed seamlessly. Though I had heard many of these artists before, there were some new names that popped up that impressed me, the likes of Ben Holland and Tommy Atkins to name just two. A name that I had heard before but didn’t know too much about was Jess Thristan. Her band were tight and her voice was powerful. She built a rapport with the crowd instantly and was a natural on stage. Her songwriting was exceptional – it’s easy to see why Shania Twain added her to her Spotify playlist when she’s writing such fantastic songs. Over on the main stage in the Empress Ballroom perhaps my favourite UK Country artist, Katy Hurt opened the main stage on Saturday evening. It was her first full band show after the pandemic and if there was any nerves you couldn’t tell. Hurt’s vocals have always been good but I think that’s the best I’ve ever heard her sing. Songs such as ‘Unfinished Business’ were delivered delicately with emotion packed into her voice whilst uptempo tracks such as ‘Revved Up’ had people up out of their seats dancing and swaying along. The Saturday night was all about girl power as Elles Bailey kept the energy levels high as she followed Katy Hurt and Wildwood Kin with their gorgeous harmonies captivated the audience with their unique sound as they headlined the show. The final day was tinged with a slight sadness, it was so good to finally get out and enjoy live music again in a safe manner and it felt like it was over too soon! Tim Prottey Jones opened the show. He’s an interesting artist, writer and producer who has had a varied career on stage in musicals and as a member of The Wandering Hearts. His solo work sets him apart from the rest of the field, he has the potential to crack the UK and the US scene and my only criticism is that I would have liked to have seen him a little higher up the bill. Martin Harley and his band stepped out on stage and mesmerised everyone. The level of musicianship on display was world class and his smooth, bluesy voice delivered every line elegantly.     As announcer Matt Spracklen put it, there were a few Americans who ‘slipped through the net’ and entertained the British crowd. One of the performances of the weekend was Candi Carpenter. Originally from Ohio and now residing in Nashville this was Carpenter’s first trip to the UK. She was the only true solo, acoustic performer that day and she commanded the stage with her down to earth humour in between songs, her power house vocals and captivating lyrics. She began with a song that she had collaborated on with Brandi Carlile, and moved on to perform a number of unreleased tracks that she hoped to test out on the crowd; she had them hanging off her every word. She also showed why she was a champion yodeller as a child by performing a little yodel – I’ve never heard anything like it, I was impressed! Carpenter won the hearts of the Blackpool crowd and this was evident from the standing ovation she received. Afterwards, the audience queued for a good hour or more as she took time to meet everyone of her new found fanbase. It was a real treat to see her UK debut! It was a wonderful atmosphere, the live music was of the highest standard and the performers and event organiser did the UK country scene proud by the delivery of such a fantastic weekend. Tickets are already on sale for next years event which takes place between the 2nd and 4th September.   To stay up to date on the latest country music news, please register to receive our newsletter here. The British Country Music Festival

THE BRITISH COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL 3-5 SEPT 2021

