These musicians have been inspired by Nelson and share deep admiration for his musical talents and philanthropic efforts. “It’s a reflection of Willie’s impactful legacy that these extraordinary artists will be paying tribute to him,” says Larry Temple, chairman of the LBJ Foundation Board of Trustees. “We couldn’t be happier with how the evening is shaping up.” Net proceeds from the gala will benefit the newly established Willie Nelson Endowment for Uplifting Rural Communities at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, a part of The University of Texas at Austin. The Willie Nelson Endowment will fund research and student fellowships focused on sustainable agriculture, eliminating hunger, resilient energy, sustainable water and natural disaster recovery to benefit rural communities. The endowment has received $100,000 sponsorships from President and Mrs. Johnson’s daughters, Lynda Johnson Robb and Luci Baines Johnson, as well as Texas retailer H-E-B, which is the largest private employer in Texas. “No three have cared more about rural Texas than LBJ, H-E-B and Willie Nelson,” says Luci Baines Johnson. “Please join us in getting ‘On the Road Again’ for rural America and continuing Willie’s legacy of helping farmers and those in need.” Ticket and sponsorship information is available at www.lbjaward.org.

Brandy Clark

Brandy Clark shares her new song, “She Smoked In The House”

11x Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and musician Brandy Clark shares her new song, “She Smoked In The House”. Listen/share HERE.  Of the song, Clark shares, “I was driving around listening to a lot of Merle Haggard. I got stuck on ‘Are the Good Times Really Over for Good’ for weeks. That song really makes me think of my grandparents and that generation. I just couldn’t get away from it. So I started on a song called ‘They Smoked in the House,’ but I just couldn’t connect with it in the way that I needed to. I remembered someone once telling me that to be general, you must be specific and so I pivoted and started working on ‘SHE Smoked in the House.’ The ‘SHE’ is my grandma Ruth. To this day, my grandma Ruth is my favorite character to ever walk the planet. Looking back, I wrote this song because I was missing her and the things that she valued in life. I never thought that it would ever be on a record. It was for me….but now it’s for you, too.” “She Smoked In The House” is the second song unveiled from Clark’s highly-anticipated new self-titled album, which was produced by 9x Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile and will be released May 19 on Warner Records (pre-order/pre-save). Ahead of the release, first single, “Buried,” debuted last month to critical acclaim with Billboard praising, “Clark continues to convey her inexorable talents as both a song-crafter and vocal interpreter,” while Music Row declares, “a stunning ballad of ache and loss by one of our greatest living country songwriters.” Recorded at the famed Shangri-La studio in Malibu, CA, the album features the most raw and intimate recordings of Clark’s decade-long career, as she showcases her versatility across eleven songs that span the emotional spectrum. In addition to Clark and Carlile, the album also includes special guests Derek Trucksand Lucius as well as Matt Chamberlain on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, Dave Palmer on piano, Jedd Hughes on guitar, Kyleen King on viola, Josh Neumann on cello, Sista Strings (aka Monique and Chauntee Ross) on cello and violin, Steve Fishell on pedal steel and Jay Carlile on background vocals and harmonica. Reflecting on the project, Clark shares, “This album is a return home to me in many ways. Musically it’s the rawest I’ve been since 12 Stories and maybe even rawer. When Brandi and I sat down and talked about working together, one thing that really intrigued me was her saying ‘I see it as your return to the northwest.’ (Since the two of us are both from Washington state). That comment inspired so much for me. It took me back to where and how I grew up. ‘Northwest’ and ‘She Smoked In The House’ were both a result of that early conversation. Working with another recording artist on this project was such a gift that I didn’t even know I needed and changed the way I want to write songs and make records moving forward. My hope is that anyone who hears this album will feel the heart that I put into every note of it.” Carlile adds, “Brandy is one of the greatest songwriters I’ve ever known. And I feel like I now know exactly who Brandy Clark is through the portal of this singular brilliantly written album. When I heard the songs for this album, they took me back to the first time I heard Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I was thinking about Tom Petty, The Pretenders, Kim Richey, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne and the soul of 90s Americana before it had a name. Brandy’s voice is like a friend you’ve had your whole life the second you hear it. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. This is her moment. This is the one. Sometimes an artist only gets one shot at an album like this in their life. This is the time Brandy has chosen to reveal herself to the world as an artist and a woman and I was blessed beyond measure to be the person she trusted to support and facilitate that swan dive.” Clark is one of her generation’s most respected songwriters and musicians. In addition to writing songs like “A Beautiful Noise,” the GRAMMY-nominated duet performed by Brandi Carlile and Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow,” Clark has released three acclaimed albums of her own including 2020’s Your Life is A Record. The album landed on best-of-the-year lists at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Variety and more and led NPR Music to call her, “a storyteller of the highest caliber,” The New Yorker to declare, “No one is writing better country songs than Brandy Clark is” and Slate to proclaim, “one of the greatest living short-story-song writers in country (which really means in any genre).”Moreover, adding to her solo work, Clark, together with longtime collaborator Shane McAnally, composed the music for the new Broadway music comedy, Shucked, which is now showing at New York’s Nederlander Theatre.

