the redhill valleys

Review: The Redhill Valleys – Steady The Wheel

With rock influences, Redhill Valleys combine roots guitar with crashing drums and perfect harmonies on this track. A little is left to be desired lyrically, as the song does fall ever so tentatively into the ‘too much repetition’ category, but overall the band comes together to create a track that stands out among the rest of the Americana and country music that’s on the radio right now. The bands typical 70s nostalgia drips off the track and makes sure that anyone who hankers for a time gone by are satisfied by the power chords and it’s easy to see why the band is so acclaimed as musicians, with each instrument falling into a place that feels comfortably skilled.      To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Conner Smith

Exclusive: Beyond the ‘Smoky Mountains’ with Conner Smith

Conner Smith is in his Nashville home. He’s waiting for his album ‘Smoky Mountains’ to be released into the world. “It’s really exciting,” he tells me, “I think it’s exciting and nerve-wracking and the anticipation and the mix between confidence and doubt is probably the same as any artist going through something so vulnerable as releasing an album.”. There’s a part of me that wants to reassure him that yes, doubt, confidence, and nervous excitement are all part of releasing your debut album, but I wouldn’t know. Despite voicing his anxiety, Smith is as calm and collected as ever, as if he can notice the emotion without giving it away, it’s the sign of a good performer.     Smith is used to it; he’s been performing since 13 and was a baseball prodigy from a young age too, playing in the Little League World Series. It helps that his mother, Jennifer Vickery Smith, was an entertainment editor, so Smith feels at home (although he is physically at home) during our interview, despite having just flown in from New York.  “It’s the last week of ‘This Creek Will Rise’ tour, but we conveniently booked it (the end of the tour) on the same day as the album release.” Smith smiles, knowing that these things are planned years in advance in the world of country music and that there really are no coincidences. He talks about his excitement to perform on the day of the release of ‘Smoky Mountains’ in his hometown, Nashville. “I love Nashville. I still live here, my family lives here and I don’t imagine I’ll ever move. But growing up in Nashville, you’re definitely around the creativity and beauty of this town that is so centered around country music and storytelling. When I was six years old, that was the only dream I ever had was to write country songs, tell stories and try to become the best songwriter I could be. I would go to a bunch of writers rounds all the time. When I was 16, I ended up signing a publishing deal with a guy named Ashley Gorley and Zach Crowell, who are the greatest songwriters. Then, I signed with Big Machine when I was 18.” It sounds like Smith had it all figured out from a young age, first, establish yourself as a songwriter, then (when he was old enough), pursue the recording contract.  The gap in his CV so far is that Smith didn’t go to university (yet). He calls his brand of country ‘college songs’, he uses the phrase as a catch-all for the music that revolves around the ages of 18-21, typically university age. For Smith, the nomenclature is less about going to study and more about the age you strike out alone, discover new things and really find out who you are. I ask whether he thinks that ‘Smoky Mountains’ will be a post-college album or if it’s a continuation of the theme, he answers: “I feel like I’ve been able to take my fans on a journey of my life a little bit. Now, the goal is to grow up for the music, to grow up with it. I think it [‘Smoky Mountains’] is a growing-up record. It’s a journey from that college-age thing to becoming a man a little bit and figuring out who I am and what I want to say. That was one of the goals with this album.” Smith makes it clear that the album is supposed to continue in the story of his life, as an autobiographical writer, Smith reflects on his songwriting as both a collaborative and solo experience.    To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. kerri watts predictable

