Alex Hall Explores “Side Effects Of The Heart”

Walking the line of modern and classic with his outlaw spirit and his heart of gold, Alex Hallbrings a fresh sound to country music that transcends generational barriers. On the heels of his 2021 star-studded collaborative EP, Six Strings, which featured duets with his musical heroes Vince Gill, Brad Paisley and more, Hall arrives today with “Side Effects Of The Heart.” Listen HERE. Raised on a horse farm in North Georgia, Hall’s inspiration was born from country music legends Kris Kristofferson and Vince Gill, among others. Captivated by the art form, Hall began playing guitar at the age of 14. By 16, he had bartered a deal with his guidance counselor allowing him 60 absences in return for maintaining a passing GPA so he could begin pursuing his career. Intent on honing his skills, Hall formed a band and played over 125 dates a year across the southeast while completing his high school curriculum. The influences and work ethic of his childhood drove the project, with a delivery reminiscent of the emotional honesty of Kristofferson, as Hall details the human experience of love, heartbreak, loneliness and what it costs to let the heart feel.         First comes love and then comes the lonely        Then you’re climbing up the walls ‘til the phone rings        You’re in heaven, then you’re dying        Then you’re just so happy that you can’t stop crying        There’s no cure for it and that’s the hardest part        We’re all a mess living with the side effects of the heart “This track sets the tone so well for the new music I’ve been creating that will be rolling out this year, and I can’t wait to share it all,” Hall shared exclusively with Holler this morning. “Until then, remember that ‘we’re all a mess living with the side effects of the heart.’” As he prepares to release more new music in 2023, each song delving further into the side effects described in the chorus verse, Hall is currently embarking alongside Caitlyn Smith on The Great Pretender Tour. In partnership with DTour – a network of independent venues and promoters offering national artists locally owned, unique venue experiences across multiple markets – The Great Pretender Tour kicked off April 3 in Austin, Texas, and includes 15 independent venues across the country celebrating the stories behind the songs. For more information, visit MusicByAlexHall.com or follow @MusicByAlexHall on all social media platforms.

Robbie Fulks Bluegrass Vacation Out Now!

founding father of the alt-country scene and roots music icon, Robbie Fulks releases his new 12-track album, Bluegrass Vacation, via Compass Records. Arriving on a wave of praise from the likes of Bluegrass Today, Holler and No Depression, Fulks’s clever, insightful and irreverent musicianship is ever present on this record. While bluegrass music has always been a part of Fulks’s musical vision, Bluegrass Vacation marks his first full-length bluegrass endeavor. The album combines Fulk’s brilliance with some of bluegrass’ greatest names including Sam Bush, Sierra Hull, Ronnie McCoury, Tim O’Brien, Alison Brown, John Cowan, and Jerry Douglas resulting in one of the most remarkable bluegrass albums of the century. Bluegrass Vacation proves that this is much more than a musical detour for Fulks. Fulks gained immediate recognition from Bluegrass Today and No Depression for the upbeat lead single “One Glass Of Whiskey.” Driven by Wes Corbett’s banjo, powered by Ronnie McCoury’s mandolin, along with Chris Eldridge’s guitar—the track is worthy of becoming a standard in the bluegrass genre. Written shortly after his move to Los Angeles in 2019, the song is a “contradiction of the stereotypical view of LA,” says Fulks, ditching the common pre-conceived notion of palm trees, beaches, and traffic for Fulks’s more serene reality of porch side mornings, mountain vistas, and running horses. Robbie Fulks offers a witty and autobiographical take on the bluegrass festival scene of the mid 1970s with the second single from the record, “Longhair Bluegrass,” its release being spotlighted by Grateful Web. Reminiscing about the newgrass festivals of his youth, Fulks writes: “While Mom and Daddy were gettin’ fried, I was sittin’ there with my eyeballs wide,” describing the music as a “Hypno-ray, stealin’ my mind away.” Original Newgrass Revival members Sam Bush (mandolin/harmony vocals) and John Cowan (vocals) join Fulks on the track as well as banjoist Alison Brown who channels John Hartford for good measure. In the end, Fulks plants his flag firmly in the bluegrass tradition, a genre that built the stepping stones Fulks walks on today. He muses, “Electric guitars might give way to computers, as seems to be happening now, but the mountains will still be right there.” It’s abundantly clear that Bluegrass Vacation is more than just a musical dalliance for Fulks. He owns the music as much as it owns him and the listener is left hoping that this bluegrass vacation will end up becoming a staycation. TRACKLIST:1. One Glass Of Whiskey2. Molly And The Old Man 3. Mikhail laxton releases new single

