Jess & the Bandits Together Again – Live Tour May 2022

A planned break after the 2019 UK tour ended up significantly extended for International band Jess and the Bandits. With Jess based in Texas and the Bandits in the UK, the pandemic restrictions were felt even more acutely for this fun loving, crowd pleasing band who thrive on live performance and tour life. Frontwoman Jessica Clemmons formed her Bandits in 2012. With her big voice and warm personality, the Texas native felt an instant connection with the four Brits who made up her band and shared her love for authentic country music. Though over the years members have come and gone as they carve out their own musical journeys, Jess and the band have forged her own brand of UK country, releasing music to critical acclaim, touring extensively and growing a dedicated fan base along the way. Jess’s’ family grew from 3 to 4 in 2021 with the birth of her second son and she is looking forward to introducing both of her baby Bandits to the UK and the world of a touring artist! Jess has been delighted to spend time working on new music over the last couple of years and is excited to announce a brand-new Jess & the Bandits album set for release in 2022. She will be over in the UK in May for an exclusive collection of live shows. Announced as the headline artist for Pitlochry festival (20th May) and supported by Nashville Sounds in the Round in Birmingham(10th May), UK Country Live, promoters of dates in Glasgow (21st May) & Manchester (24th May) and Nashville Meets London (25th May), Jess will be delighting fans UK-wide. With new music set to be released imminently, this exclusive run of shows is the perfect opportunity to catch Jess & The Bandits as they perform brand new material, alongside some old favourites.

Terry Emm

Terry Emm releases velvet Americana single ‘Wish You Were Here’

‘Wish You Were Here’, the new single from Hertfordshire singer-songwriter Terry Emm is both a trip down memory lane and the start of a new era for the artist. His first release since 2018’s ‘Ornate’ EP, the poignant single sees Emm revisit a song from his second album from over ten years ago, with new collaborator Lukas Drinkwater (Emily Barker, Jacob & Drinkwater, Annie Howie) on production duties and adding new instruments. The track is now taken in a stunning new direction with a carefully crafted velveteen 70s vintage sound that tugs on the heart strings with its wide-eyed sentiments of love and loss. “The song is a reworking of a track called ‘Here’ from my 2012 ‘Petals Fallen Off The Sun’ album”, says Emm. “That album was my ‘difficult second album’ in many ways and I always felt like ‘Here’ was one of my best songs that hadn’t quite been realized yet and one day I’d revisit it. The idea stuck with me for some time, niggling away, so I felt like it must be done. So now, in a way to introduce myself back into the world of music, I thought why not touch on the past but also bring things up to date at the same time.” Like all of his previous works, the single draws lyrically on Emm’s unique take on the world and again exhibits his non-routine way of structuring and composing songs. Now wrapped in a classic Americana singer-songwriter coat, with Lukas Drinkwater’s superb Fender Rhodes & double bass flourishes, ‘Wish You Were Here’ has been enriched. “Every recording is subjective and captures a creative moment in time as it is and that’s what can make re-visiting songs years later in a new production setting really fun. When demoing material, I always end up with so many versions of songs and you almost want to release all of them with all their variations.” Emm explains. “Lately, I have also been relating to this particular song’s themes again and it has been cathartic to open up to it again. It felt like the song maybe had more to say or do somehow in the world at this time”, he adds. Emm’s three album releases to date have received praise from the likes of BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris, BBC 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins, Gideon Coe & Tom Robinson, MOJO Magazine, Uncut Magazine, The Guardian and many more, but despite the critical acclaim, somehow Emm’s music has still remained very much under the radar. However, in 2021, Emm’s song ‘Gently’ was featured at a key moment in the narrative of award-winning Toronto based author Jacquelyn Middleton’s Amazon #1 best-selling novel ‘The Certainty Of Chance’, proving the ability of his music to travel around the globe and perhaps hinting at a change in the tide for his career. Wish You Were Here is out NOW!

The Young Folk area, a partnership with not-for-profit Community Interest Company Woodland Tribe, has been a major attraction for festival-going families since day one.  Promoting the best kind of adventure play, allowing children to safely use hammers, screws and rope, the youngsters at Black Deer get to build the playground of their dreams. And last but not least, hear the growl of the counterculture at The Roadhouse, Black Deer’s heavier space. Curators Desertscene and Clash Magazine will present performances from artists as diverse as The Picturebooks and Wildwood Kin on their respective stages, while Black Deer partners Harley-Davidson will also be on-site amongst the custom motorcycles and vintage vehicles, with their revolutionary JumpStart Motorcycle Experience.

Review: ‘Popular Mechanics’ – Sam Outlaw

Sam Outlaw is known for his unique blend of SoCal country. His first three studio albums captured hearts of fans throughout the US and Europe and led him to the stages of some famous festivals and venues. His fourth album he created with vinyl in mind and as such is split into two sides. Side A transports the listeners back in time to the 80’s, synthesizers and fretless bass dominate the instrumentation. The recording opens with the chugging of a muted electric guitar on ‘Here On A Mission’. Outlaw’s vocals have never sounded better and they shine on the laid back, upbeat ‘Half A World Away’ especially in that chorus. Side B leans more towards the Americana influences that inspire Outlaw’s music with its layered guitars. This side opens with the powerful sound of ‘Stay The Night’ which boasts an arena ready sound, the backing vocals helping the chorus to gain momentum. The real stand out is ‘Language of Love’ with it’s simple, stripped back arrangement it gives Outlaw’s lyrics and voice the space to hammer home the beautiful message. Though the album was released last year, it shall be released on CD in March of this year before Outlaw embarks on a UK and European tour.

Hailey Whitters

Review: ‘Raised’ – Hailey Whitters

Hailey Whitters is one of the most talented songwriters in Nashville right now. She has just been nominated for two GRAMMY Awards for two songs she’s written with and for other people – Brandy Clark and Alicia Keys. But her latest album will surely bring in accolades of it’s own as she teams up with fellow hit makers such as Lori McKenna, Tom Douglas and Nicolle Galyon to name a few. She draws influence from her roots on this record and gives a nod to the boys she grew up with in high school on the track ‘Boys Back Home’ which she co-wrote with Jessie Jo Dillon and Brandy Clark, it’s a stand out on the record for me, her lyricism shines through. Whilst the single ‘The Neon’ has a great beat, it is a catchy track with country-pop hooks reeling you in to that chorus. The strings in the production, subtle yet effective. The album is book ended by cinematic instrumentals which set the scene well. Though her songwriting prowess has been established, her voice excels on this album. Whitters told me she hoped to break through on country radio with songs from this album, well if country radio doesn’t play this then they don’t know what’s good for them!