Kerri Watt announces new music and C2C appearance

Following a sold-out show at the iconic Listening Room in Nashville, Glaswegian  singer-songwriter Kerri Watt returns with new country-imbued single ‘Predictable’. Building on the Americana “vintage, Quentin Tarantino-style” (Sunday Times) landscape of her acclaimed 2021 debut album Neptune’s Daughter, ‘Predictable’ sees Kerri fully embrace country music, ahead of a string of highly-anticipated performances at C2C Festival in March.   Produced by her Nashville-based brother and collaborator Fraser Watt, ‘Predictable’ is the product of Kerri’s immersion into the city’s historic music scenes. Through performances in its iconic, intimate venues to writing sessions with local artists, the rich cultural tapestry of the country music capital takes an undeniable presence on the track, conjuring a deeply warm atmosphere rich in catchy hooks and a distinctively western guitar.   With Kerri’s signature soaring vocals and heartfelt meditations on love, ‘Predictable’ is a song about shunning naive expectations that relationships must be dramatic and chaotic to thrive, and instead exists as an ode to a safe, calm and predictable romance that comes alive at night. “It’s a driving, moody country number inspired by my long term relationship,” Kerri says. “Having craved the wild uncertainty of life and love in my early 20s, I now love the ‘predictability’ of knowing exactly who I’m coming home to each day and just what makes each of us happy. However… At night when the lights go down and it’s just the two of us alone, I love to reconnect with that wild side.”   Over the past couple of years, Kerri’s life as an artist changed dramatically when she became a mother. With touring off the table for a while, Kerri began writing for the big screen and is currently developing an original musical animation with Timeless Films. In 2023, Kerri also became an official ‘Song Suffragette’ in Nashville – a collective that supports and champions female songwriters. (Fellow suffragettes include Kelsea Ballerini & Lainey Wilson.) Kerri went on to host a rare Song Suffragettes show in London at The Camden Club last summer.   Kerri creates songs that captivate and inspire in their wise, vulnerable interpretations of the world around her – partly indebted to her songwriting inspirations Sheryl Crow and Van Morrison. Though hailing from Glasgow, she spent time in the States as a teenager, where exposure to American music heavily informed her sonic palette. There, she was introduced to a world of blues, gospel, country and folk that felt worlds away from her Scottish roots. This scrapbook of musical influences permeates her diaristic approach to songwriting – now furthered with a whole-hearted embrace of country.   Her first single of 2024, ‘Predictable’, kicks off what’s sure to be an inspiring year of new music, live performances and a spattering of exciting film and theatre projects for Kerri. On 8th and 9th March she’ll take to the stage at C2C, Europe’s biggest country music festival, for three highly-anticipated performances. Then, in the summer, she joins the Over The Hill Festival lineup as a headline act on 24th August.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Beyoncé is releasing a country album

The Super Bowl was full of it’s trademark drama – an extra time win for the Chiefs, plenty of celebrity spotting and a half time show that included… rollerblading? But there was one announcement that stood out: Beyoncé will be releasing her ‘act ii’ (a follow up to her disco-themed ‘RENAISSANCE’) on 29th March. What’s more, the album will be centered around country music. So far, there are two tracks that were released simultaneously with Beyoncé’s announcement, the hoedown, boot stomping ‘TEXAS HOLD ‘EM’ and the more story-based ’16 CARRIAGES’. Both of the tracks are accompanied by visualizers that show Beyoncé donning shimmering cowboy hats and her in stockings with a gun holster around her waist. The ‘act ii   3.29’ trailer for the album features snippets of old country, blues and rock and roll songs; Charles Anderson’s ‘Laughing Yodel’, Son House’s ‘Grinnin’ In Your Face’ and Chuck Berry’s ‘Maybellene’ before panning to a shot where a group of men are staring at a scantily-clad Beyoncé smiling on a billboard. The choice of artists in the trailer highlights the black American contribution to country music from its inception and it is expected that the new album will follow the theme of ‘RENAISSANCE’, which has served as a tribute to the cultural significance of the black community in music.     To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Country star Toby Keith has died

Country music star Toby Keith, best known for his hits ‘Red Solo Cup’ and ‘Beer For My Horses’, has died at the age of 62. The singer passed away surrounded by family, who released a statement saying: “He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”   In 2021, Keith became a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in the same year. Keith started his country music career busking on the streets of Nashville before signing with Mercury Records. After his debut single, ‘Should’ve Been A Cowboy’ went to number one in 1993, Keith remained a relevant and au courant country music artist, addressing everything from political issues to drinking after a long days work.   Our thoughts are with the Keith family at this time.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here.
