He seamlessly transitioned from gentle, soulful notes to full-throttle belting, commanding the attention of everyone in the room. His range and control were remarkable, and it was a joy to watch as he effortlessly moved between different vocal dynamics. One of the highlights of Braden’s set was when he acknowledged that his mother was in the audience. The crowd erupted with cheers, and the atmosphere became even more intimate, as Braden took a moment to celebrate with his family. This connection with the audience was palpable throughout the performance, and it was a testament to Braden’s incredible stage presence. His rendition of the classic was tender and heartfelt, showcasing his ability to put his own spin on timeless songs. Braden’s crowd work throughout the evening was exceptional. His charisma shone as he engaged with the audience, making them feel like active participants in the show rather than passive observers. Braden’s ability to connect with his fans was truly impressive, and it felt like he had them completely captivated, wrapped around his finger. His delivery was raw and honest, and the audience could feel the weight of each word he sang. Braden’s performance was an unforgettable introduction to the evening, setting the bar high for the main act. As the lights dimmed and the anticipation grew, it was time for Brothers Osborne to take the stage. The duo, made up of brothers TJ and John Osborne, have long been recognised as legends in the country rock genre, and it was easy to see why as they rocked their way through the final show of their UK tour…   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. The triumphant return of UK Americana Music Week

Americana lands in Hackney once again – and takes over! We take a look at the week of joy, unity and togetherness that has come to make the UK Americana Association a powerful force. For the ninth consecutive year, the UK Americana Music Association transformed Hackney into a buzzing hub for Americana enthusiasts, hosting a weeklong celebration of music, culture, and storytelling. The streets came alive with people dressed in Afghan coats, cowboy boots, and a colourful array of hats—more than you could shake a stick at—adding an eclectic, bohemian charm to the atmosphere. Passersby strolled and skipped between venues, soaking in the vibrant community spirit that has become synonymous with this annual event. The week began with the screening of ‘I’ll Take You There’, a poignant documentary that delves deep into Alabama’s storied music scenes and their significant role in the civil rights movement. The film is a tribute to both legendary musicians and unsung heroes who not only created iconic sounds but also shaped the social and cultural fabric of America. Through intimate storytelling and powerful visuals, ‘I’ll Take You There’ underscored the resilience and creativity that define Americana. It was a stark reminder of the profound influence music has in uniting people, breaking barriers, and driving change. This striking start to the week set the tone for the festivities, with a focus on the enduring themes of hope, resilience, and the power of art to inspire. After this cinematic journey through history, the festival transitioned into its heart and soul: the artist showcases. Tuesday brought an unforgettable performance by Julian Taylor at ‘Canada House’ (a cleverly rebranded MOTH Club for the week). Taylor’s soulful lyricism shone brightly, captivating the audience with his heartfelt delivery. A highlight of his set was the song ‘Seeds’, inspired by the discovery of the remains of 215 Indigenous children at a former residential school in Canada. The track resonated deeply with the audience, becoming a moment of shared reflection and solidarity. Taylor’s performance was not only a call to remember and honour those who have been wronged but also a celebration of growth, resilience, and the strength to keep pushing for justice and recognition. Later that evening, Jack Francis took to the Night Tales stage, delivering a performance steeped in tradition: one man and his acoustic guitar. But Francis’s set was far from ordinary. His humour, ease on stage, and emotive songs immediately connected with the crowd. The track ‘Failure’ was a standout, offering a self-deprecating yet hopeful reflection on the timeless struggles of artists battling their own perceived shortcomings. It struck a chord with the audience, its upbeat melody masking a deeply personal narrative. With his latest album, ‘Early Retirement’, Francis seems poised for greater things, and his showcase proved he’s closer than ever to achieving his dreams. The centrepiece of the week was, of course, the UK Americana Awards, an evening dedicated to honouring the best and brightest in the genre. Among the night’s most unforgettable moments was CMAT’s triumph. The Irish artist scooped the award for well-deserved UK/Ireland Trailblazer Award and delivered a breathtaking acoustic performance of ‘I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby!’