Jackson Dean unveils new single and announces album

Jackson Dean has delighted fans today with the release of his latest single, the studio version of his live show favourite, ‘Heavens To Betsy’. Alongside this release, Dean has announced his much-anticipated sophomore album, ‘On The Back of My Dreams’, which is set to hit the shelves on 6th September. The 13-track album promises to be a thought-provoking body of work, leaving listeners with much to ponder. Already recognised as one of Nashville’s most intriguing artists, Dean’s new project marks a bold new chapter in his career. Embracing his gritty, rambling highwayman spirit, Dean elevates his signature style with turn of phrases, biblical references, soaring guitars, and subliminal messages. The result is a collection of big, wide-open songs that demand bone-shaking vocals. Each track on the album paints a vivid picture, collectively revealing Dean as a man intent on truly living—and living his dream to the fullest. Across the 46-minute set, listeners will find a man relentlessly pursuing every experience life has to offer, facing each sight and feeling head-on. Collaborating with his bandmates, some of Nashville’s finest musicians, and producer Luke Dick, Dean tackles themes of freedom, solace, pain, youth, mortality, and the subconscious. Dean explained the album’s title, saying, “The title can be interpreted from a few different angles, but the face value of that phrase is that in-between state, when you’re in the process of waking up, but reality hasn’t quite set in. Each song on this project has a little bit of that magical surreal feeling. It’s drawn from a lyric in the song ‘Jane,’ this kind of otherworldly, misty tune that immediately embedded into my brain. I’ve lived a lot of life and have watched a lot of life be lived, and each of these songs were written from a single frame of life, almost as vignettes, drawn from daydreams, nightmares, and everything in between.” The single ‘Heavens To Betsy’ stands out as a poignant track, placing Dean in the shoes of a regret-filled man attempting to send a message from beyond to right the wrongs of his past and seek redemption with his daughter. The song has resonated deeply with listeners of all ages, offering a cathartic connection through its characters and soul-stirring plea for atonement. Dean reflected on the song’s journey, saying, ‘Heavens to Betsy’ is like the little song that could. We wrote it and never thought it’d see the light of day, but I started playing it on radio tours to get it out of my head and kill time. I saw a grown man break down and cry to it. That image will hit you like a ton of bricks. So, we started incorporating a bigger version of it into our live shows, and I thought the Live At The Ryman version would be the only place it lived. But once again, this song exceeded my expectations. Night after night, people tell me how it’s helping them through their grief—which is such a beautiful thing. Just the other day, someone told me that their father died 11 years ago, and hearing ‘Betsy’ gave them the closure they’ve been seeking. That’s the reason we do this.” From hearing the expression “heavens to Betsy!” for the first time as a 19-year-old and imagining a man sitting on the outskirts of heaven, trying to communicate with his daughter via a CB radio, to becoming his third radio single due to fierce fan reaction, the unexpected journey of “Heavens To Betsy” encapsulates the surreal aura of ‘On The Back Of My Dreams’. The song’s emotional journey, co-written with Benjy Davis and Driver Williams, begins with a sincere but reserved tone backed by light acoustic guitar. By the chorus, as the man’s comfort grows, the words flow more freely, and the song swells with a piercing electric guitar until its final breath.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Charley Crockett to release second album of 2024 on 22nd July

Less than three months after the release of his acclaimed album ‘$10 Cowboy’, Charley Crockett is set to release his second album of 2024 this coming Monday, 22nd July. Titled ‘$10 Cowboy Chapter II: Visions of Dallas’, this new release serves as a companion piece to ‘$10 Cowboy’, featuring ten new tracks along with two fan favourites, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘How Low Can You Go,’ which have never been included in a full-length album. Additionally, Crockett’s rendition of ‘(Ghost) Riders in the Sky’ will appear on the Twisters soundtrack, out tomorrow via Atlantic Records. “We recorded the songs during the same sessions as $10 Cowboy down at Arlyn Studios in Austin,” Crockett explained. “Could have released a double record. But then Taylor Grace wrote ‘Visions of Dallas’ in a hotel room overlooking that city. She thought about my relationship to Dallas and the great state of Texas in general, and suggested we do a second album where all the songs tie back to Dallas and Texas. The result is ‘Visions of Dallas’.” Crockett continued, “For a truly independent artist like myself, there are no rules anymore. Why release ‘Visions of Dallas’ now? To indulge myself in artistic freedom. The days of 18-to-24-month release cycles have gone the way of the dinosaur. I’ll have my 14th studio album out next week, and every single one has been released how and when I wanted them to. I see no reason to change now.” ‘$10 Cowboy’ has garnered critical acclaim, debuting at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart upon its release in April. Rolling Stone has dubbed Crockett “a must-see live performer.” His recent performance of ‘Solitary Road’ on BBC’s Later…With Jools Holland was met with praise, as were three sold-out shows at London’s Hoxton Hall earlier this year. Crockett will now headline some of the largest venues of his career on ‘The $10 Cowboy Tour’, including Red Rocks, the Greek Theatre in L.A., the Salt Shed in Chicago, the new Brooklyn Paramount, and two nights at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. From the Honky Tonk to Hyde Park: How country crossed the Atlantic