There is a buzz in the air as The British Country Music festival returns to Blackpool for it’s second year! After the past 18 months, the impact it has had on the arts in particular, never has there been more of a need to celebrate and support our homegrown talent and that’s exactly what Marina and Martin Blore intend on doing for years to come at The British Country Music Festival. With headliners Nathan Carter, Wildwood Kin and Lisa McHugh all ready and raring to go, the stage is set for an incredible weekend in the North of England. I was keen to catch up with Marina to delve into the passion behind the festival and talk through the trials and tribulations of putting on an event during Covid times. The festival has been going for a few years now, where did the original idea come from? What ignited that passion to support British Country artists in particular? It’s actually only been going for one year. We are a husband and wife partnership and Martin and I launched The British Country Music Festival through our company Fit The Bill Ltd in 2019. Of course, we missed 2020 due to the pandemic, but we are back for our second year in 2021. The idea for the festival came from a previous event we used to produce in Liverpool from 2016 to 2018 called Folk On The Dock that attracted up to 80,00 people over three days. We discovered so many new artists that crossed over from folk into country, Americana and roots and we could feel the groundswell in popularity of what was a new approach from UK artists to country music. Gone were the references to American parlance and they were being replaced by beautiful lyrics that were relevant to the British Isles. We were beginning to hear our own brand of country music. That prompted us to provide a platform for homegrown, singer-songwriters to grow their audience, unite them and show the rest of the world the amazing new country sounds that are now easily identifiable as being from the UK. Back in 2016 we booked Robert Vincent to perform at a fringe venue for the Liverpool festival and two years later he headlined on the main stage. Now he is backed by the wonderful Bob Harris. Wildwood Kin were on our main stage at Royal Albert Dock in 2017 and The Luck and Pete Riley performed in 2018. All these artists are making huge waves now and time has proved that UK country music is fresh and it is making Nashville and the rest of the world sit up and take notice. When we launched The British Country Music Festival, many in the industry thought we were mad. They said we needed international artists, that British country music was not enough to stand alone and attract a festival audience. But we are delighted that we stuck to our principles and that the numbers attending the festival this year have grown by 50% with many retaining tickets for year two that they bought at the venue in 2019! Whilst our audience appreciate the headliners, above all, they are music lovers and they are very keen to discover and support new artists and that is what TBCMF delivers. How has Covid affected your plans for the festival over the last couple of years and how have you adapted to those obstacles? We were one of the first to cancel 2020’s event back in March last year and I think that was the right move, as the early notice and clarity of message was appreciated by our ticket holders. Whilst it has been an amazingly difficult time for many festival organisers, we have suffered less than most due to our commitment that 98% of our artists are from the UK. With only two international artists this year; Candi Carpenter and Juna N Joey, we have not been reliant on travel restrictions and quarantine issues, as almost our entire programme are all travelling from the UK, including our headliners Nathan Carter, Wildwood Kin and Lisa McHugh. Understandably, ticket sales over the last 18 months have reflected the mood of the nation in line with the impact of Covid-19. When restrictions were lifted sales increased and when lockdown came again, they paused. However, the mood now appears to be one of cautious optimism. The majority of UK citizens will have been offered both vaccinations by September and it looks like our festival goers are returning to the country music community, where maybe they feel safer than they would with other music genres. What impact do you think the festival has had on the homegrown talent and the country scene here?  Whilst it’s still early days, I think The British Country Music Festival has proved that we clearly have an abundance of UK country and Americana singer-songwriters capable of taking on the best of the rest of the world. Look at the success of The Shires, Ward Thomas and Yola across the pond, whilst it can only be a matter of time before Twinnie takes on Shania Twain in America. We are also providing the opportunity for homegrown artists to headline a country music festival, something that has not been prevalent at many other country events where, more often than not, American artists still dominate. We are also proud of the fact that out of six headliners over two years, five have been female led. Again, this is something not achieved at many other country festivals in either America or the UK. We signed up to PRS Keychange initiative committing to 50:50 gender balance in our programming by 2022. We achieved it in our first year, back in 2019. We have not had to shoehorn them in, they have all been there on merit and it shows what a wealth of incredible, female singer-songwriters we have in Great Britain. All the artists that performed in year one at TBCMF definitely increased their fanbase, with managers and agents confirming new fan faces they had not previously seen at other

ACM Awards

ACM Awards showcase the heart and soul of country music!

