Abbey Cone releases new single ‘Hate Me’

Rising artist ABBEY CONE thinks a lot about love, expressing, “I’m an emotional ass girl. I love it when a song brings out pure emotion.” Her new song “Hate Me,” out now via The Valory Music Co., vividly describes the mixed emotions of a breakup and the conflicted feelings around the end of a relationship. “’Hate Me’ is about the feelings you wrestle with post-breakup and wanting to be remembered,” says Cone. “If the opposite of love is not hate it’s indifference – this song is about the root of that feeling of wanting to be remembered.” Cone wrote the song with Jessie Jo Dillon and Nathan Spicer. Following her debut release “Rhinestone Ring,” the new song arrives as she joins Brittney Spencer for her IN A PERFECT WORLD TOUR  in the US with select dates starting this week.

AMA

Barry Gibb wins Best-Selling Americana Album Award at the UK Americana Awards

During the UK Americana Awards 2022, broadcast via Youtube this evening, The Americana Music Association UK, in conjunction with The Official Charts Company, was delighted to announce that Barry Gibb has won this year’s Award for the best-selling Americana Album by a UK Artist, for his magnificent album Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers’ Songbook Vol.1. Meanwhile, Allison Russell and Yola were both double-winners in the seven member-voted Awards. Allison scooped International Artist of the Year and International Album of the Year for ‘Outside Child’, whilst Yola won in the UK equivalent categories, UK Artist of the Year and UK Album of the Year for ‘Stand For Myself’. Lady Nade won the award for UK Song of the Year with “Willing”, Brandi Carlile for International Song of the Year with “Right On Time”, and Michele Stodart for UK Instrumentalist of the Year. The all-female winners’ line-up, including three women of colour, is especially gratifying for The Americana Music Association UK, reflecting its commitment to diversity since signing up to the Keychange pledge in 2018 and its focus on inclusion since the Black Lives Matter Movement re-ignited the need to prioritise these goals. As previously announced, Lucinda Williams took home the International Lifetime Achievement Award, Beth Orton the Trailblazer Award, The Long Ryders the International Trailblazer Award, Lauren Housley the Bob Harris Emerging Artist Award and Tom Bridgewater of Loose Music the Grass Roots Award. The UK Americana Awards Show 2022 was hosted by broadcasters Baylen Leonard and Bob Harris and featured an array of superb performances from Kiefer Sutherland, Allison Russell, Lauren Housley, Lady Nade, Elles Bailey, Sierra Ferrell, Amythyst Kiah, Memorial, The Wandering Hearts, Aaron Lee Tasjan and Sid Griffin of The Long Ryders with the house band led by Michele Stodart (The Magic Numbers). The Shires

The Shires announce new album ’10 Year Plan’

The Shires announce the release of their soul-stirring new album ‘10 Year Plan’ out on 11th March 2022 and launch it by sharing its lead single ‘I See Stars’. Premiered on Zoe Ball’s Breakfast Show on Radio 2 this morning, ‘I See Stars’ is symbolic of The Shires’ pop-orientated, crowd-pleasing, full-passion, global-facing take on the country tradition. The duo’s Ben Earle wrote the song with Jeff Cohen (Jake Bugg, Mandy Moore, Sugarland), who previously collaborated on their fan favourites ‘Daddy’s Little Girl’ and ‘A Thousand Hallelujahs’. Ben says, “We love the Coldplay/‘Greatest Showman’ vibes on this! it’s not trying to be clever, it’s just really uplifting and big and positive. It’s another one that has arena vibes – I can picture us being up there on a massive stage with everyone singing along.” ‘I See Stars’ is a bold introduction to ‘10 Year Plan’, a collection of songs which takes all of The Shires’ biggest influences and condenses them into one cohesive, confident record. Its title harks back to their modest goals when they first started back in 2012. As Crissie Rhodes reflects, “We wanted to get our music to Bob Harris, and we wanted a thousand Facebook followers. At the time that seemed crazy, but Ben was committed to it.” He was proven right, as Chrissie continues: “The number of people enjoying country music has exploded in the UK, but it still feels like an undercurrent. Even recently, we’ve had people come to our shows and say they were surprised, because they didn’t think country was for them!” From the early Taylor Swift / Lady A country-pop euphoria of the opener ‘Cut Me Loose’ to the classic pedal steel guitar of the timeless closer ‘When It Hurts’, ‘10 Year Plan’ demonstrates that country delivered with ambition and accomplishment can cut through such stereotypes. In fact, that’s something the duo display on every corner, whether they’re layering their lush harmonies on ‘Sparks Fly’ and ‘Bar Without You’, collaborating with Beth McCarthy on the Civil Wars-tinged ‘Plot Twist’, or delivering rousing anthems such as ‘Skydive’. ‘10 Year Plan’ is now available to pre-order now. Currently completing an intimate acoustic tour, The Shires will commence a major UK headline tour in April that culminates with a landmark London show at The Palladium on May 24th. Please see their website for a full list of dates and ticket details. ‘10 Year Plan’ tracklist: 1. ‘Cut Me Loose’ 2. ‘Sparks Fly’ 3. ‘Side By Side’ 4. ‘Plot Twist’ 5. ‘Ten Year Plan’ 6. ‘I See Stars’ 7. ‘Bar Without You’ 8. ‘Baby We’re Rich’ 9. ‘Skydive’ 10. ‘Wild Heart’ 11. ‘Forever Tonight’ 12. ‘Peggy I’m Sorry’ 13. ‘When It Hurts