Craig Gould

Craig Gould New Album Out Now

Musician and mental health campaigner Craig Gould releases his long awaited new album Songs From The Campfire Friday 14th April, in partnership with CALM charity. You often hear people talk about how music “saved their life.” For Craig Gould, that’s literally true. Now, with the release of his debut album Songs From The Campfire (14 April), he’s hoping his own music will help save other lives too. In a unique collaboration, Craig is donating all the proceeds of his debut album Songs From The Campfire to a mental health charity. Because these songs were born from his own mental health crisis. It was 2016 when Craig, who had long ago shelved his early songwriting efforts for a job on the railways, suffered a severe mental breakdown – in the middle of a rush-hour crowd at one of Britain’s busiest stations. “I was on the platform at Birmingham New Street when I just blacked out and collapsed,” he recalls. “When I came round I couldn’t move and couldn’t speak. The paramedics thought I’d had a stroke. My doctor said it was a complete mental breakdown. My body had shut down. When I got home I couldn’t even leave the house.” Celebrated as both songwriter and performer by some of the UK’s most respected acts, Folk / Americana artist Craig Gould announces the release of his long awaited debut album ‘Songs from the Campfire’ – part of his groundbreaking project in partnership with CALM – Campaign Against Living Miserably, on the 14th April 2023.   Full biog attached on Craig’s project and story attached. WATCH: James Dunne’s video for Black Train!

James Dunne is one of the most exciting artists on the UK scene! After the successful release of ‘Duty’ at the end of last year which helped him to further build his ever growing fanbase, Dunne is back with his latest single ‘Black Train’. ‘Black Train‘ talks of a man standing up and taking responsibility which ebbs and flows with the melody, whilst the production allows him to put the spotlight on his rich and gravelly vocal that adds layers to the strong message that is weaved throughout. Speaking about the song, James Dunne says: “When I started writing for the follow up to Duty, it became apparent I had a lot of pain and frustration to get out that I never realised I had, or maybe just didn’t want to address as a man, a father, a partner, a working man and a veteran, all social roles that symbolise a strong person. There were dozens of songs that made it onto paper, which will remain a personal dumping ground for me but it took this period of honest self reflection to accept that no one is invincible”  The song features on his upcoming EP which is set for release later this year and you can watch the accompanying video above. Check out the latest issue of Maverick for an interview with Dunne and stay tuned for the next issue where we will take you through our favourite songs off that EP!

Josh Turner: One-Off UK Headline show

Chart-topping multi-platinum recording artist Josh Turner will return to the UK this summer as part of his “Long Black Train 20th Anniversary Tour”.    Following his triumphant inaugural tour over here in 2019, culminating in a headline slot at The Long Road Festival, this newly revealed date will see the South Carolina-born singer perform a one-off headline show at the Union Chapel in London on Thursday, July 13th 2023.    “I’m excited to share that we’ve added a UK show to the 20th Anniversary ‘Long Black Train’ Tour,” shares Turner. “I can’t wait to see y’all again!”   Tickets go on sale this morning at 10AM BST. For more information, visit JoshTurner.com. On May 19th, Turner’s debut album ‘Long Black Train’ will be released on vinyl for the first time, to coincide with the anniversary of the title track’s original 2003 release date. The album, produced by Mark Wright and Frank Rogers, and single of the same name have been certified Platinum by the RIAA.   “I wrote this song during my senior year at Belmont University, and I remember thinking to myself, no-one is going to want to hear this old-timey gospel number. Thankfully, God placed a few folks in my life who thought differently, and here we are celebrating the 20th Anniversary of ‘Long Black Train’,” continues Turner. “I credit this song with landing me my first publishing deal, my record deal and my first Opry performance.  A lot of folks think this was my first single, but it was actually my second. I was hesitant when the label suggested it be the next single, nothing else on the radio sounded like it, but I don’t know where I’d be today without this song, and so we named the tour for this 20th Anniversary, and we’ll be celebrating all year long.”   Pre-Order ‘Long Black Train’ on vinyl here: https://Snakefarm.lnk.to/JTLongBlackTrainPR
