Gangstagrass tops the Bluegrass charts with ‘The Blackest Thing On The Menu’

The latest album from Gangstagrass, ‘The Blackest Thing on the Menu’, debuted at #1 on the Billboard “Bluegrass Albums” chart this week, marking their second time reaching #1 on the chart as trailblazers blending bluegrass and hip-hop. Acknowledged worldwide as a “hip-hop group,” this achievement showcases how Gangstagrass is bridging genres and transcending boundaries, reinforcing The New York Times’s observation: “This Is the Music America Needs.” “We deal with plenty of skepticism about our bluegrass cred, our authenticity, whether we even count as bluegrass,” producer and vocalist Rench shares. “Having this album top the bluegrass charts is so significant for us as one of the things we can point to and show that we belong here. Not just that we are on the charts, but to get to #1 really puts us in the bluegrass community that has embraced us. Having bluegrass legend Jerry Douglas on our album was an honor, having Dan Tyminski join us on stage at the International Bluegrass Music Association was an honor, and with another #1 charting album, the skeptics have nothing left to stand on as far as whether we are bluegrass. We are, and our amazing fans and collaborators continue to prove it with all their support.” MC and vocalist Dolio the Sleuth expresses his gratitude for the fans, remarking, “This is incredible! So thankful for everyone that contributed to the project, all the folks that bought it, streamed it, told friends and family about it, came to a show, all of y’all. Thanks so much! Besure to come holler at us when we hit your area!” Last but not least, Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell who co-produced “Good at Being Bad” from the album says, “Wow! My first number one bluegrass record!! I never thought I would have a number one in this genre. This is right in line with our vision for Royal Studios when our Pops, Willie Mitchell, passed away in 2010. Royal is obviously world renowned for Al Green and soul music. But our vision was for Royal to be known for having an impact on any genre that was recorded here. This is definitely a full circle and surreal moment not just for Royal Studios but for me as well.” Released Friday, June 14, the delectable 10-track album serves up a bold mix of rhythm, soul, and spice, effortlessly fusing the deep-rooted American traditions of bluegrass and hip-hop, while exploring the core elements of both genres. As No Depression underscored: “While 2024 is the year of ‘Cowboy Carter,’ Gangstagrass has been plying the junction of country and rap since 2007. This takes the pressure of breaking new ground off ‘The Blackest Thing on the Menu’ and allows it to be what it is: a solid collection of summer jams.” The Blackest Thing on the Menu marks the band’s seventh full-length album. With over a decade of shattering barriers and touring globally, this rebellious collective has achieved unparalleled success, crafting an innovative sound deeply rooted in historically significant heritage. The ensemble has skillfully blended the traditional sounds of fiddles and banjos with contemporary hip-hop beats and bars. This distinctive fusion and artistic ingenuity have catapulted Gangstagrass to global acclaim.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. 17th ACM Honors to air on Merit Street with star-studded line-up

The prestigious 17th Academy of Country Music (ACM) Honors will premiere on Merit Street on Tuesday, 24th September, marking the first time the special event will be broadcast on this network. The event, hosted by Carly Pearce and Jordan Davis at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, will pay tribute to some of country music’s finest artists and industry professionals. This year’s honourees include Walt Aldridge, Tony Brown, Luke Bryan, Alan Jackson, Shannon Sanders, Lainey Wilson, and Trisha Yearwood. The show will also celebrate Chris Stapleton, named Artist-Songwriter of the Year, and Jessie Jo Dillon, awarded Songwriter of the Year at the 59th ACM Awards. The ceremony promises an unforgettable night, with performances from some of country music’s biggest names, including Lauren Alaina, Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Terri Clark, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Keith Urban, and more. Special appearances from Post Malone, Kameron Marlowe, and Jackson Dean add an extra layer of excitement. Trisha Yearwood, recipient of the ACM Icon Award, shared her astonishment at the accolade, saying, “It’s strange. I never thought this far ahead… When you look at the names on the list of previous Icon Award winners – Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Garth Brooks – it hasn’t settled in yet. I’m just trying to smile and enjoy myself, but it’s very surreal.” Lainey Wilson, who will be honoured with the ACM Triple Crown Award, reflected on the significance of the recognition, saying, “It’s hard for me to wrap my head around. Just to be recognised by the people you look up to, your peers… I just feel so honoured.” Wilson, who has earned major accolades early in her career, added, “It’s really soon to be taking home some of these titles… I’m 32 years old, and I’ve been in Nashville for 13 years. I’m not a new artist.” Carly Pearce, co-host of the event, highlighted what makes the ACM Honors so special: “This show is so special because we not only get to honour the artists that have made major impacts throughout the year, but we also get to honour the people behind the scenes… They deserve to be honoured in a big way.” The evening will also see performances in tribute to Alan Jackson, the recipient of the ACM Poet’s Award. Reflecting on his influence, Carly Pearce shared, “Alan Jackson was such a staple of my childhood, listening in the car. He was the soundtrack to so many of our lives.” Co-host Jordan Davis echoed these sentiments, saying, “Alan Jackson is Country Music… Getting to perform one of his songs is just a very small way to say, ‘thank you for everything you’ve done for me.’” Terri Clark, who will also take the stage, expressed her pride in Lainey Wilson, noting how far the young artist has come: “I’ve always wondered, ‘Is there a little girl in this audience that’s going to go on and do great things?’ And I’m so proud of Lainey. She has pole-vaulted over everything.” The event will also celebrate Chris Stapleton, with Jamey Johnson offering high praise: “Chris is one amazing writer. I’m so proud to have written a few songs with him – and just glad that I get to live in an era where we all get to hear Chris Stapleton songs.” The 17th ACM Honors is set to be a celebration of both the icons of country music and the future stars of the genre, bringing together a night of powerful performances and heartfelt tributes. Odin S Diona's Help Single