Midland

Midland shares new “Sunrise Tells The Story” video

Midland’s rewritten what post-Urban Cowboy country can be since arriving with 2017’s Platinum-certified, double Grammy® nominated “Drinkin’ Problem.” The progressive trio of Mark Wystrach, Cameron Duddy and Jess Carson have sought to merge cultural influences, far-flung pieces of 20th century Country music and a cool that defies most Nashville touchpoints. Whether Bakersfield or Billy Bob’s, the Palomino or Grand Ole Opry, there’s a liveliness that draws lovers of classic country, hipsters, fashionistas and critics to their hybrid sense of what the genre can contain. For The Last Resort EP, the threesome sought to broaden their reach – musically, visually and now via the new video for “Sunrise Tells The Story.” “We’ve always loved pop culture,” says bassist/harmony singer Cameron Duddy, “and the way it threads through how people live. Done properly, it becomes what people reference in their lives… and when we were trying to think of how to represent this song, we wanted something more than just the obvious reference to a guy and a girl getting together.” “And,” adds guitarist/vocalist Jess Carson, “we wanted to show people our own dynamic, too. How do you show our friendship in a way that’s not just a bunch of guys on the road?” “Sunrise Tells The Story” riffs on the Officer & A Gentleman notion of the class structures, formalities, and realities of military life. But rather than the heroine being a local girl, the young woman is the chief officer’s daughter – and the location is his retirement party. Equal parts buddy movie, burgeoning romance and a bit of the morning after, “Sunrise” is a classic spin on themes, euphoria and the way a great country song lifts everything around it. Directed by Duddy, who’s directed Bruno Mars/Mark Ronson’s MTV Video of the Year “Uptown Funk” and Mars’ BET Video of the Year “24K Magic,” the clip captures the trio’s wry humor – including a bit on the pronunciation of Wystrach’s name — as well as the confession the singer has developed real feelings for “Janie,” the commander’s daughter. Between steamy scenes that suggest real chemistry and the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis physical comedy, “Sunrise” merges cinema oeuvres and Midland’s signature notes of erotic desire and good times.