The ACM Awards put on a fantastic weekend of music, starting on Saturday night with the ACM Lifting Lives Concert which saw New Male Artist of the Year, Jimmie Allen perform alongside Cassadee Pope, Tenille Townes and Kameron Marlowe to name a few. The ACM’s philanthropic arm donated the funds raised from the pre-taped lifestream to ACM Lifting Lives COVID-19 Response Fund and Packages From Home. This was followed on Sunday night by the three hour ACM Awards show which showcased the very best in country music. Unlike many award shows the ACM’s provided performance after performance and hit after hit, they showed the world how we could come together in the midst of a pandemic, how the world can be united through song. In between performances Mickey Guyton and Keith Urban lead the introductions, they managed to show their passion for the genre they love whilst getting straight to the point, meaning the entire night was completely engaging! The first award of the night was awarded to Old Dominion as they retained their Group of the Year status. Chris Stapleton, who took home the award for Album of the Year, performed ‘Maggie’s Song’ with Miranda Lambert who had a busy night as she opened the show with a duet with Elle King at The Ryman and later joined Jon Randall and Jack Ingram for a rendition of ‘In His Arms’ off their upcoming record ‘The Marfa Tapes’. The most nominated Female country star in ACM history really showed the world why she’s the reigning Queen of Country, despite not taking home a prize at this years ceremony. Instead, it was Maren Morris who took home the award for Female Artist of the Year and after performing a magical, romantic duet with husband Ryan Hurd just minutes earlier, was visibly emotional as she accepted the award for Song of the Year for ‘The Bones’ without her co-writers Jimmy Robbins and Laura Veltz by her side. Gabby Barrett showed why she deserved to take home the award for New Female Artist of the Year as she performed her song ‘The Good Ones’ featuring a prominent fiddle that came into it’s own in the iconic Bluebird Cafe. Dierks Bentley and War and Treaty paid tribute to JT Gray, the owner of The Station Inn before they performed at the iconic bluegrass venue. Meanwhile, Carrie Underwood teamed up with Cece Winans to showcase their powerhouse voices on a gospel medley which features on Underwood’s My Saviour album. Despite watching it from home, the performance gave us goosebumps, with many of their peers tweeting the same. The two ladies stole the show! Luke Combs accompanied by a socially distanced string section donned a smart suit as he sung Forever After All. The sound was awe-inspiring, truly breathtaking. It was a shock that Combs failed to take home a prize on the night. Back at the Bluebird Cafe, Brad Paisley showed up to surprise Jimmie Allen as they sang their duet ‘Freedom Was a Highway’. Martina McBride announced the award for Single of the Year which went to Carly Pearce and Lee Brice for their duet of ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now’, the last song that producer Busbee worked on. Brice and Pearce had already picked up the prize for Musical Event of the Year and have now become the fourth male/female duet to win single of the year. There were a few throwbacks on the night too as Alan Jackson performed a classic hit and Blake Shelton showcased how far he’s come in the past twenty years as he performed his debut single ‘Austin’, followed by his latest single ‘Minimum Wage’. After performing at the top of the show, Thomas Rhett, who is days away from releasing his fifth studio album took home the award for Male Artist of the Year, beating tough competition from the likes of Luke Combs and Eric Church. He lost the title of Entertainer of the Year though to Luke Bryan who unfortunately couldn’t be in attendance due to a positive covid test. Both ACM Awards hosts took to the stage to perform as well as Mickey Guyton performed ‘Hold On’ a song that featured in the film ‘Breakthrough’ and Keith Urban gave a rousing performance of his song Tumbleweed, with a camera attached to his guitar so we could see his insane playing abilities. Kelsea Ballerini and Kenny Chesney took to the stage together to sing ‘Half Of My Hometown’ in a debut performance of the song, their voices blended so well together as if they’d been duetting together their whole lives. Despite the star studded performance, that showcased the live industry that we’ve been missing this past year, there were stark reminders that Covid 19 is still very much dictating our lives as a depleted Little Big Town performed on Broadway without Phillip Sweet who was isolating due to a positive covid test. Nashville really lived up to its name of music city as cameras panned across the banks of the river Cumberland as various artists such as Lady A and Ashley McBryde rocked out on the riverfront stage, whilst Underwood gave us a taste of gospel at the Grand Ole Opry, whilst traditional country rang out from the Mother Church of Country Music in the form of Alan Jackson. The sound quality was impressive throughout the night, so credit should be paid to the technical teams involved too! The 56th ACM Awards were the most entertaining awards ceremony I’ve ever witnessed, the performances really captured the heart and soul of what country music is and from across the pond I felt like I was there! I am anxiously awaiting the trip!” Jessica Lynn is well-known Stateside for the spectacle and quality of her live shows and stagecraft, and her TV specials, as well as the energy and excitement of her performances. She has often been called “Shania’s natural successor” and described as “America’s new Country Music Sensation”. Her music does indeed appeal to fans of Country, Country Rock and Americana, yet it reaches further afield to wider Rock-loving audiences. Proof of that was seen and heard when Jessica played Ramblin’ Man’s Outlaw Country stage back in 2017 — her first performance at a Rock festival —where her cover of AC/DC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ had the whole tent rocking, as did her own songs and stagecraft!