Teen blues sensation Odin S to release new single ‘Diona’s Help’

Odin Sokac, known as Odin S, is set to release his latest single, ‘Diona’s Help’, on 13th September 2024. At just 16 years old, this talented singer and guitarist is making waves in the blues scene, proving that music knows no age. Produced by Fabrizio ‘Fab’ Grossi and Matt Pascale, the track confirms Odin’s deep connection to the blues, a genre rich with emotion that transcends generations. Inspired by Diona, the Greek goddess of rain, ‘Diona’s Help’ carries a powerful and uplifting message: embracing optimism and viewing rain as a positive force. As Odin S puts it, Diona’s rain is “washing away the dirty things and feeding the soil for the grass, trees, and flowers.” The song encourages listeners to find the silver lining in life’s challenges, a message beautifully encapsulated through Odin’s soulful guitar work and poignant lyrics. Born in Zagreb, Croatia, in 2008, Odin began playing guitar at the age of eleven. By thirteen, he had already composed 26 songs, showcasing a remarkable knack for songwriting. His talent has taken him across Europe and the USA, where he’s performed on stages big and small. Notably, he participated in Little Steven’s Blues Camp in Notodden, Norway, in 2023, thanks to a scholarship from the European Blues Union. In early 2024, he represented at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, followed by another scholarship-fuelled stint at the Pinetop Perkins Foundation Workshop in Clarksdale, Mississippi—the legendary birthplace of the blues. ‘Diona’s Help’ follows his previous acclaimed single, ‘Mannerist Blues’, and precedes his upcoming album, ‘In The Circle’. Odin’s collaboration with seasoned producers Fabrizio ‘Fab’ Grossi and guitar virtuoso Matt Pascale promises to further cement his place in the blues community as a young artist to watch.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here. Jordan Fletcher to release second EP of 2024 ‘CLASSIC’ on 27th September

Country music artist Jordan Fletcher is set to release his second EP of 2024, ‘CLASSIC’, on September 27th. This new collection of original material showcases Fletcher’s ambition to bring a fresh and captivating sound to the Country genre. As an accomplished songwriter in Nashville, with credits including work for Jake Owen, Megan Moroney, and Ella Langley, Fletcher is now taking the reins of his own artistry. ‘CLASSIC’ serves as an introduction to an artist forging his own path in the world of Country music. “We started this project five years ago in Austin Nivarel’s attic,” Fletcher shared. “At the time, we had no idea that the songs we were experimenting with would come to define my sound and me as an artist. We were creating the music we wanted to hear but couldn’t find anywhere else, fusing our favourite sonic elements with stories—some ours, some from others—that we were fortunate enough to tell. ‘CLASSIC’ is a reflection of my evolution as a person, a songwriter, and an artist. It captures the sounds I grew up with and paints the story I’ve spent my entire career trying to tell. That being said, I hope it takes you back home, I hope it takes you somewhere new, I hope it makes you think, and most of all, I hope you love it as much as we do.” With ‘CLASSIC’, Fletcher continues to carve out his unique space in the genre, blending traditional influences with modern storytelling. The upcoming release promises to be a landmark in his career, offering fans a deeper insight into the music and stories that define him.   To read more exclusive articles and latest news, see our last issue here.
