Drake Milligan

Drake Milligan to release debut EP July 23rd!

Country music newcomer Drake Milligan is set to release his debut EP, Drake Milligan, on Friday, July 23rd. The announcement of his self-titled debut is accompanied by the official announcement of Drake as the newest artist signed to BBR Music Group / Stoney Creek Records. Pre-save/pre-add the self-titled EP HERE. “The greatest pleasure of creating this EP was getting a masterclass in country music from the best songwriters, musicians, producers and engineers that Nashville has to offer,” says Drake. “I hope y’all will have as much fun listening to these songs as I had making them!”  The songs on the EP represent Drake’s sound as old school in a new way. The way he carries himself is well beyond his years. An old soul. Through his manner and music, he re-creates vintage with a modern twist. He co-wrote every song on the EP, tapping into different themes for each to showcase his songwriting talent and vocal chops. While the upbeat tracks showcase Drake’s ability to entertain, it’s the heartfelt ballads where his deep, smooth as silk vocals really shine. Co-writing every song was explicitly important to Drake for the EP to express exactly the kind of artist he wanted to be. In the trouble-drowning, alcohol-soaked “Over Drinkin’ Under Thinkin’,” the Texas native layers the fiddle and steel, while on the upbeat, rebellious track “Sounds Like Somethin’ I’d Do,” he reignites the lost art of fast talking. In the ballad, “Don’t Look Down,” he eloquently paints a picture of falling in love on a dance floor, defying gravity thanks to the honky-tonk’s trusty old jukebox, while “She” is a beautifully simple but emotive depiction of a lovesick boy, listing off everything he loves about a girl. Now 23, Drake moved from Fort Worth, Texas to Nashville, Tennessee at only 19 years old. Armed with an appreciation for the history of Country music, a standout voice and charisma, he listened intently in his co-writes and recording sessions — where prolific songwriters taught him how to tell a story, legendary producers taught him how to use the mics and studio as a vehicle for his voice, seasoned musicians were willing to back the new guy, and his country music heroes shared insightful advice on how to seamlessly shift from the studio and the stage. Wisdom instilled, he’s finally ready to present himself to the world. Co-produced by the award-winning industry icon Tony Brown and songwriter/producer Brandon Hood, Drake Milligan’s debut self-titled EP is due out July 23rd. Gibson Garage

The Ultimate Gibson Experience in Nashville TN

As if you didn’t already have enough great places to visit when you come to Music City; from the Grand Ole Opry to the Country Music Hall of Fame, Music Row, Broadway, the Ryman Auditorium and who could forget the Bluebird Cafe? The Gibson Garage is set for its Grand Opening on Wednesday June 9th with a ribbon cutting and live music performances all day long. The schedule includes Maggie Rose, Celisse, Filmore, Meghan Lindsey & Tyler Cain, Striking Matches and a ‘Gibson Gives’ benefit in the evening. Fortunately, Maverick Country was able to achieve the full tour of the Gibson Garage long before the opening. Located in historic Cummins Station, near the Union Station in Nashville TN, the Gibson Garage is within walking distance of most Downtown hotels. Director of Gibson Brand Experience, Mark Agnesi, provided me a personal tour throughout the expansive garage. When you walk in through the front doors the first thing, you’ll notice are almost 200 guitars rotating over your head and around the room. This is to give you the feeling of how guitars are dried in the actual Gibson Guitar factory on the other side of Nashville. Each brand of the Gibson banner is on display and available for you to play in the Gibson Garage. What I mean is this is not a museum it is an interactive space where the public is encouraged to play, plug in and engage with musical products first hand. Essentially it is like a giant toy store for musicians and artists where you are allowed to touch and play with the merchandise. Agnesi, who is also the host of Gibson TV, took me through the Murphy Lab section where you can have the guitar of your dreams built to your specifications. There is also a Repair and Restoration space, a Kramer guitars corner, KRK workstation, Mesa Boogie amplifiers area and a large Gibson Acoustic Guitars room. At the center of the room is a Live Performance stage where Gibson artists, singers and songwriters will be featured on a regular basis. I spoke with JC Curleigh, Chief Executive Officer of Gibson, in the backstage area of the Gibson Garage. Curleigh said,” When I arrived in Nashville two and a half years ago, I soaked in the Country Music Hall of Fame, Johnny Cash Museum, the Ryman, concerts at the Bridgestone and the Bluebird Café. And I’m like where is the best Gibson guitar experience here? The vision was to have the Ultimate Gibson Experience here in Nashville. A place where you can explore Gibson, a place where you can play guitars, a place where you can shop and go home with a piece of Gibson!” As mentioned by JC not only can you play the music gear at the Gibson Garage you can also purchase instruments and Gibson merchandise in the facility. There will be clothing that is offered at the Garage that can only be purchased in Nashville with the city name printed on it. I caught up with the Brand President of Gibson, Cesar Gueikan to listen to his thoughts on the Gibson experience. “This will be our launch platform to show what is coming and a test platform. We also want to showcase emerging artists.” The screens that you see around the Gibson Garage aren’t designed to play videos, but as Mark Agnesi told me they are interactive touch screens. By engaging in these screens you’ll be able to take a guitar lesson, watch Gibson TV or view the instrument catalog to see what is currently in production and available. Plus launches of new instruments as they release. Jared James Nichols, a Gibson endorsed artist, told me “The biggest thing I get from the Gibson Garage is inspired. I’m like a kid in a Candy Store. This is the kind of place where a musician, guitarist or music lover could just feel it in the air.” Nichols signature model Gibson and Epiphone guitars are also on display at the Garage and his new Epiphone model has proven hard to keep in stock due to public demand. Also, as Jared mentioned, being a guitarist or musician isn’t a requirement to enter the Gibson Garage. Even if you just enjoy guitars as visual artwork you are certain to be impressed with this new Gibson experience. Entry to the Gibson Garage is free to the public. Just check hours of operation before you make the trek to the garage. Also allow yourself plenty of time to wander the rooms and experience everything that is Gibson. I will be making several trips back myself and probably leaving with one more guitar and some Gibson merchandise too. Something like this was truly needed in Nashville TN to represent an international music brand such as Gibson since the guitars are made in Music City! www.gibson.com/Garage To stay up to date on the latest country music news, please register to receive our newsletter here. Dustin Lynch and Chris Lane