. Her commanding vocals and electrifying stage presence lit up the room, leaving no doubt as to why she’s rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about names in UK and Irish country music. With her unique blend of humor, vulnerability, and raw talent, CMAT is a force to be reckoned with. Looking ahead to 2025, fans eagerly await her highly anticipated new releases, which promise to further cement her place in the Americana scene. The awards night carried a unifying theme, celebrating the diversity and inclusivity that Americana music embraces. As the world continues to change and challenge us, the festival was a reminder of the importance of coming together through shared values and love for the music. The atmosphere of the evening felt like a “broad church,” where every performer, whether established or emerging, was celebrated equally. The inclusivity and supportiveness of the Americana community were palpable throughout the night, making it a highlight of the week for many attendees. The grand finale brought a legendary moment to the stage. Candi Staton, an icon whose music has transcended generations, closed the awards ceremony with an unforgettable performance. Joined by nominees and winners, Staton led the room in a rousing rendition of her timeless hit, ‘You Got The Love’. The song’s message of perseverance and hope felt especially poignant in today’s challenging times, reminding everyone in the room of the transformative power of music to heal and inspire. The chorus, sung by a collective of some of Americana’s finest voices, was a fitting end to a week that celebrated unity, resilience, and the boundless creativity of the genre. As the festival wrapped up, the streets of Hackney returned to their usual rhythm, but the spirit of the event lingered in the hearts of all who attended. From the powerful storytelling of ‘I’ll Take You There’ to the stirring performances at the showcases and the unforgettable moments at the awards, the week was a testament to the enduring magic of Americana music. It is not just a genre—it is a movement, a feeling, and a way to bring people together in times of change and challenge. With its vibrant mix of tradition and innovation, the UK Americana festival once again proved why it has become such a beloved fixture on the cultural calendar. Encore: Sarah Louise

Sarah Louise shares the personal journeys behind her chart-topping hits, the influence of Nashville and the Scottish Highlands on her music, and what’s next for her in 2025. What inspired you to create your latest EP, ‘Sunflower Now’? ‘Sunflower Now’ is very special to me because it represents growth, resilience, and a full-circle moment in my career. The original version of ‘Sunflower’ touched so many people, reaching over 20 million views, which was truly overwhelming. That response made me want to revisit the song in a fresh way. The new acoustic version strips it back to its purest form, allowing the words and emotions to shine. I also wanted to celebrate the song’s journey and connect with my listeners more personally, and this EP reflects that. Can you share the story behind your song ‘I Ain’t Got The Time’, which reached No.1 in the UK iTunes Singer-Songwriter Charts in 2024? ‘I Ain’t Got The Time’ is about taking back control of your life and walking away from things that no longer bring happiness. I wrote it when I was learning to set boundaries and focus on what truly mattered. The song’s upbeat, confident energy reflects self-belief and strength. Seeing it reach No.1 was incredible, knowing so many people resonated with its message of knowing your worth. How did your experiences in Nashville and Knoydart, Scotland, influence your fifth original album, ‘Change Of Plan’? ‘Change Of Plan’ was shaped by two very different but equally inspiring places. Nashville, with its strong songwriting tradition, pushed me to grow as an artist. I immersed myself in storytelling-driven songwriting, working with talented musicians who encouraged me to explore lyrics and melodies in new ways. In contrast, Knoydart was peaceful, remote, and surrounded by breathtaking beauty. That reflective space allowed me to process my thoughts, which you can hear in the more emotional, acoustic-driven songs. The mix of these experiences helped create a record that blends country energy with deep personal reflection. Can you tell us about your upcoming single releases? I have an exciting year ahead, starting with my next original release, ‘Doesn’t Matter’, on 21 February 2025. The song is about letting go of expectations and embracing life as it comes. I’ll also be releasing a cover song every last Friday of the month, starting with ‘Dreams’ on 28 February 2025. I love reimagining classic songs and adding my style, and I can’t wait to share these new versions with my listeners. Your music often reflects themes of nature and love. How do these elements shape your songwriting process? Nature and love are two of the most powerful influences in life, and I find endless inspiration in both. Being in nature gives me space to think clearly, often leading to new song ideas. Love, in all its forms, is something everyone can relate to. Whether it’s romantic love, self-love, or a love for life itself, I try to capture those emotions in my music. I want my songs to bring comfort and warmth, just like nature does when you take a moment to truly appreciate it. What was the inspiration behind your covers album, ‘Dreamers Country’, released in April 2024? ‘Dreamers Country’ was a special project because it was created with my audience in mind. I ran a poll to let listeners choose the songs they wanted me to record, and that’s how the album came together. It was wonderful to see which songs people connected with, and I loved bringing them to life in my way. The album is a celebration of my connection with my listeners, and I’m so grateful for their involvement in shaping it. How do you pick what songs to cover and when? Choosing covers is a mix of personal connection and audience feedback. I pick songs that mean something to me or suit my voice and style, but I also love hearing what my fans want. I try to balance well-known classics with hidden gems, making sure each cover brings something fresh and new. The timing depends on what feels right—a song might match a particular season or mood, and that’s when I know it’s the right time to release it. How did it feel to see your song ‘Sunflower’ gain over 20 million views? It was absolutely incredible! I knew ‘Sunflower’ was a special song when I wrote it, but I never imagined it would reach so many people. Seeing how much it meant to listeners all over the world was truly heartwarming. That’s why I decided to celebrate with ‘Sunflower Now’—to say thank you to everyone who embraced the song and made it part of their own story.