Black Deer confirms this year’s line-up

Black Deer reveals the final wave of artists for the fourth edition of the festival, taking place at Eridge Park, Kent on June 16-18 2023 – including Americana legends, winners of the Black Deer Emerging 2023 programme, and even a Hollywood actor turned musician. Tickets are selling fast at https://blackdeerfestival.com/tickets/. Black Deer Festival is on a mission to bring the real Americana & Country music, and way of life, to the UK – a feat it has certainly achieved this year with an eclectic line-up that showcases all aspects and sub-genres of this incredible community. Now, Europe’s premier, award-winning Americana festival is excited to share the additional artists joining Bonnie Raitt, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, The Pretenders, Bear’s Den, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle (Alone Again Solo & Acoustic), Far From Saints and many more at Eridge Park. Richard Hawley is a songwriter whose elegant, timeless work ranges from neo-psychedelic indie rock to vintage roots rock, lushly orchestrated ballads, and highly styled romantic pop. With eight solo albums under his belt and countless collaborations with Pulp, Arctic Monkeys and more recently Acid Klaus, Hawley also took the musical world by storm with his show Standing At The Sky’s Edge, further cementing his status as a national treasure. Last week, Damian Lewis (Band Of Brothers, Billions, Homeland) announced himself to the world as a musician, releasing his debut single ‘Down on the Bowery’ (and even letting slip about his forthcoming Black Deer performance). The esteemed actor’s debut album Mission Creep, described as a “thoughtful collection of rootsy, rock and jazz-tinged songs”, will be released on the exact same day he takes to the stage in Eridge Park, in what will be an unmissable and a memorable spectacle. Patty Griffin is among the most consequential voices of her generation, a quintessentially American artist whose wide-ranging canon incisively explores the intimate moments and universal emotions that bind us together. The Grammy Award winner returns to the UK for the first time in four years and for the first time since her 2022 album TAPE was released, a collection of rare demos and home recordings from across her career. Another legend joining the bill is Brandy Clark. Described as a “storyteller of the highest order” by NPR, the 11x Grammy nominated musician recently shared the first single “Buried” from her highly anticipated self-titled album that drops in May 2023 – just in time for her performance at Black Deer. Black Deer is also thrilled to welcome Demi Marriner, Motel Sundown, Anna Howie, and Samuel Ashton, winners of the Black Deer Emerging 2023 programme – beating out 700+ artists who applied after being voted the deserved winners from the Black Deer community. Co-Founder Deb Shilling says, “Each of these winning artists will bring something all of their own to our Americana playground and we can’t wait to welcome them to the deer park.” Away from the main stages, Black Deer will also bring the authentic Americana way of life to the UK through incredible food, music and storytelling, with the Arkansas Porch Sessions and The Roadhouse returning. Plus news on the festival’s much-loved artisan street-food & drink offering (including the hugely popular ‘Live Fire’ chefs, brought to you by Grillstock founders and popular authors Jon Finch and Ben Merrington), The Great Americana Songbook, The Songwriter Sessions, Gospel Brunch and Ozark Holler Hootenanny coming soon. The Young Folk area will also return with a whole host of fun activities for all the family. Founders of the Black Deer Festival, Gill Tee and Debs Shilling, add, “Black Deer is about experiencing the unique cultural richness that surrounds the Americana lifestyle. The natural ingredients that complete this melting pot can all be found at Black Deer – from authentic smokehouse BBQ cooking and a righteous Sunday gospel brunch to the thrill of custom motorcycle culture and a connection with nature to inspire the young folk. As well as the above-mentioned, the following artists will also be joining the weekend’s incredible lineup: Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra, NoGood Boyo, Maz O’Connor, Liam Cromby, Emily Nenni, Brennen Leigh, Stephen Wilson Jr, The Vanguards and the Powerhouse Gospel Choir. Tier 3 day & weekend tickets are available now here. Fancy camping, pre-pitched camping upgrades and other upgrades are also available here.

