Dylan Schneider at London

Live Review – Dylan Schneider @ Nashville Meets London

What were you doing when you were 18? Some of you may have been adapting to university life and turning up hungover in lectures, others would be getting used to the grind of work life, and some of you would be still have been deciding what step next to take in life. Then there are the exceptions to the rule – and American singer-songwriter Dylan Schneider is very much an exception to the rule, as at 8:45PM on the Saturday of Nashville Meets London, the 18-year-old took to the stage as headliner of a country music festival, on his first visit to the English capital. Strutting on stage with a beer in his hand – which he can legally drink in the UK, of course – and a guitar in the other, it was clear that Schneider had come to have a good time – and so it proved, with the teen sensation delivering a blockbuster of a set on what is his UK festival debut. Launching straight into ‘No Problem’ – his most recent single – it was clear that Schneider meant business, and with a live band backing him, the song had a rockier punch to it, alongside the crisp vocals from the 18-year-old. Having just three EPs, it speaks volumes of Schneider’s quality that he’s being chosen to headline festivals already – though one potential drawback is that there is a lack of material. To coin his recent single as a phrase, that’s very much no problem for Schneider, who threw in some delightful covers that showcased his range as an artist – fans were treated to a meatier version of Florida Georgia Line’s ‘Cruise’, before slowing down Jason Aldean’s ‘My Kinda Party’, while the stand out cover was Schneider’s take on ‘Body Like a Back Road’ by Sam Hunt, which was performed acoustically to sublime effect. Schneider’s own songs though are the ones that steal the show, and the sheer quality of them is breathtaking for someone so young. Set closer ‘Two Black X’s’ was the perfect way to end a set, while songs like ‘Gimme a Red Light’ and ‘How Bad Can One Kiss Hurt’ really do showcase the potential Schneider has. Just before leaving the stage, Schneider turned to the crowd and said “I’ll never forget this” – those in attendance won’t be forgetting this performance in a hurry either, as the 18-year-old is set for huge things within the genre. What were you doing when you were 18?   Dylan Schneider played: No Problem You Heard Wrong Cruise – Florida Georgia Line cover How Bad Can One Kiss Hurt Gimme a Red Light My Kinda Party – Jason Aldean cover Wannabe Rockstar Body Like a Back Road – Sam Hunt cover How Does It Sound Friends in Low Places – Garth Brooks cover Two Black X’s Review by Christian Brown All pictures were taken by Paul Clampin

Millport Country Music Festival 2018

Looking ahead to the Millport Country Music Festival 2018

The countdown is on to Millport Country Music Festival 2018. Back for it’s 24th year this community event remains Scotland’s biggest independent country music festival and will take place between 7th and 9th September. Last year saw nearly ten thousand country music fans of all ages come to the island on the West of Scotland to enjoy the music, soak up the atmosphere and experience the beautiful seaside town of Millport in a different light. 2018 however will see the festival’s biggest line-up yet. With 50 artists representing some of the best country music talent from Scotland, across the UK, Ireland, Sweden and the USA; appearing on 4 live music stages within the grounds of Garrison House at the heart of the town. Jesse Dayton, the ‘hardcharging’ Texan Outlaw Country star, will headline Nashfield on the Saturday, while Eastenders star Shane Richie will feature his new album, “A Country Soul”, during his headline spot on Sunday. From traditional to modern, from Americana to country rock, and just about every country taste in between. Including music from the daughter of the legendary Glen Campbell, Ashley Campbell; with their amazing harmonies, the UK’s hottest country offering this year The Wandering Hearts; singer-songwriter Jarrod Dickenson, Appalachian story-teller Jerry Harmon, Nashville duo American Young, The Remedy Club, Liv Austen, Jess and The Bandits, Gary Quinn and more… The offering from local Scottish bands is equally as impressive with Glasgow based Ashton Lane returning following their much talked about performance at last year’s festival, Glasgow country-rock duo Raintown, Kevin McGuire, Katee Kross, Red Pine Timber Co, The Logans, Jim McLean, James ‘N’ Wood, Stillwater, Stateline and the amazing story of now US based blues and country guitarist Joshua Roberts (aka Kid Millport) returning to the place he was born and spent his infant years. A first for this year will be the Millport Emerging Talent Showcase on Sunday 9th September, sponsored by Maverick Magazine and hosted by Scottish singer-songwriter Katee Kross. Scott Watson of the festival organising team said, “This was our chance to go out and find 10 great up and coming artists and offer the opportunity to play on a festival stage as well as win a recording session with BlackRoom Sessions and a guaranteed slot at next year’s festival. We were overwhelmed by the volume and standard of the response we received to this, and the concept of potentially finding and helping an artist that could in future years be back headlining one of our stages, has been really exciting.” As was the case in 2017, there will be an extended ferry service  from Largs to Cumbrae Slip operated by Calmac on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th, enabling day visitors to enjoy even more of the music into the evening. Camping and Glamping for those that wish to stay, with showers and toilets, will be available at Millport Golf Club; and a superb food, drink and entertainment offering from local businesses both on site and throughout the town as Millport once again becomes Nashville for the weekend. Tickets are on sale now at millportcountrymusic.com/ticket-info/