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Her music, characterised by acoustic guitar melodies, gentle harmonies, and melancholic lyrics, has quickly become a staple for fans of modern country music. Her music tinges each track with a sense of foreboding, reflecting the anxieties of a generation facing an uncertain future. ‘Pareidolia’ explores themes of perception and longing, with Pomeroy’s delicate vocals guiding the listener through an emotional landscape of memory and reality. ‘Cicadas’, on the other hand, captures the fleeting nature of youth and the weight of nostalgia, drawing parallels between the buzzing of cicadas and the relentless passage of time. The standout track ‘Wall of Death’—used in Twisters—showcases Pomeroy’s storytelling prowess and ability to create an immersive soundscape that lingers in the mind long after the final note. Each of these releases has helped Pomeroy expand her artistic horizons while staying true to her signature style. Her ability to craft songs that resonate on a deeply emotional level has set her apart from her peers, making her one of the most exciting voices in modern Americana.   A Voice for a Generation At just 22 years old, Pomeroy embodies the spirit of a generation navigating an increasingly uncertain world. Yet, amidst the darkness, Pomeroy’s songs offer glimmers of hope and love, capturing moments of beauty in the chaos. What sets Pomeroy apart from many of her contemporaries is her ability to articulate these complex emotions with a sense of maturity beyond her years. Her lyricism is both quick-witted and deeply introspective, offering listeners a space to reflect on their own experiences and emotions. Through her music, Pomeroy provides a comforting reminder that they are not alone in their struggles. Getting blasted in the past with ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’

Neal McCoy’s 2005 track still gets us up and on the dance floor, drink in hand and ready to leave the bad times behind! In March 2005, Neal McCoy released a track that would go on to become one of his most recognisable hits – ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’. A playful, honky-tonk style song with an undeniably comedic touch, the track nonetheless carried deeper undertones, reflecting on escapism and finding joy even in the face of adversity. Nearly two decades later, the song remains a beloved anthem in country music circles, offering a snapshot of mid-2000s country culture with a light-hearted yet poignant twist. At its core, ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ follows one of country music’s greatest traditions: A song to drink to. An anthem dedicated letting loose and embracing fun, even when times are tough, the track is so infectious it keeps us singing along 20 years later. The lyrics follow the story of Billy, a man drowning his sorrows at a bar after facing heartbreak. Rather than wallowing in misery, Billy chooses to put on his metaphorical ‘beer goggles’ and see the world through a cheerier, albeit blurry, lens. The line, “Billy wants to laugh, that’s why he’s here, you won’t see him cry, unless he spills his beer,” perfectly encapsulates the theme of the song – using humour and revelry as a means of coping with life’s troubles. It’s a sentiment that resonated with many listeners, particularly those familiar with the honky-tonk lifestyle that often features music as a form of release and celebration. Upon its release, ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ quickly climbed the ranks of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, peaking at number 10. This was a significant achievement for McCoy, demonstrating his continued relevance in the country music scene after years of success throughout the 1990s. The track’s upbeat tempo, catchy chorus, and relatable lyrics made it a favourite among fans, further solidifying McCoy’s reputation as an artist who could blend humour with heartfelt storytelling. The single marked an important milestone in McCoy’s career, as it was the first release under his independent record label, 903 Music. Founded in collaboration with his longtime manager, Karen Kane, the label allowed McCoy greater creative control over his work. This move signified his determination to remain true to his roots and his vision for the kind of music he wanted to create. ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ also served as the lead single from McCoy’s ninth studio album, ‘That’s Life’. The album continued to showcase his signature blend of country charm, honky-tonk energy, and a touch of humour that had endeared him to fans for years. Musically, the song embraces a classic honky-tonk style, with lively instrumentals and an infectious rhythm that makes it impossible not to tap your feet along to the beat. The playful energy of the track is amplified by McCoy’s charismatic delivery, bringing Billy’s story to life with just the right mix of wit and warmth. McCoy, a Texas native with a rich cultural background – an Irish-American father and a Filipino-American mother – has always infused his music with a unique blend of influences. His ability to connect with diverse audiences and bring people together through music is evident in ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’, which resonates with anyone who’s ever sought solace in a night out with friends. A key component of the song’s enduring appeal is its accompanying music video, which leans heavily into the comedic elements of the track. Featuring actor and comedian Rob Schneider as the titular ‘Billy’, the video brings the song’s narrative to life with exaggerated humour and larger-than-life antics. While some aspects of the video may not align with today’s standards of political correctness, it remains a memorable visual accompaniment to the track, offering a light-hearted, exaggerated portrayal of Billy’s night out. Schneider’s performance adds an extra layer of charm, making the video a fan favourite and enhancing the song’s presence on platforms like CMT and YouTube. ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ played a crucial role in revitalising McCoy’s career during a time when the country music landscape was evolving rapidly. The song’s success reaffirmed his ability to stay relevant in an industry that was increasingly embracing pop-country influences. McCoy’s unwavering commitment to traditional honky-tonk sounds, combined with his natural charisma, allowed him to carve out a unique niche. The track also opened new opportunities for McCoy, leading to more touring engagements and television appearances. His larger-than-life personality and stage presence made him a sought-after performer, and ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ became a staple in his live shows. The album ‘That’s Life’ as a whole continues to be appreciated by country music enthusiasts. Featuring a mix of upbeat tracks and heartfelt ballads, it captures the essence of McCoy’s artistry—his ability to make listeners laugh, dance, and even reflect on life’s ups and downs. While ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ stood out as the album’s most commercially successful single, other tracks contributed to its overall charm and appeal. Despite the passage of time, ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ continues to hold a special place in the hearts of country music fans. Its blend of humour and relatability has ensured its longevity, with the song still regularly played at honky-tonk bars and country festivals. More than just a fun party anthem, the song serves as a reminder of the importance of finding joy even in difficult moments. Neal McCoy’s knack for balancing lightheartedness with sincerity shines through, proving why he remains a beloved figure in the country music scene. Beyond its immediate success, ‘Billy’s Got His Beer Goggles On’ has continued to find new life over the years, thanks in part to the enduring charm of its lyrics and McCoy’s infectious performance. The song’s ability to capture a specific moment in time while remaining timeless in its message has contributed to its lasting appeal. Many fans still recall the first time they heard

2000 to 2025: Faith Hill’s ‘The Way You Love Me’

Hill’s 2000 hit remains a turning point in the history of country music: country embracing pop music. More relevant now than ever, we take a look back at how ‘The Way You Love Me’ has influenced country music.   At the turn of the millennium, country music was experiencing a surge in crossover appeal, blending pop sensibilities with traditional storytelling. One artist who rode this wave with grace and chart-topping success was Faith Hill. Among her many hits, ‘The Way You Love Me’ stands out as a track that not only showcased her vocal prowess but also embraced the evolving soundscapes of the late 90s and early 2000s. Released on Valentine’s Day in the year 2000, the song became an instant classic, resonating with fans of both country and pop music alike. Faith Hill’s ‘The Way You Love Me’ was a sonic experiment that played with the then-emerging technology of autotune. This production choice gave the song a fresh, modern feel that wouldn’t sound entirely out of place in today’s hyperpop landscape. While autotune was gaining popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s across various genres, country music had been relatively slow to adopt it. However, Hill’s willingness to incorporate these cutting-edge techniques demonstrated her commitment to pushing the boundaries of the genre. The track’s upbeat tempo, infectious melody, and polished production made it a perfect fit for radio play, appealing to a broad audience. Fans were captivated by the seamless blend of pop-infused production with Hill’s signature country twang, creating a song that felt both contemporary and timeless. This balance between modernity and tradition was a key factor in the song’s widespread success, allowing it to connect with both country purists and pop enthusiasts alike. Hill’s ability to adapt to changing musical trends while maintaining her authentic sound is part of what made her such a powerful figure in the country music industry. ‘The Way You Love Me’ marked an evolution in her musical style, moving towards a more mainstream pop-country fusion that would go on to define much of the early 2000s country music scene. ‘The Way You Love Me’ wasn’t just an artistic triumph; it was a commercial powerhouse. As the second single from Hill’s fourth studio album, ‘Breathe’, the song cemented her status as a crossover sensation. The track enjoyed an impressive four-week reign at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, proving its undeniable appeal to country audiences. However, its success was not limited to the country charts. ‘The Way You Love Me’ also climbed the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number six. This achievement underscored Hill’s ability to transcend genres and appeal to mainstream