Brandy Clark shares her new song, “She Smoked In The House”

11x Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and musician Brandy Clark shares her new song, “She Smoked In The House”. Listen/share HERE.  Of the song, Clark shares, “I was driving around listening to a lot of Merle Haggard. I got stuck on ‘Are the Good Times Really Over for Good’ for weeks. That song really makes me think of my grandparents and that generation. I just couldn’t get away from it. So I started on a song called ‘They Smoked in the House,’ but I just couldn’t connect with it in the way that I needed to. I remembered someone once telling me that to be general, you must be specific and so I pivoted and started working on ‘SHE Smoked in the House.’ The ‘SHE’ is my grandma Ruth. To this day, my grandma Ruth is my favorite character to ever walk the planet. Looking back, I wrote this song because I was missing her and the things that she valued in life. I never thought that it would ever be on a record. It was for me….but now it’s for you, too.” “She Smoked In The House” is the second song unveiled from Clark’s highly-anticipated new self-titled album, which was produced by 9x Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile and will be released May 19 on Warner Records (pre-order/pre-save). Ahead of the release, first single, “Buried,” debuted last month to critical acclaim with Billboard praising, “Clark continues to convey her inexorable talents as both a song-crafter and vocal interpreter,” while Music Row declares, “a stunning ballad of ache and loss by one of our greatest living country songwriters.” Recorded at the famed Shangri-La studio in Malibu, CA, the album features the most raw and intimate recordings of Clark’s decade-long career, as she showcases her versatility across eleven songs that span the emotional spectrum. In addition to Clark and Carlile, the album also includes special guests Derek Trucksand Lucius as well as Matt Chamberlain on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, Dave Palmer on piano, Jedd Hughes on guitar, Kyleen King on viola, Josh Neumann on cello, Sista Strings (aka Monique and Chauntee Ross) on cello and violin, Steve Fishell on pedal steel and Jay Carlile on background vocals and harmonica. Reflecting on the project, Clark shares, “This album is a return home to me in many ways. Musically it’s the rawest I’ve been since 12 Stories and maybe even rawer. When Brandi and I sat down and talked about working together, one thing that really intrigued me was her saying ‘I see it as your return to the northwest.’ (Since the two of us are both from Washington state). That comment inspired so much for me. It took me back to where and how I grew up. ‘Northwest’ and ‘She Smoked In The House’ were both a result of that early conversation. Working with another recording artist on this project was such a gift that I didn’t even know I needed and changed the way I want to write songs and make records moving forward. My hope is that anyone who hears this album will feel the heart that I put into every note of it.” Carlile adds, “Brandy is one of the greatest songwriters I’ve ever known. And I feel like I now know exactly who Brandy Clark is through the portal of this singular brilliantly written album. When I heard the songs for this album, they took me back to the first time I heard Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I was thinking about Tom Petty, The Pretenders, Kim Richey, Sheryl Crow, Shelby Lynne and the soul of 90s Americana before it had a name. Brandy’s voice is like a friend you’ve had your whole life the second you hear it. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. This is her moment. This is the one. Sometimes an artist only gets one shot at an album like this in their life. This is the time Brandy has chosen to reveal herself to the world as an artist and a woman and I was blessed beyond measure to be the person she trusted to support and facilitate that swan dive.” Clark is one of her generation’s most respected songwriters and musicians. In addition to writing songs like “A Beautiful Noise,” the GRAMMY-nominated duet performed by Brandi Carlile and Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow,” Clark has released three acclaimed albums of her own including 2020’s Your Life is A Record. The album landed on best-of-the-year lists at Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Variety and more and led NPR Music to call her, “a storyteller of the highest caliber,” The New Yorker to declare, “No one is writing better country songs than Brandy Clark is” and Slate to proclaim, “one of the greatest living short-story-song writers in country (which really means in any genre).”Moreover, adding to her solo work, Clark, together with longtime collaborator Shane McAnally, composed the music for the new Broadway music comedy, Shucked, which is now showing at New York’s Nederlander Theatre.