Dustin Lynch and Chris Lane Release New Collaboration: “Tequila On A Boat”

Just in time for summer, country stars Dustin Lynch and Chris Lane hit the sandbar – and “blame it on the Julio” – in sun-drunk bobber, “Tequila On A Boat” (BMG / Broken Bow Records), available now at all streaming platforms and digital retailers. “‘Tequila On A Boat’ is a song that points to the absolute perfect day during the summertime,” shares Lynch. “I love being on the water. There’s just something that’s grounding to me, and I’ve made so many memories over the years with great friends, being on a boat, and just doing life together. ‘Tequila On A Boat’ puts me in that headspace no matter where I am, and I hope it does to you too.” Best paired with salt and a lime, the Zach Crowell-produced sunny, buddy-Country anthem was penned by Hillary Lindsey, Justin Ebach, and Matt Alderman. Connie Smith

Connie Smith announces new album ‘Cry Of The Heart’

Today, venerated country singer Connie Smith announces her highly- anticipated 54th album The Cry of the Heart, out August 20th (Fat Possum). On the release, the Country Music Hall of Fame legend is at her absolute finest, affirming Merle Haggard’s declaration about Smith when he said, ““If you’re talking about a country singer, there ain’t nobody better.” The first offering is “Look Out Heart,” written by Marty Stuart and longtime Fabulous Superlative drummer Harry Stinson. Pain and heartbreak have permeated Smith’s timeless country sound and they pulse through The Cry of the Heart, Smith’s first album in a decade and her third collaboration with her husband Stuart (who also produces the effort). Smith asks” How many teardrops have I cried over you” on album opener “A Million and One,” reintroducing listeners to her radiant, textured voice. Smith and Stuart contributed two original tracks written together as well, the soaring “Here Comes My Baby Back Again” and weeper “Spare Me No Truth Tonight.” Other songs on The Cry of the Heart include “I Don’t Believe Me Anymore” the 72nd song Smith has recorded written by Hall of Fame songwriter Dallas Frazier, and Merle Haggard’s “Jesus Takes a Hold,” which is a reflection of Smith’s boundless faith in the midst of troubled times. Grammy Award-winning producer and songwriter Carl Jackson pens “To Pieces” and “I’m Not Over You,” the latter composed with classic country singer Melba Montgomery. Smith has been consistently fanning the country music flames since her first hit single in 1964, “Once A Day” and has carried the torch ever since. In March of 2021 the Library of Congress announced that “Once a Day” was one of the 2020 selections for its National Recording Registry.  “People ask me, ‘What is country music,’” says Smith. “I say, ‘To me, country music is the cry of the heart.’ We all have these experiences in our hearts and I’m trying to identify and communicate with people so they know they’re not alone.” To stay up to date on the latest country music news, please register to receive our newsletter here. Hayley McKay

Hayley McKay releases video for ‘Wild West’

Following on from Hayley McKay’s recent chart topping success with ‘Breathe’, her new song, ‘Wild West’ takes the listener on a trip back in time. Partly inspired by the Doris Day classic western movie, ‘Calamity Jane’, the nostalgic, yet refreshing retro sound features a blend of mandolin, fiddle and guitar, alongside Hayley’s pure vocal. The song is about uncertainty and about taking risk. “The melody and words came together pretty quickly. I then watched Calamity Jane for the first time and some western documentaries, and I started to get ideas for the instrumentation. You don’t hear much of this type of music anymore and I wanted to give it a new lease of life.” ‘Wild West’ was produced in the North East of England by Chris Davison, singer, songwriter and producer at The Forum Music Centre, Darlington. It was mixed and mastered by John P Taylor at Mirage Music and features drummer Paul Smith, who has worked with many well known artists including Alan Hull and Sting. The fiddle is a big feature of the song and was performed by Johnny Bunce from The Spirit Levellers.
