Academy of Country Music Awards

Preview: 56th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards!

On April 18th Nashville will once again host the Academy of Country Music Awards, just seven months after last years event. Take a look at the complete list of nominees! Last year the ACM Awards ceremony was delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic and moved to Nashville from its usual home in Las Vegas. Music City hosted an event which captured the hearts of country music fans around the world as the show was broadcast from three iconic venues around the city; The Bluebird Cafe, the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry House. Despite fans not being in attendance, many took to social media to applaud what organisers had done with the ceremony, as it showcased country music landmarks and the influence they have had on the genre throughout the years – the ACM’s had found a new home and were settling in well. In February it was announced that the ACM Awards would once again follow this format for the 56th Awards show set to take place on April 18th. Though we are yet to hear who might perform, the nominations were announced by one of the leading ladies of the genre, Kelsea Ballerini and Brothers Osborne who are also basking in the success of their most recent album, Skeletons – which is nominated in the Album of the Year category. Leading the way with six nominations is Maren Morris; ‘The Bones’ is nominated for both Song of the year and Single of the Year. It signifies the first time that the reigning Female Artist of the Year – a title she seeks to retain, has been nominated as both an artist and songwriter. Morris is also nominated in the Group of the Year category as part of the super-group The Highwomen. Lining up alongside them in the stacked category is last years winners Old Dominion, The Cadillac Three who have yet to win at the ACM’s, Little Big Town and Lady A – who have triumphed in this category multiple times over the last few years. Also boasting six nominations is Chris Stapleton. This is the third time Stapleton has been nominated for the coveted Entertainer of the Year award. He also looks to add a third Male Artist of the Year trophy to his collection but for both awards he will have tough competition with Luke Combs. If either Stapleton or Combs wins the prize for Entertainer of the Year they will clinch the Triple Crown Award. This award is handed to an artist who wins their respective New Artist of the Year, Artist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year categories throughout their career. Only seven artists have previously won the Triple Crown, most recent winners include Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean. Miranda Lambert is the most nominated female artist in ACM history. This year she will battle it out for her tenth Female Artist of the Year title against Maren Morris, Carly Pearce, Ashley McBryde and Kelsea Ballerini – a tough category, all worthy winners but there can only be one! Meanwhile, at last year’s ceremony, Lambert pulled on everyone’s heartstrings by performing the song ‘Bluebird’ at the Bluebird Cafe, this year the song is up for multiple awards. Bluebird’s producer, Jay Joyce receives three nominations. The categories Single of the Year, Album of the Year and Musical Event of the Year recognise the work of the producer whilst Song of the Year recognises the songwriters. So let’s take a look at those talented folks behind the songs shall we? Of course, songwriter Shane McAnally receives multiple nods as he wrote Ashley McBryde’s One Night Standards and Old Dominions Some People Do and is nominated in the Songwriter of the Year category as well. The late busbee receives two nominations for his work on Carly Pearce’s and Lee Brice’s collaboration, ‘I Hope You’re Happy Now’. There are 14 creatives who have received their first nomination this year, perhaps most surprisingly is P!nk, who is nominated for musical Event of the year alongside collaborator Keith Urban. Their song One Too Many debuted at last years awards ceremony and has gone on to chart all around the world. The biggest celebration this year though is that four black artists have been nominated in a single year which makes ACM history! Is country music changing? Well that’s what we’d all like to see! Mickey Guyton receives her second nomination for New Female Artist of the Year – she is making waves within the genre and really driving the change that we need! Jimmie Allen is nominated in the male equivalent of that category and stands a very good chance. So the stage is set for Nashville to come alive once again and showcase what gave it its nickname of Music City. Whoever takes to the stage is bound to put on a show for the fans at home and all that’s left to decide is who will triumph on the night! And The Nominees Are… ENTERTAINER OF THE YEAR Luke Bryan Eric Church Luke Combs Thomas Rhett Chris Stapleton FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR Kelsea Ballerini Miranda Lambert Ashley McBryde Maren Morris Carly Pearce MALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR Dierks Bentley Eric Church Luke Combs Thomas Rhett Chris Stapleton DUO OF THE YEAR Brooks & Dunn Brothers Osborne Dan + Shay Florida Georgia Line Maddie & Tae GROUP OF THE YEAR Lady A Little Big Town Old Dominion The Cadillac Three The Highwomen NEW FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR Ingrid Andress Tenille Arts Gabby Barrett Mickey Guyton Caylee Hammack NEW MALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR Jimmie Allen Travis Denning HARDY Cody Johnson Parker McCollum To stay up to date on the latest country music news, please register to receive our newsletter here. Jennifer Nettles