Maddie & Tae believe it's still 'trickier' for female artists within country music

Country music duo Maddie & Tae are firmly of the belief that females within the genre are “neglected” and find it “trickier” than their male counterparts to succeed. The duo, made up of Madison Marlow and Taylor Dye, famously smashed through the doors of Nashville with their debut single, ‘Girl in a County Song’ from their ‘Start Here’ album, which is all about how women are regarded within the country music genre. Speaking to All Access in the aftermath of their latest single, ‘Friends Don’t’, the duo insisted that their experiences are no joke, and lifted the lid on how females are treated behind the scenes in country music.   “We released ‘Girl In A Country Song’ to kind of wake people up,” Marlow said “It talks about not being a girl in a country song, but also about how we’re being neglected in this genre. “I do think it’s gotten better since we first came onto the scene, but it’s still hard. Even right now with ‘Friends Don’t,’ it’s really hard out there. “It’s hard for any artist to get their song played, but I think it’s trickier for women. A lot of that stuff you just can’t control – if a station wants to play your song or not – you just have to make great relationships and be kind. “We just hope that we’re making music, as females, that people – men and women – can connect with and relate to, because that’s our job as songwriters. “So, hopefully we make that connection with people through music. It’s a mystery to me, because there are great female artists that aren’t getting airplay, and it blows my mind.” Maddie & Tae have a concept album on the horizon, which will be their first under the Mercury Nashville label, and have plans for a tour in the autumn of 2018.

Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha break Billboard's Hot country songs chart record

A Billboard Hot country songs chart record has been broken, with country duo Florida Georgia Line and pop star Bebe Rexha’s crossover hit, ‘Meant to Be’, remaining as number one for the last 35 weeks. The song has overtaken Sam Hunt’s ‘Body Like a Back Road’, which was in the number one position in 2017 for a staggering 34 weeks. Florida Georgia Line drew their line in the sand and have opted to go for a more pop based sound in, and the song with Bebe Rexha has been a monumental hit, to put it mildly. The chart itself takes into account airplay, sales and streaming, and the song was written by Rexha, Josh Miller, David Garcia and FGL’s Tyler Hubbard. The song also peaked at number two on the Hot 100 chart by Billboard. Bebe Rexha has included the song on both her 2017 EP, ‘All Your Fault: Pt 2’ and her debut album, ‘Expectations’, which was released in June.

