Spotlight: Jessica Lynn

Lynn talks supporting young artists, facing vocal issues and blending musical styles for her upcoming album, ‘All I Own’. ‘All I Own’ is a deeply personal album, shaped by your experiences with vocal challenges and health battles. How did these struggles influence the music and themes of the album? 2024 was a very difficult year for me personally. The majority of writing for this record, I had to do “silently.” After having major sinus surgery in January, I had begun writing tracks for the record during all of February however I couldn’t sing. I would quietly talk the lyrics and melodies into my phone and play my guitar so I never even actually got to sing the songs until we were in the studio. The plan was – once I was “healed” in March, we would have almost 3 full months to do all the recording and finish the record before we left on tour from end of May until Christmas. The real difficulty came when I started to record unfortunately. It was an incredibly scary moment in my life when I realised I wasn’t able to hit certain notes, and I was feeling a lot of pain in my throat when I was trying to sing which would be followed by extreme hoarseness and losing my voice. We are still unsure of the exact cause; it could have been longtime steroid use from pre and post-surgery or just my throat muscles becoming a bit atrophied after surgery, but I was unfortunately diagnosed with Muscle Tension Dysphonia. From March until the tour in late May, it was a race to the finish to find a way to complete this record, through intense vocal and physical therapies and find my voice again. It was one of the most difficult times in my life and something I kept extremely private and quiet. Finishing and releasing this record is a true triumph in my life and it means a lot to me because of how long and difficult the road was to get there. Once in the studio, it was the first time actually being able to try to sing these new songs we were recording so it was a lot of stress. Not only could I not use my voice for long periods of time, but now I had to use those short bursts of time to not just physically be able to sing, but also creatively figure out how the song was going to sound vocally. My struggles greatly impacted the theme of determination within the record and the way the music was presented. There is more passion and heart than ever within those recordings. Can you share a bit more about the song ‘Something ‘Bout You’ and what makes it special to you, both as a writer and a performer?   This song was written about the period of time that I was falling in love with my now husband. That time was so full of magic and adventure, and I really wanted to embody that in the music. There’s also a double meaning within the lyrics as it is also a love song to touring, making music, and being on this adventure with everyone who’s been there and supported me.   You’ve mentioned in the past that you didn’t want to admit your vocal issues were real for fear of losing opportunities. How did you manage that internal battle while continuing to perform and record music?   I had to just believe and keep faith that I would be okay. It was extremely difficult, but I told myself every day that there was light at the end of the tunnel and that I would persevere… and I did.  Your album features a range of musical styles, from boot-stomping country classics to rock-infused tracks and South American rhythms. What inspired you to blend these genres and experiment with your sound? I have always loved so many different genres of music. My biggest inspirations range from Selena, to Richard Marx, to Shania Twain, Neil Diamond, The Beach Boys, The Temptations, and beyond. It was never a conscious choice to include all of the genres – it’s just how my music comes out because of everything I love to listen to… To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Janet Devlin – ‘Back To My Senses’ 25th February

Northern Irish singer-songwriter Janet Devlin is making a vibrant return with her new single, ‘Back To My Senses,’ out on 25th February via OKGood Records. Fresh from back to back success at BBC Radio 2 (recent singles ‘Red Flag’ and ‘Best Life’ landed coveted month-long positions on the BBC Radio 2 B List Playlist) her track ‘Back To My Senses’ serves as both a moment of honest self-reflection and a plea directed at her former lover, following the painful misstep of a breakup. Featured on her critically acclaimed album, ‘Emotional Rodeo,’ this new single highlights her country-rock evolution and ability to transform personal struggles into uplifting, resonant music. ‘Back To My Senses’ reflects the profound impact of Devlin’s mental health on her love life, leading her to mistakenly end a partnership. Opening up on the meaning behind the song, Devlin shared, “On paper this looks like one of the cringiest things I’ve ever done! I had a mental health crisis which led to me breaking up with the person I was with – the manic episode lasted for about three days. When my feelings came flooding back to me and I realised what I’d done – I wrote this song and sent it to them along with a groveling text message. And guess what – it worked!! With ‘Back To My Senses,’ Devlin unveils the first song from her recording journey at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville, where the album’s roots were planted. “The track means a lot to me as it was the first song I ever recorded in Nashville, so in a way it was the catalyst for me taking the leap and recording the whole album there. It was also played a load on the last UK tour so I made sure that I had my guitarist lay down his backing vocals and get my mandolin player on there as well – it would have felt empty without them! Sonically, it’s a bit dad rock – but I wanted it to be. I know it may not be the coolest thing nor have I ever been cool – so I embrace it, as it’s one of my favourite genres!” ‘Emotional Rodeo’ has had a major impact since its release, galvanising Devlin’s place in the country-rock scene. The album reached #1 on iTunes Country Charts, #4 on the UK Official Country Artists Albums Chart, #5 on the UK Official Indie Breakers Chart, and #21 on the UK Official Independent Albums Chart. With singles reaching #31 in the Big Top 40, #15 in the UK iTunes Charts, #4 in the iTunes Country Charts, national radio play on Capital & Heart, Absolute Country, New To 2 with Scott Mills, placements on the BBC Core playlist and over 110 regional radio playlists. Singles ‘Red Flag’ and ‘Best Life’ landed coveted month-long positions on the BBC Radio 2 B List Playlist, the latter peaking at 38 in the UK Radio Monitor Airplay Top 100. The album also saw press coverage in the likes of Daily Express, Daily Mirror, Daily Mail, The Sun, OK!, Record Collector, The Irish Post, The Irish News, Wonderland, CelebMix, ATC, VIP Magazine, and Record of the Day. Other notable recognitions include a special appearance on The Late Late Show Country Music Special (the world’s longest running live chat show), an interview with Ray D’Arcy on RTE1 and Red Flag video shown on Sunday Brunch. Following the album’s whirlwind success, Devlin is set to embark on several live dates this year, showcasing her exceptional country-rock material. After supporting country star Corey Kent in February, she kicks off on March 8th by performing at the iconic C2C (Country to Country) festivals in Berlin, Belfast and London, as well as headlining the Roadhouse Weekender in East Sussex in July and performing at The Long Road Festival in Leicestershire, which takes place from 22nd to 24th August. About Janet Devlin Born and raised in Gortin, County Tyrone, Devlin’s musical journey took off after she secured fifth place on The X Factor in 2011. Earning widespread acclaim, her debut album, ‘Running With Scissors’, reached #1 on the Indie Breakers Chart and entered the Top 50 of the Official UK Charts. Enchanting fans worldwide, her cover of The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m In Love’ has garnered nearly 20 million plays on Spotify alone. Devlin’s second album, ‘Confessional’, was a brave, ambitious project released alongside her autobiography, ‘My Confessional’. The release culminated in a headline UK tour in 2022, and the album hit the Billboard Top 100 in America. In 2023, amidst the whirlwind of touring alongside Russell Crowe and his band across Australia and Europe, Devlin travelled to the prestigious Blackbird Studio in Nashville to begin ‘Emotional Rodeo’. In addition to her musical endeavours, Devlin was the subject of a powerful documentary aired on BBC One entitled “Janet Devlin: Young, Female and Addicted”. During the programme she confronts her addiction to alcohol and meets other young women affected by problematic drinking. It became one of the platform’s top streamed documentaries. Devlin is a passionate ambassador for the equine therapy charity SLTH (Strength and Learning Through Horses). UK AND IRELAND LIVE DATES: 8-9 March – C2C Berlin, UBEREats Music Hall 15 March – C2C Belfast, Limelight 2 16 March – C2C London, 02 Arena 5 July – Main stage, Roadhouse Weekender, East Sussex 22-23 August – The Long Road Festival To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Jason Isbell Unveils Title Track from Upcoming Album ‘Foxes in the Snow’

