Bob Harris

Bob Harris charity single StandByMe (2020)

Music legend, Bob Harris OBE celebrates 50 years in broadcasting this month with a collaboration single StandByMe 2020. From his early days on Radio 1, to the TV Show The Old Grey Whistle Test and to helping co-launch Time Out, he’s done it all. He’s one of the most respected broadcasters in the business, having worked with some of the biggest names in British music. As part of his 50th celebration he’s organising a new charity single of his favourite song – Stand By Me, with proceeds going to Help Musicians. #StandByMe (2020) is a star-studded new charity single raising funds for Help Musicians, the 99-year-old charity that continues to provide vital support to thousands of music creators during this unprecedented time.  Available from October 27th via Under The Apple Tree Records, in partnership with Absolute Label Services, all funds are being raised via the #StandByMe Go Fund Me page which is now live! See here. A huge array of artists have come together under the banner ‘Whispering Bob’s Allstars’ to perform the song remotely, including: Mark Knopfler, Rosanne Cash, Paul Rodgers, PP Arnold, Peter Frampton, Mica Paris, Rick Wakeman, Richard Thompson, Beth Nielsen Chapman, John Oates, Leo Sayer, The Shires and Ward Thomas plus many more – see below for full list. This new recording of the Ben E King classic is spearheaded by the legendary Bob Harris OBE, who celebrates 50 years in broadcasting this year. What better way to mark the occasion than inviting some of his favourite artists to come together to perform his favourite song, 60 years to the day it was originally recorded (27 October 1960) and raise money for a wonderful cause – Help Musicians. Bob Harris OBE, describes how,  “COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on the UK music scene. The artists who rely on live performances for their income have been particularly hard hit. For the past six years Under The Apple Tree has been a fantastic platform for emerging artists and now, in this time of difficulty, we want to raise funds to help the diverse and dedicated grass roots music community that we love so much.” Help Musicians is an independent charity with an extraordinary history. For nearly 100 years, it has provided a broad spectrum of help, support and opportunities to empower musicians aged 18+, at any stage of their career or retirement, from times of great need to times of opportunity, providing a lifetime of support when it is needed most.  Help Musicians aims to make a meaningful difference to the lives of professional musicians and is passionate about creating a world where musicians thrive. James Ainscough, CEO Help Musicians commented, “We’re delighted that Bob Harris OBE, a Help Musicians ambassador for many years, has instigated this wonderful project. Music has sustained so many of us during lockdown, yet tens of thousands of musicians have had their income wiped out. It is through fundraisers such as this that the Help Musicians team can continue to provide the broad range of support that is needed now more than ever.  Thanks to those generously donating, Help Musicians has been able to offer financial hardship support, creative development opportunities and a vital mental health service which reaches the entire music community during this difficult time. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Bob and the team for their continued support, and to everyone who donates to this unique single.” Show your support for the charity and the industry and check out the #StandByMe (2020) Go Fund Me page, which is now live HERE. The Grahams

Exclusive: The Grahams release cover of Yola track 'Faraway Look'

Hot on the heels of the release of their latest album ‘Kids Like Us’, The Grahams have now released a cover of the Yola song Faraway Look. You can watch the video below. [wpdevart_youtube]oyitI-gGCHU[/wpdevart_youtube] The Grahams, consisting of husband and wife duo Doug and Alyssa Graham, released the album at the end of March, but have given fans something new very quickly with this cover. Speaking about the decision to cover the track, Alyssa Graham explained that both her and her partner are huge fans of Yola and that while she recently went through a very concerning and challenging time, there was nothing she wanted to do more once she got the clearance than to cover Yola. “We are huge fans of Yola,” Alyssa said. “While I was recovering from a vocal haemorrhage during COVID, Doug and I were obsessing over her voice.  She is a supremely talented artist and musician based here in Nashville, which is where we spend most of our time. “As soon as I got the green light to start singing we wanted to sing one of her tracks. This cover is just our way of honouring her talent.” In addition to the album, The Grahams are releasing a five-part mini-series of their American journey that helped inspire the record on YouTube. You can watch the first episode below. [wpdevart_youtube]H3QAyZ-oziM[/wpdevart_youtube]

Hailey Whitters

Hailey Whitters releases piano version of 'Dream, Girl'

Rising Nashville artist Hailey Whitters has treated her fans to a delicate, piano version of her hit single, Dream, Girl. You can watch the video below. [wpdevart_youtube]RsKphjDNm3I[/wpdevart_youtube] In addition to the piano release, Whitters has also announced a ‘Live In Studio Sessions’ series, which has been kickstarted by the release of Dream, Girl. Speaking about the series, Whitters explained that it was a way to reconnect with her band, who she had missed tremendously as a result of lockdown, while also explaining that the piano take on Dream, Girl was very natural and didn’t prove to be promlematic at all. “I miss the road and my band immensely,” Whitters explained. “The ‘Live In Studio Sessions’ were a way for us to all regroup and play music together – safely social distancing, of course. “With COVID-19 disrupting touring, we also saw this as an opportunity to deliver these songs in a live setting to fans. I hope it helps curb the ache of live music during this strange time. “Reimagining Dream, Girl felt very effortless and natural. We chose to make it piano-driven while still maintaining some of the ‘80s guitar elements. “It took it to a whole new dimension and depth. The lyrics are able to settle in even more so than before and feel more vulnerable, yet still empowering.” Recently, Hailey Whitters was awarded the Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) Rising Nashville Artist of the Year award.