Jennifer nettles announces album of American Songbook classics

Multi-GRAMMY® Award winner Jennifer Nettles will expand her musical versatility with a much-anticipated genre defying new album of American Songbook classics, titled Always Like New from Concord Records. The new album will be released on CD, Vinyl and Digital on June 25th.  For this project, Nettles teamed up with GRAMMY® and Tony® Award-winning orchestrator Alex Lacamoire, best known for his work on Broadway’s critically acclaimed shows Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and In the Heights, to reimagine, arrange and produce some of the most beloved songs from the stage, infusing each with her signature sound and giving these timeless works of art a new context and meaning in our current landscape. Nettles shared, “As a child who grew up in musical theatre, this album feels like a homecoming to me. I savored every note of singing and arranging these songs with Alex Lacamoire. It is thrilling to be able to celebrate this amazing songwriting with arrangements and vocals that allow them to be rediscovered anew.” The album, executive produced by Adam Zotovich (Dear Evan Hansen, The Color Purple, An American in Paris), spans classics from “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” (Oklahoma) and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” (My Fair Lady) to contemporary favorites including “You Will Be Found” (Dear Evan Hansen), “Wait for It” (Hamilton) and “It All Fades Away” featuring Brandi Carlile (The Bridges of Madison County). Always Like New’s first single “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat” is available today and features Nettles’ soaring vocals in a jazzy up-tempo version of the Guys and Dolls classic.  “Great songs take life with great singers. On occasion these songs can soar to places unimaginable in the voice of an inspired interpreter,” says Concord’s Paul Kremen. “Jennifer Nettles proves to be this kind of otherworldly vocalist, not once, but repeatedly on her selections from the American Song Book. Woven into each of these recordings are demonstrable emotional stimuli….the resulting sympathetic vibrations of one’s heartstrings might prove the salve our times appear to demand of us.” Always Like New is available for pre-order and digital pre-save here: https://found.ee/jennifernettles_alwayslikenew To stay up to date on the latest country music news, please register to receive our newsletter here. Suzie Ungerleider

Suzie Ungerleider announces new album

Two-time Canadian Juno Award nominee Suzie Ungerleider officially opens a new chapter of her already distinguished and highly successful career with the August 13 release of her new album entitled My Name is Suzie Ungerleider. It’s her first since the artist formerly known as Oh Susanna announced that she would now record and perform under her birth name. Bursting with trademark evocative melodies and trenchant lyrics, it’s the tenth solo studio album by the American-born, Canadian-raised artist revered for such landmark records as Johnstown, Sleepy Little Sailor and A Girl in Teen City. The decision to say “so long” to her long-time moniker Oh Susanna represents her recognition that the “exciting, dark, funny, charming” character that she thought was Oh Susanna was actually Suzie Ungerleider all along. “So here I am, leaving behind the trappings of a persona that gave me the courage to climb up onstage and reveal what is in my heart,” she reflects. “It once protected me, but I need to take it off so I can be all of who I am.” The name change is both a personal and political decision, fuelled by her realisation that ‘Oh Susanna,’ the Stephen Foster song of 1848, contained racist imagery and a belief system that she wanted no part of. She came to understand its historic associations to Minstrelsy, a tradition both demeaning and dehumanising to black people. Leaving Oh Susanna behind, she’s become her true self with a wonderful record that marks a fresh beginning, a collection of new compositions that refresh and redefine who Suzie Ungerleider is. The new album is introduced by the characteristically searing ‘Baby Blues,’ a song about how the traumatic events we witness when we’re young can haunt and indeed shape our older selves. It’s a deep subject with an upbeat punchline. “Like ghosts,” she says, “sometimes you just need to just sit with them, feel their power, and, because they feel seen, they release their hold on you for a little while.” Elsewhere, the album depicts an older and wiser artist and mother sometimes writing for her daughter, both at the time of her dramatically premature birth and miraculous survival on the achingly pretty ‘Summerbaby’ and, now a teenager herself, courageously dealing with her own identity on the intimate ‘Hearts,’ on which mountains of blue watch over her. Now based again in her home town of Vancouver, she made My Name is Suzie Ungerleider with producer Jim Bryson, whose assured touch amplifies the atmospheric dreamscapes contained in Suzie’s reflective, intimate songbook. McGraw’s original HERE ON EARTH album – his 16th studio album – debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country album chart upon its August 2020 release, marking his 4th straight decade with a #1 album on the Billboard Country Album chart. The album was his 19th worldwide #1 and his 17th U.S. #1, tying him for second most #1 albums in the U.S., just behind George Strait. The record offered a collection of songs brought together to create vignettes of shared human emotions such as love, relationships, introspection and fun. HERE ON EARTH Ultimate Edition & Ultimate Video Edition add to the musical tapestry of life presented in the original album, further allowing listeners to connect to each other through the universal language of music. Additionally, a special edition 12” vinyl of “Undivided” will be available on June 12 for Record Store Day. McGraw and Hubbard’s first live performance of the upbeat and heartfelt collaboration came during the 2021 Celebrating America television special following President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January. Most recently, they released a Director’s Cut version of the song’s music video. An acoustic version of McGraw’s hit single “I Called Mama” – originally released in May 2020 – will be on the B-side of the vinyl. The song has continued to serve as a reminder of the importance of home and human connection, especially in the toughest of times. Alan Jackson

Alan Jackson announces new album ‘Where have You Gone’