Catherine McGrath

How Catherine McGrath became the Talk of This Town

To promote her newly released album, ‘Talk of This Town’, Catherine McGrath treated fans to an intimate performance at HMV Oxford Street, London, followed by a signing session. Maverick’s Christian Brown spoke to the rising country music star on the day. How are you feeling now the album has been released? I still don’t feel it’s real! As soon as the album came out, I could see people tweeting about it, and I don’t think it’s sunk in at all yet. It’s just crazy. I’ve been working on the album for what feels like, the whole musical journey that I’ve been on. I’ve had these songs for myself and I’ve been wondering if people will like them, so now they are out in the world, it’s insane – literally anyone can hear these songs that are so personal to me. It’s so exciting, and to have the reaction that I’ve had has been amazing, so I’m really excited about it. One of the things you told us last time we interviewed you, was that you cut down from around 100 songs – how difficult was that? It was hard for me to pick which ones I wanted people to hear, and to decide which ones represented me best – that was the hardest part. But in the end, me and Phil Christie from Warner were like, ‘let’s both go away and make our own lists, and just see what songs we both say’, and we came back with basically the exact same lists. That made it easier for me, because if we both like the songs, they were probably the strongest songs, and the ones that people would like most.  Judging by the response, people do love the songs, so I think we made the right choice. Do you think any of those songs that were cut out might see the light of day as B sides? Maybe! A lot of the songs that are on the album we’ve bought back from EP’s and stuff, so they are definitely ones that I absolutely love, and might kind of bring back at some point.  We will see. Second album? Yeah, we will see if we get that far! How was it working with Hunter Hayes, on ‘Don’t let Me Forget’? That was so cool. I wrote it before I actually knew Hunter was going to be on it. I loved the song so much, and when it came to picking the album tracks, it was like, ‘what if we made this one a duet’? I sent that over to Hunter, who I’d met a few times before, and we weren’t sure if he was going to like it, or what his opinion was going to be – but he loved it so much, that he was like, ‘yeah, I will sing on it and play guitar on it as well’. That was really cool, and we got to shoot the video together in Nashville, and he is such a lovely guy and so, so talented.  I can’t believe he is on the album, I’ve been a huge fan for years. Speaking of Nashville, you said to us last time that it was a place you’d love to live in the future. When are you going next?  I will hopefully be going back at the end of August to do more songwriting. I’ve been seven times now, and it just feels like home to me.  The songwriters are amazing. It’s just somewhere that I wanted to go for so long, and the fact that I’m able to go over there now is insane. I’d love to get to play more shows there, and kind of explore the country scene more, and see what people think of my music over there. How did you find the initial songwriting sessions in Nashville?  It was everything. Every time I go over, its just so surreal – especially that first writing session with Liz Rose. To have Liz for my first songwriting session, with her being someone I looked up to for so long was incredible for me. I think the thing that shocks me most is just how accepting everyone there is of someone coming over from Ireland, the other side of the world, and saying that they want to do country music. For that whole community to accept it, and be so welcoming and so kind to me…that was incredible. Going back to Liz Rose, and the work you did with her on ‘Cinderella’, how was it working with one of Taylor Swift’s songwriters from her country days?  It was so weird just walking in and seeing all these pictures of the songs she’s written on the walls – like there was Taylor Swift and Hunter Hayes, and I was like, I can’t believe that you’re writing my songs with me! I’ve seen her name in the albums, and everything, and she was so lovely to work with – she just talked to me a bit about what I wanted to write about and who I was, and where I was from, and then the song actually happened really fast. It was quite a natural process as well, which was nice. Were there any songs that you’ve had to labour over to get into a position that you’re happy with it? It’s so strange the way that works. I think in the UK it tends to take longer to write the songs, and I don’t know if that’s because it’s harder to write them, or because it is a different vibe. In Nashville, the songwriters write three songs a day, so they are used to doing all of that.  I don’t know if any were more difficult to write, but in Nashville, they do tend to happen quicker. In any case, all the songs on the album are songs that I love and am proud of. One thing that I’ve noticed is that a lot of people are referring to you as the Northern Irish Taylor Swift