An effortless blend of raw, soulful influence and gritty folk sensibilities serve as the backbone for ‘Dying To Let You Go’, the new single from rising singer-songwriter Mikhail Laxton, out March 31st via Acronym Records / Howling Turtle Inc. ‘Dying To Let You Go’ is a deeply vulnerable offering from Laxton; his own father’s heart-breaking battle with addiction central to the song’s theme and perspective; delivering tender and compassionate insight into the push and pull of the disease. The first release from his forthcoming debut full-length album, ‘Dying To Let You Go’ acts as a cathartic outlet for Laxton’s past and present, all anchored by his dynamic voice; mournful, yet mighty. Laying bare the irony of how he first coped with his father’s death, Laxton reflects, “After his passing I spent the next four weeks completely wasted. Ironically all I kept thinking was why he didn’t sort it out before it got too bad. I kept imagining him when he was younger, having a conversation with himself wishing that he would have realized what he was doing and stopped.” He adds “When I was finally able to write this song, it poured out of me and at first, I had no idea what it was even about. As I finished it, it was clear. ‘Dying To Let You Go’ is that conversation. This song is written from his perspective, it’s the fairy-tale of my dad slaying his addiction. It’s him realizing that if he couldn’t let it go in time, it would take him.” Hailing from the the KuKu Yalanji Tribe in Mossman, Far North Queensland, Australia, Laxton learned the meaning of hard work growing up on one of the few Indigenous-owned and operated farms in the region. That work ethic transferred to his passion and drive to pursue music as a career, moving to Canada to start from scratch though he already had deep roots in the Australian music scene. In 2021 he released his debut EP Real to critical acclaim, drawing primary inspiration from the power of love as an extension of who he is; honest, humble and soulful. Now, ‘Dying To Let You Go’ offers a first glimpse of his forthcoming self-titled debut full- length album Mikhail Laxton, a collection that carries the weight of the last seven years of trying to rebuild his career and life. The topics in the album range from loss, and longing, to missing home, the feeling of being broken and moments of love. Next up, Laxton will hit the road with contemporary folk singer-songwriter Marshall Veroni before taking the stage later this summer at Springtide Music Festival in Uxbridge and Ottawa’s RBC Bluesfest.

Brandy Clark

Brandy Clark returns with self-titled album produced by Brandi Carlile

11-time Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and musician Brandy Clark will return this spring with her highly-anticipated new self-titled album—out May 19 on Warner Records (Click HERE to pre-order/pre-save). Produced by 9-time Grammy winning Brandi Carlile, the album showcases Clark’s versatility with eleven songs that span the emotional spectrum, including the first single, “Buried,” which is out today. Click HERE to view visual. Of the project, Clark shares, “This album is a return home to me in many ways. Musically it’s the rawest I’ve been since 12 Stories and maybe even rawer. When Brandi and I sat down and talked about working together, one thing that really intrigued me was her saying ‘I see it as your return to the northwest.’ (Since the two of us are both from Washington state). That comment inspired so much for me. It took me back to where and how I grew up. ‘Northwest’ and ‘She Smoked In The House’ were both a result of that early conversation. Working with another recording artist on this project was such a gift that I didn’t even know I needed and changed the way I want to write songs and make records moving forward. My hope is that anyone who hears this album will feel the heart that I put into every note of it.” Carlile adds, “Brandy is one of the greatest songwriters I’ve ever known. And I feel like I now know exactly who Brandy Clark is through the portal of this singular brilliantly written album. When I heard the songs for this album, they took me back to the first time I heard Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I was thinking about Tom Petty, The Pretenders, Kim Richey, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne and the soul of 90s Americana before it had a name. Brandy’s voice is like a friend you’ve had your whole life the second you hear it. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. This is her moment. This is the one. Sometimes an artist only gets one shot at an album like this in their life. This is the time Brandy has chosen to reveal herself to the world as an artist and a woman and I was blessed beyond measure to be the person she trusted to support and facilitate that swan dive.” Recorded at the famed Shangri-La studio in Malibu, CA, the album, Clark’s fourth, features the most raw and intimate recordings of the CMA winner’s decade-long career as both a hit songwriter for other artists and a performer in her own right. In addition to Clark and Carlile, the album includes special guests Derek Trucks and Lucius as well as Matt Chamberlain on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, Dave Palmer on piano, Jedd Hughes on guitar, Kyleen King on viola, Josh Neumann on cello, Sista Strings (aka Monique and Chauntee Ross) on cello and violin, Steve Fishell on pedal steel and Jay Carlile on background vocals and harmonica. Clark is one of her generation’s most respected songwriters and musicians. In addition to writing songs like “A Beautiful Noise,” the GRAMMY-nominated duet performed by Brandi Carlile and Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow,” Clark has released three acclaimed albums of her own including 2020’s Your Life is A Record. The album landed on best-of-the-year lists at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Variety and more and led NPR Music to call her, “a storyteller of the highest caliber,” The New Yorker to declare, “No one is writing better country songs than Brandy Clark is” and Slate to proclaim, “one of the greatest living short-story-song writers in country (which really means in any genre).” Moreover, adding to her solo work, Clark, together with longtime collaborator Shane McAnally, composed the music for the upcoming Broadway music comedy, Shucked, which is set to open April 4 at New York’s Nederlander Theatre.