Country superstar Alan Jackson will release his first album of all new music in six years this spring – Where Have You Gone arrives Friday, May 14. Packed with 21 performances, Where Have You Gone is Jackson’s 16th studio album – his 25th in a storied career that includes two Christmas albums, two gospel albums, three Greatest Hits collections, a bluegrass album, and one boxed set. Jackson – a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame – penned 15 of the album’s songs, including the title track. Keith Stegall, his longtime producer, once again plays that role on Where Have You Gone. “It’s a little harder country than even I’ve done in the past,” Jackson admits. “And it’s funny, I was driving and listening to the final mixes Keith sent me, and I started to tear up. I was surprised to get so overly emotional, but I just love this kind of music.” “This kind of music” on Where Have You Gone runs the gamut of what embodies true country music. “When I write, I visualize back home and growing up,” the Country Music Hall of Fame member says. “Real country songs are life and love and heartache, drinking and Mama and having a good time…but it’s the sounds of the instruments, too. The steel and acoustic guitar, the fiddle – those things have a sound and a tone…and getting that right, the way those things make you feel, that’s country, too.” “Alan’s taken his experiences over the last six years and implemented his poet’s perspective to weave together a masterful love letter to country music,” says UMG Nashville President Cindy Mabe. “This is Alan’s story but it’s also the story of country music. This music love letter was written about the most universal experiences in life, almost exclusively with Alan’s own pen, and it’s once again a reminder of what a one-of-a-kind creator he truly is.” Led by the self-penned title track, Where Have You Gone is highlighted by such songs as the poignant and thoughtful “Things That Matter” and the heartache-filled “Way Down in My Whiskey.” Never one to shy away from reflecting real life in his music, “You’ll Always Be My Baby” and “I Do” were written for his daughters’ weddings…while “Where Her Heart Has Always Been” was written for his mother’s funeral and includes a recording of her reading from The Bible. There’s also plenty of fun to be had on barnburners like “Livin’ On Empty,” “Back” and “Beer:10.” And, in the spirit of the album’s overall sound, “That’s the Way Loves Goes (A Tribute to Merle Haggard)” is a bonus track. Watch the lyric video for “Where Have You Gone” HERE. Pre-orders for Where Have You Gone begin today (April 2) and are available HERE. Lainey Wilson

Lainey Wilson’s Cinematic “Things A Man Oughta Know” Video Out Now!

“One of Country music’s most promising young stars,” (Whiskey Riff), Lainey Wilson today will debut the cinematic music video for her US Country Radio Top 30 single, “Things a Man Oughta Know.” The ‘Bell Bottom Country’ singer will partner with YouTube and iHeartCountry to premiere the dramatic video, partially filmed in Lainey’s own home, which accentuates the importance of discernment, especially when character and intention are at odds. At 6pm BST / 12pm CT Lainey will be premiering the video on YouTube alongside a live chat with fans as it airs. Tune in HERE. Continuing the celebrations, Lainey, who is iHeartCountry’s newest On The Verge artist, will go live on their Instagram at 7pm BST / 1pm CT, with an Instagram Live Group Chat hosted by Emily Curl, welcoming fans, collaborators and actors who starred in the music video. “I hoped that people would connect to this song and it’s been so incredible to see just how strong the reaction has been,” said Lainey Wilson. “For the music video, we wanted to create a piece of art where people could watch it and feel something all over again.” The suspenseful video which depicts a way a man “got it wrong” is Lainey’s first music video as a signed artist and incorporates many personal elements. In addition to filming the video locally – you can’t get much more local than her own kitchen – Lainey brought in longtime friend Sean O’Halloran to help direct the short film alongside co-director Chris Ashlee. O’Halloran’s daughter also appears in the film, as well as Lainey’s friend and Luke Combs band member, Kurt Ozan. “Things A Man Oughta Know” has been a fan favourite and called a “song every Country fan needs to hear” (Taste of Country) and a “must listen” (Rolling Stone). With more than 43 million on-demand streams, it has been featured on key streaming playlists and is currently in the Top 10 on Sirius XM’s The Highway’s Hot 30 Weekend Countdown. She continues to see significant increases in sales, consumption and streaming, landing her in the fourth spot on the Shazam Discovery Chart (US) as well as the Shazam Discovery Top 50 (Global). The “bona fide redneck warrior princess” (Saving Country Music) released her hotly-anticipated album Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’ in February, with a UK physical CD/vinyl release due on April 16th, and the excitement surrounding the buzzed-about newcomer only continues to build. Proving worthy of being named as “one to watch” and “must listen” by many (Spotify, Pandora, MusicRow, Rolling Stone, CMT, The Boot, Sounds Like Nashville, etc.), the album has garnered more than 60 million streams in the US alone as well as a slew of critical praise with several outlets identifying it as an “early favorite for album of the year.” The honesty-driven body of work is a statement of who Lainey Wilson is, what she believes in and the power of authenticity, with People calling it “a worthy reflection of the woman she has turned out to be.” In addition to being a lifelong custom for the Louisiana native, the album title serves as a wink to the candour that was infused in her songwriting process, as Wilson’s playful, clever, sassy, soulful, strong and unbridled nature is on full display throughout the project. Watch the television-worthy live performances that bring the album to life with Part 1 and Part 2. To stay up to date on the latest country music news, please register to receive our newsletter here.
