Eilidh Patterson

Album review – 'Sunshine' by Eilidh Patterson

Eilidh Patterson SUNSHINE Self-released **** A very impressive release from the Northern Ireland star Fans of Eilidh Patterson will know that one of the notable characteristics from her songs is warmth – her vocals in particular wrap around you like a blanket in the winter. Now on her fourth album, that hasn’t changed in the slightest. Opening with the upbeat title track Sunshine, Patterson takes you on a journey that’s finely woven by gentle guitar strings and a superb voice. This is epitomised on True Love is Returned – perhaps the standout track on the album – and it’s very easy to find you being swept away by the structure of the song and the “a-woo” element of the chorus. It’s been almost a decade since Patterson released her first album, ‘When the Time Comes’, but she sounds better than ever on her most recent release.   Rob Ramsey www.eilidhpatterson.com

Kimmie Rhodes

Live review – Kimmie Rhodes @ The Forge, Basingstoke

Kimmie Rhodes (with Bob Harris) The Forge, Basingstoke 5 October 2018   When the people at Maverick approached Kimmie Rhodes with a view to including an article in a forthcoming magazine, she persuaded them it would be great if she could write the piece herself. Her good friend Bob Harris read the article in the July/August 2015 edition and was so impressed, he suggested she write an autobiography. And so, ‘Radio Dreams’ was born. With his own work ‘Still Whispering After All These Years’ already on the bookshelves, the inevitable outcome was a tour featuring intimate and spontaneous conversation with music. Having written the book, Kimmie realised she needed a song to go with it and so kicked things off with the appropriately titled Radio Dreams, a great country number written with her song writing compatriot Gary Nicholson. Hailing originally from Lubbock, Texas, but for many years a part of the vibrant Austin, Texas music scene, she is an enthusiastic supporter of The Buddy Holly Educational Foundation and paid homage with her rendition of Raining in My Heart. Bob Harris was keen to learn of the artist’s early career and Kimmie gave us The Old Rugged Cross, the first song she had sung for a very impressed Willie Nelson. Much chatter meant things were starting to get behind time so Kimmie speeded into the break with I Just Drove Byand from the very early days, Just One Love. Harris paid tribute to Kimmie’s son Gabe Rhodes who assumed production responsibilities after the untimely passing of husband Joe Gracey in 2011 and after Love Me Like a Song, Gabe took centre stage with Further to Fall. Donovan’sCatch the Windreminded Bob Harris that Kimmie had taught his son, budding guitarist Miles, chords to the song, but highlight of what was an amazing evening was Rodney Crowell’s Til I Gain Control Again, a magical duet with son Gabe. Kimmie has for years lived in awe of Emmylou Harris, now another close friend, and no show would be complete without Love and Happiness, her duet with Emmylou raising Kimmie’s musical profile even further. Fearful that some in the audience might have nodded off through all the conversation, she upped the tempo with Bells of Joya number written for an Austin gospel choir, before she closed with her song of positivity, Yes from the latest album ‘Cowgirl Boudoir’. Kimmie of course has the voice of an angel and highly talented son Gabe must now be in the premier league of acoustic/slide guitarists. Bob Harris O.B.E. has been a household name to music lovers for some five decades and his legendary ‘whispering’ is simply infectious. Clearly enjoying his ‘master of ceremonies’ role, Bob spent the evening totally engrossed in the music. Anyone in the audience not familiar with Kimmie Rhodes cannot fail to have been impressed. Beth Nielsen Chapman 2018

Live review – Beth Nielsen Chapman @ Festival of Sound 2018

Beth Nielsen Chapman Festival of Sound – Hammersmith, London, England 29/9/18 Those who love country music will almost certainly be aware of Beth Nielsen Chapman’s talents, and the artist delivered an exceptional performance at the Festival of Sound in London. After being introduced by the iconic presenter Whispering Bob Harris, Chapman – taking to the stage with solo artist Ruth Trimble and Gregor Philp from Deacon Blue – opened up with Enough for Me from her latest album, ‘Hearts of Glass’ and laid down a marker as to how the next hour would go with a stellar showing. Chapman was very engaging with her audience, and in-between songs went out of her way to give the crowd an anecdote or a story that was relevant to the song she was getting ready to play, or her life. One such story was about her song Nothing I Can Do About it Now with Willie Nelson, which she said he loved the album it featured on so much, that before it was released, he was going round a golf course on a buggy with a ghetto blaster playing it out. As with most of her tracks, there is huge emotional pull towards them, and before she put in a blistering display of Epitaph of Love, Chapman explained that the song took her 18 years to write, and came to her after a notable argument with her husband. Sticking with the theme of partners, All I Have was next, and Chapman introduced the song by saying “This is played at a lot of weddings, and has a very low divorce rate! Thank you to the lovely Bob Harris and Radio 2.” There was a very powerful rendition of Sand and Water, which Chapman revealed was written a month after her first husband died, and was one of the standout moments of the set. Closing on This Kiss, Chapman performed that song as she had performed her set – brilliantly and with lots of energy, leaving the audience walking away knowing they had been treated that evening.