Country music mourns the loss of three industry greats

Nashville is mourning the loss of three industry greats over the past weekend, songwriter, Dallas Frazier, acclaimed TV host and on air radio personality, Ralph Emery and country and pop record producer, songwriter, and musician, Jerry Crutchfield. One of country’s most enduring songwriters and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member, Dallas Frazier, passed away at age 82. Frazier’s songs hit the charts with “Elvira” which was a tremendous crossover smash for the Oak Ridge Boys, while Emmylou Harris topped the charts with “Beneath Still Waters,” became one of Nashville’s most sought-after writers, composing hits for Elvis Presley, Moe Bandy, Roy Head, Rodney Crowell, Connie Smith and so many more. “A major loss that will be felt for a long time. It is hard to imagine never hearing a new “Dallas Frazier song,” delivered as it should be and sung by Connie Smith. That team was pure magic.”–Jeannie SeelyThe legendary, Walter Ralph Emery, was a Country music disc jockey and television host from Nashville. He gained national fame hosting the syndicated television music series, Pop Goes the Country (1974 – 1980), Nashville Alive (1981-1982), and Nashville Now (1983-1993). Recognized nationally as “the dean of country music broadcasters,” Ralph Emery was a pioneer in the country radio on air personality world. “When I was an 11-year-old disc jockey in Luverne, Alabama, Ralph Emery was a hero. Our radio station carried his daily syndicated radio show, and it wasn’t hard to sell sponsorships. I was honored to cohost the Mel Tillis Memorial at the Ryman with Ralph in 2018.”–Bobby TomberlinJerry Crutchfield, best known as a hit producer and Nashville music publishing and record company titan who had a hand in signing and developing such top Music Row writers as Dave Loggins, Don Schlitz, Gary Burr and Mark Nesler. Notable albums produced by Crutchfield that obtained gold, platinum, and multi-platinum status include those by Lee Greenwood, Tanya Tucker, Chris LeDoux, Tracy Byrd, and Lisa Brokop. He also produced artists such as Anne Murray, Dottie West, Tammy Wynette, Glen Campbell, Brenda Lee, Buck Owens, Jake Hess, Larry Gatlin, The Gatlin Brothers and Mylon LeFevre. He was also known for producing the No. 1 pop hit, “Please Come to Boston” recorded by Dave Loggins. He was also a very successful songwriter, and musician who recorded for RCA Victor Records with vocal group The Country Gentlemen, later known as The Escorts. “A well-crafted recorded composition belongs to the producer as much as it does an artist, and there were a lot of artists that shared victories with Jerry Crutchfield. He wore many hats in the industry, and it’s insane to think of all the hits that wouldn’t be without him.”–Zacharia Malachi“We have lost three icons of the Nashville music community. They don’t make them like that anymore. They changed the face of music in their unique way. And what they created still reverberates throughout music city.”–Kent Blazy

Review: ‘Where Phones Don’t Work’ – Wade Bowen

Bowen’s latest six-track EP, ‘Where Phones Don’t Work’ is one of the most underrated records to come out of 2021. To our ears, it is one of the most heartfelt and raw collections we heard last year and a really strong EP from the Texas-raised country star. His raspy vocals are full of honesty as he delivers songs about love and his home-state. From the catchy ‘Where We Call Home’ to the melodic hooks of ‘When Love Comes Around’ it’s sure to have your foot tapping along before the record is finished. My favourite track is ‘The Last Town In Texas’, the lovesick song with it’s swooning pedal steel tugs at the heartstrings. Bowen teams up with some esteemed writers to deliver this record, the likes of Eric Paslay, Rhett Akins and Steve Earle all make their mark on this brilliant record that is full of uplifting tunes derived from Bowen’s period of reflection over the last year or so during the pandemic. A mention must be given to producer Paul Moak who has helped to bring these songs to life and capture the passion Bowen first crafted them with.

Review: ‘Tiera’ – Tiera

Over the last decade or more we’ve seen a lot of cross-genre country stars rising through the ranks as the charts lean towards a more pop country sound. However, Tiera’s style is unique, as she blends her R&B influences with her country roots. Her self-titled EP is up-beat and care-free for the most part as she draws on her relationship with her boyfriend (now husband) for lyrical inspiration. There is a shimmer to her vocals as she opens with ‘Found It In You’ with it’s catchy, rhythmic melodies, it’s faint banjo buried in the slick production. ‘Miles’ is a stand out track, it features Breland, the pair’s musical styles are very similar and their voices go well together. ‘Not Your Girl’ is an empowering song, it’s lyrics reminding the listener to be themselves. It’s an EP that’s bound to put a smile on your face. Cameron Bedell has helped Tiera find her niche with the production too, her style unique and refreshing in the country music landscape. With a voice like hers and a passion and knowledge (as displayed on her Apple music show) she has the scope to explore with her sound but I think what she’s doing right now is just perfect.

Callista Clark

Review: ‘Real to Me’ – Callista Clark

Callista Clark is one of the brightest stars shining out in Nashville right now. At only 18 years old her voice is as powerful as label mate’s Carly Pearce, she can play an array of instruments and is writing with some of the best writers in music city. Her first offering introduces us to the young firecracker, who has a lot to say for someone so young. From the heartbreak of ‘Don’t Need It Anymore’ to the attitude and sassiness of ‘Change My Mind’ the emotion in her voice is audible and believable as she delivers every word with power and gusto. The stand out track is single, ‘It’s Cause I Am’, the foot-tapping production frames her voice well, the bass line and drums driving it along. Her falsetto at the end of each line in the chorus adds a new dimension and is a hook in itself. Overall, it’s a brilliant start to life as a country singer, she has the real makings of a future star. Her vocals are to be marvelled at and the partnership of Clark and producer Nathan Chapman is a match made in musical heaven. On the whole, it’s a catchy and fun collection with some real gems amongst the lyrics. I look forward to hearing more.