This July, the lush expanses of Hyde Park in London will transform into a veritable honky tonk haven as American Express presents BST Hyde Park welcomes two of country music’s biggest stars: Shania Twain and Morgan Wallen. It’s a first for the festival, whose previous headliners have leaned more towards rock and pop, with previous years giving us legends like Guns N’ Roses, Adele and The Rolling Stones. The two country music powerhouses headlining means only one thing: Country is taking over the UK.    Slow starters  Country music has historically been slow to gain traction in the UK. Unlike in the US, where country is a dominant genre, the British music scene has been more resistant. This resistance can be chalked down to cultural heritage: country music is an inherently American genre, particularly focusing in on the working-class people of the US South. In the US, country music has always been a reflection of its rural, Southern heritage, with themes that resonate with a lifestyle that is less familiar to the average Brit. The UK’s musical landscape has been more dominated by rock, pop and electronic music, with country music often being relegated to a niche status.  However, recent years have seen a significant shift. Darcey Jackson, AEG Festival Bookings Manager, credits events like C2C (Country to Country) for opening up the market by bringing major artists to the UK. “As soon as something becomes tangible and accessible, then it has the power to really make an impression,” she says. This sentiment is echoed by the surge in popularity of country fashion — cowboy boots, double denim and cowboy hats, with the latter seeing a 326% increase in sales in the UK year on year —thanks in no small part to mainstream artists like Beyoncé and Post Malone switching up their sounds to join in the hoedown.   Jackson’s insights highlight a crucial point: the physical presence of country music in the UK has been a game-changer. The C2C festival, which started in 2013, has been instrumental in this transformation. By featuring top-tier country artists from the US, the festival has introduced British audiences to the authentic sounds of country music. The festival’s success is evident in its rapid growth and the increasing number of attendees each year. What started as a modest event has now become a staple in the UK’s (and Europe’s) music festival calendar.    An upwards spiral (or should that be viral?)  The rise of social media, particularly TikTok, has also played a crucial role in the genre’s growth. These platforms allow for the viral spread of music, making it easier for UK audiences to discover and fall in love with country music. Jackson notes, “Platforms like TikTok can have an impact on music, no matter the genre”. TikTok, with its algorithm-driven content delivery, has been a boon for country music. Songs can gain massive popularity almost overnight, reaching audiences that traditional marketing methods might never have touched.     This digital revolution has democratised music discovery. In the past, access to new music was often mediated by radio DJs and music critics. Now, anyone with a smartphone can stumble upon a catchy country tune and share it with their followers, friends and family. This has led to some surprising hits and the emergence of new stars who might have struggled to find an audience in the pre-digital age. For instance, artists like Lil Nas X, whose ‘Old Town Road’ blended country with hip-hop, owe much of their success to platforms like TikTok and even artists who take a more traditional approach, like the UK’s Remember Monday, are feeling the benefits of virality. “It’s very female heavy, a lot of young girls and young gays. It’s really, really nice that we have that because I think before we’d been present on social media, we didn’t see that kind of audience when we’d come out and play. Now since the TikTok world has come out, we walk out and we’re like, wow, all of these young girls singing our songs. It’s really lovely. That is what our music is aimed at. It’s aimed at people who are young and girly,” they say, ahead of taking to the stage for another UK country music event that is on the rise, Highways Festival.      Moreover, the visual aspect of TikTok has helped to amplify the appeal of country music. Users donning cowboy hats and boots, line dancing to country hits and participating in challenges have all contributed to a cultural crossover. This blending of music and fashion has made country music not just a genre, but a lifestyle that resonates with younger audiences. Although country music isn’t all about aesthetic, there’s little more fun than learning a dance with friends and dressing up to play the part – after all, us Brits are fantasists at heart.       Read the full feature in our free digital magazine here: https://bit.ly/3WUe56j Never miss a story… Follow us on: Instagram: @Maverick.mag Twitter: @Maverick_mag Facebook: Maverick Magazine Media Contact Hannah Larvin, Editor, Maverick Magazine Tel: +44 (0) 1622 823 920 Email: editor@maverick-country.com