pop audiences. At a time when country music was striving for broader recognition, Hill’s success with ‘The Way You Love Me’ played a crucial role in bridging the gap between country and pop. In addition to its chart success, ‘The Way You Love Me’ received significant airplay across multiple radio formats, further solidifying its crossover appeal. The song’s relatable lyrics and upbeat energy made it a favourite for both personal listening and public events, from weddings to road trips, and everything in between. It became a staple in Hill’s live performances, often energising crowds with its feel-good message and catchy chorus. Complementing the song’s energetic vibe was an equally captivating music video, directed by the renowned Joseph Kahn. A true maestro in the world of music videos, Kahn brought his signature flair and creativity to the project. Known for his work with artists such as Britney Spears, NSYNC, and Destiny’s Child, Kahn’s visual storytelling expertise helped elevate the song’s appeal. The video for ‘The Way You Love Me’ saw Faith Hill in a variety of roles, portraying different versions of herself in a playful and lighthearted manner. Whether she was a weather presenter, a traffic cop, or a glamorous Hollywood star, Hill’s charm and charisma shone through in every frame. The video not only resonated with fans but also reinforced Hill’s star power and her ability to connect with audiences beyond the music. Kahn’s direction added a layer of humour and personality to the video, making it a standout visual production of its time. The colourful and fast-paced nature of the video perfectly complemented the song’s upbeat tempo, creating a multimedia experience that further entrenched the song in popular culture. More than two decades since its release, ‘The Way You Love Me’ remains a beloved track in Faith Hill’s discography. Its catchy hook and uplifting lyrics continue to make it a favourite at country music events and nostalgic playlists. The song’s experimental use of autotune and pop-oriented production foreshadowed the increasingly blurred lines between genres that we see in today’s music industry. Faith Hill’s willingness to embrace innovation and push the boundaries of country music played a crucial role in shaping the genre’s evolution. ‘The Way You Love Me’ stands as a testament to her artistry and her ability to stay ahead of the curve while staying true to her roots. Moreover, the song’s influence can be seen in the rise of contemporary country artists who are unafraid to experiment with pop production techniques and digital enhancements. Hill’s pioneering approach paved the way for a new generation of artists who continue to push the limits of what country music can be. Looking back, ‘The Way You Love Me’ serves as a reminder of an era when country music was finding its footing in the mainstream pop world. Its success not only bolstered Faith Hill’s career but also demonstrated the growing potential of the genre to reach new audiences without sacrificing its core values. Whether you were dancing to it in the early 2000s or discovering it anew today, ‘The Way You Love Me’ remains a delightful reminder of Faith Hill’s remarkable talent and her influence on modern country-pop music. Its enduring charm and continued popularity serve as proof of its timeless appeal, securing its place as one of the defining tracks of early 2000s country

Country trio Remember Monday to represent UK at Eurovision

The all-female country trio Remember Monday will represent the UK at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Switzerland. The group, made up by Lauren Burne, Holly-Anne Hull and Charlotte Steel, will perform their new single, What The Hell Just Happened, at this year’s contest. This year’s final will be in Basel, Switzerland, on Saturday 17 May after Nemo won last year’s contest with their song The Code. You may have noticed that the country music wave has shown no signs of slowing down, with Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter nabbing album of the year at the Grammys and acts like Shaboozey lighting up the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The female trio – Lauren Burne, Holly Anne-Hull, and Charlotte Steel, who all met at sixth form in Farnborough, Hampshire, describe themselves on the band’s Instagram page as: “Pop girlies with a lil bit of yeehaw.” Formed in 2013, the band were originally called Houston – even releasing a couple of singles under that name. But in 2018, they discovered that several other bands had the same name, so they needed to rebrand. The trio first came to prominence during a stint on the ITV talent show The Voice in 2019, when they were mentored by none other than Jennifer Hudson. Since then they have been touring and releasing singles (including Queen and Alanis Morissette covers) and two EPs. “We always had free periods on a Monday, which is when we just used to get together and sing,” they told Scott Mills a short while ago on Radio 2. “And then that kind of turned into us singing every single day of the week and not going to our classes.” “Our teacher used to come and find us in random spare classrooms and knock on the door and be like, ‘Girls, are you coming into class today?’ And we were like, ‘Sorry, Jenny, we’re being pop stars’, and singing a cover of my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. “So we did that for years and years, and it kind of became a little in joke that it was always happening on a Monday. So that’s where, Remember Monday was born.” Remember Monday already have millions of shares on TikTok, but with their entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, we should all get prepared for more cowboy hats.