[wpdevart_youtube]ejmLQiMMRVA[/wpdevart_youtube] Swift will be releasing her new solo album ‘Blonde on the Tracks’ – an album composed of Bob Dylan covers – on August 14, with the record being produced by Patrick Sansone from Wilco. The album can be pre-ordered here. Speaking about the video for the song, Swift opened up on how it was a homage to one of her favourite graphic designers in Milton Glaser, who sadly passed away a few months ago. “This animated clip was created as a loving tribute to graphic designer Milton Glaser, who died in June this year,” Swift said. “His bold and fabulous designs have inspired so many and his iconic 1967 Dylan poster is a favourite of mine. “As artists, no matter what field we’re working in, we’re always in search of what Glaser famously coined the ‘wow’ factor. His colourful, surrealistic vision was more than ‘wow’ though, it was revolutionary. “From his famous ‘I Heart NY’ logo to the spectacular closing credits for the final season of ‘Mad Men’, Glaser left behind a tremendously inspiring visual legacy and I am forever a fan.”

Stuart will be going into the Hall of Fame under the ‘Modern Era Artist’ category, Williams Jr. will be going in as a ‘Veterans Era Artist, while Dillon will be entering under the ‘Songwriter’ category. Speaking about the inductees, Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer, said that she was overjoyed to be able to welcome the three into the Hall of Fame and while the pandemic has put a halt to this taking place at a ceremony in person, she is hopeful that it can bring positivity to the genre. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Dean, Marty and Hank Jr. into the unbroken circle and honour this revered milestone,” Trahern said. “I’m sad we can’t toast this year’s class in person at the Country Music Hall of Fame, but I hope this news can bring some joy and cause for celebration during this time that our world has turned upside down. “In particular, our hearts are with Hank and his family following the recent loss of his daughter, Katherine.” In normal circumstances, the CMA would host a press conference in the rotunda of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, but alas that cannot happen this year. However, a formal induction ceremony for the trio will take place, with details on that to come as and when.

Arlo McKinley 'Die Midwestern'

Cincinnati singer-songwriter, Arlo McKinley has announced his remarkable debut solo album Die Midwestern will be released on August 14 via John Prine’s independent Oh Boy Records. Deeply rooted in street soul, country, punk, and gospel, with lyrics stark and arresting in their honesty, Die Midwestern sees 40-year-old McKlinley poised for success, after he almost gave up on music altogether before he caught the attention of Prine. Living proof that great songs will eventually reach the right ears, mcKinley reflects, “I’m a little wiser in my ways and a 20 something me would’ve found a way to destroy the one dream that has stuck with me my entire life.” Arlo is the last artist John Prine and his son Jody signed together to their label Oh Boy Records. Jody stated, “John was reserved in his praise for songwriters. I played him a couple of Arlo’s songs and he heard Bag Of Pills and said, “that’s a good song” which for him, was very high praise. He loved Arlo’s voice, this big guy with a sweet, soulful, gospel voice. He loved the dichotomy of the hard life lived, presented through such beautiful songs and John was very excited about the promise of the album’s release.” McKinley added, “The feeling of knowing that a hero of mine took time out of his day to come see me perform is such an accomplishment in itself to me that if it all ended the next day and I found out music just wasn’t in the cards for me, I would’ve still considered everything I have done as a success” McKinley almost missed his big break, which came when he was offered an opening slot for Tyler Childers. His now manager was trying to reach him to offer him an opening slot and Arlo initially dodged the persistent unknown caller. Since, McKinley has been humbly sharing stages with kindred musical spirits John Moreland, Jason Isbell, Justin Townes Earle. Die Midwestern was recorded at Memphis’ legendary Sam Phillips Recording Service and was produced by GRAMMY award-winning Matt Ross-Spang along with an all-star Memphis band of Ken Coomer, David Smith, Will Sexton, Rick Steff, Jessie Munson and Reba Russell. McKinley recorded ten remarkable songs – some dating back fifteen years – all penned with a weight, honesty and gritty-hope that comes from living in Cincinnati, the rustbelt city where his songs were born. ‘Die Midwestern’ Tracklist  We Were Alright Die Midwestern She’s Always Around Bag of Pills The Hurtin’s Done Suicidal Saturday Night Once Again Whatever You Want Gone For Good Walking Shoes   Follow us on social media and share this post! Twitter, Facebook, Instagram See more news here.