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jason Isbell has released ‘Foxes in the Snow’, the title track from his forthcoming solo acoustic album, set for release on 7 March. The album marks a return to a more intimate sound, showcasing Isbell’s mastery of storytelling and musicianship in a stripped-back setting. In support of the new record, Isbell embarks on his solo US tour, An Evening With Jason Isbell, kicking off on 15 February in Chicago. The tour includes two nights at New York City’s historic Beacon Theatre, a performance at LA’s renowned Disney Concert Hall, and a four-night residency at The Pinnacle in Nashville, among other dates. ‘Foxes in the Snow’ was recorded at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York City in October 2024. The entire album was laid down in just five days, using a single all-mahogany 1940 Martin 0-17 acoustic guitar. This minimalist approach allows Isbell’s intricate guitar work and evocative vocals to take centre stage, resulting in one of the most raw and powerful records of his career. This marks Isbell’s first new solo material since 2023’s award-winning ‘Weathervanes’, recorded with his band The 400 Unit. His breakthrough album, ‘Southeastern’, released in 2013, featured the modern classic ‘Cover Me Up’ and cemented his status as one of the most gifted songwriters of his generation. Over the past decade, he has won six GRAMMY Awards, making history as the first artist to win Best Americana Album three times. Beyond music, Isbell has recently expanded his artistic repertoire into acting, earning praise for his role alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. He is next set to appear in RZA’s upcoming film, One Spoon of Chocolate. With ‘Foxes in the Snow’, Jason Isbell reaffirms his place at the forefront of Americana music, delivering an album that is both a testament to his craft and a deeply personal artistic statement. Sierra Ferrell sweeps the GRAMMY Awards with four wins

Sierra Ferrell entered the GRAMMY® Awards as the most-nominated roots and Americana artist, and emerged as the genre’s biggest winner. In a clean sweep of all her categories, the first-time nominee took home Best Americana Album, Best Americana Performance (‘American Dreaming’), Best American Roots Song (‘American Dreaming’) and Best American Roots Performance (‘Lighthouse’), all celebrating her multi chart-topping LP, ‘Trail of Flowers’. With four trophies, Ferrell is also the GRAMMYs’ second-most winner of 2025, behind only Kendrick Lamar’s five. Sierra Ferrell arrived at the GRAMMY® Awards wearing a custom dress encrusted with crystals, each holding its own unique properties of healing, loving and protection. The nautical-themed combination of pearls, iridescent fabrics and light-refracting prisms served as both a shield from darkness and a radiant reflection of Ferrell’s bright inner world and whimsical, enchanting spirit. Holding a powerful scepter that encased the scroll to her acceptance speech, the full outfit captured Sierra Ferrell in her true “fae” form. The concept was dreamt up by Ferrell and her creative director, Bobbi Rich, and taken to wardrobe stylist Cathy Hahn. They then enlisted the talents of Jeffrey Kelly Abess, who went above and beyond to bring it all to life. Days prior, Sierra Ferrell also gave a stunning GRAMMY® weekend performance of the Grateful Dead’s ‘It Must Have Been The Roses’. Singing alongside her friend Lukas Nelson, she honored the band during MusiCares’ Persons of The Year gala, which raised funds for wildfire recovery in Greater Los Angeles, and MusiCares’ year-round programs supporting music professionals in need.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here.