Star is Born

Film review – 'A Star is Born'

A Star is Born Warner Bros. Pictures ***** Silence is a very powerful thing. The way that ‘A Star is Born’ comes to a close, with a silent final scene, will be one of the most harrowing and moving scenes displayed on a cinema screen this year. Silence is also in complete contrast to the rest of the film, which represents a musical masterpiece led by Bradley Cooper as lead character Jackson Maine, and the excellent Lady Gaga as Ally. There was a lot of talk of this film being Oscar worthy by critics, and it’s very easy to see why that is the case. It will almost certainly be nominated for the likes of Best Original Song, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing, but it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Cooper could get nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role. It’s also very possible that Gaga could be nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, such was the brilliance in their performance. Those thinking that the film is just a straight up love story are very mistaken, as the film contains a sinister edge that ranges from Maine’s growing alcohol addiction, to the way the story pans out, which adds a very dark and emotional element. The trail of destruction left by Maine’s alcoholism will strike a chord with pretty much anyone, and once the realisation hits, it’s such a compelling and gut-wrenching moment that is captured perfectly. Cooper sought help from Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder before taking on ‘A Star is Born’, and what strikes you the most is Cooper’s ability to sing – it’s to the point that you very easily forget it’s an actor singing these songs, and it gives the film a very authentic feel. For a film about music, it was critical that the use of music in the film was spot on – and indeed, it was. Lukas Nelson and Gaga played a big part in the soundtrack, with Nelson and his band – The Promise of the Real – making up Maine’s band in the film, but the timing of the tracks is genius. As an example, the use of LCD Soundsystem’s New York I Love You, But You’re Bringing Me Down when Ally finds out a remarkable piece of news is sublime on every level imaginable, and the original songs that are used in the film – namely the huge duets between Maine and Ally, or when Ally has the piano at her disposal – are excellent, and are testament to the staggering levels of musical ability that Nelson and Gaga have. Some elements seem a bit farfetched – for example, Ally’s songs seem to cover just about every genre imaginable and are all wedged into one setlist – but by and large, this is an exceptionally well written and directed film, and is so good that you can look past the small bits you may question. Just bring some tissues if you’re prone to crying at films – you’ll need them if so, especially when the silence hits.

Zoee at the Viper Club, Glasgow Scotland

Live review: Zoee @ the Viper Club, Glasgow, Scotland – 29th September

In the heart of the West End of Glasgow, Scotland, is the Viper Club – a place full of energy, youth, fun, and most of all great music. Taking to the stage on the 29th September for the Infinitime Music Award (IMA) pre-show was Australian singer-songwriter Zoee and her band, which consists of her father Dundee and her brother Zedd. Zoee performed three original songs for the evening, and the soulful nature of the songs were a delight to the audience’s ears – proving just why the Australian was one of the selected performers at the award pre-show. First up was It’s the Weekend, which saw Zoee mix things up with a bit of light rapping and this proved to be a hit with the audience, who engaged with the song by clapping along and singing. The new single This Time came next, and was performed by Zoee with just her acoustic guitar. A much slower song, Zoee brought an intimate feel to proceedings and invoked a lot of emotion from the crowd. Finally, Zoee ended the night with Rolling Stone, which is yet to be released but is a regular live staple, and brought the house down with it. A personal story for Zoee, this tells the tale of her family moving to the United Kingdom and chasing her career in music. Zoee and the band displayed a great level of confidence and enjoyment as they interacted with their audience regularly, and even when she is singing a delicate ballad like This Time, you can easily relate with her voice and emotion as you feel yourself draw in closer. As a result of her performance, Zoee was asked to perform at the IMA Awards, which takes place on the 24thNovember. Ana-Maria Stanescu

Jennifer Nettles to appear in upcoming Harriet Tubman biopic

Sugarland singer, Jennifer Nettles will be one of the cast members of an upcoming feature film about the life of abolitionist Harriet Tubman. The film will be titled ‘Harriet’ and according to a statement announcing the project, the feature “follows Tubman on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil war adversity.” In addition to Nettles, the cast will include Tony award winner Cynthia Erivo who will star as Tubman. Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn and Clarke Peters have also been announced as part of the cast although their specific roles have yet to be confirmed. The film will be directed by award-winning Eve’s Bayou Director, Kasi Lemmons and is based on a screenplay she co-wrote with Gregory Allen Howard, the screenwriter behind Ali and Remember The Titans. “This is the story of a seemingly powerless woman who accomplished the extraordinary to save her loved ones, and in the process became a leader of and inspiration for her people,” Chase and Lundberg state. “While Harriet Tubman is a household name, most people don’t know the breadth of her story — not only was she a conductor on the Underground Railroad, but she was a spy for the Union army and remains one of the few women to have led an armed expedition in U.S. history.” “Tubman’s courageous life and the scope of her bravery is truly made to be told on the big screen. The countless lives she saved, during a time of such hatred and danger to herself, can be described only as heroic,” Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski adds. “We’re thrilled to be working with this incredibly talented group of filmmakers led by Kasi, Debra, Daniela, and Greg and this multi-talented group of actors in bringing Tubman’s life to film.”

Following the success of February’s event, which featured a live performance Megan O’Neill, the popular country club night will return for their fourth event with special live guest Canaan Cox as part of his UK tour on 28th September at Under The Bridge. Canaan Cox is a manifestation of the phrase “hard work pays off.” With a “rules are meant to be broken” attitude, this NC bred country star has taken Nashville by storm. Book: Wasted Days and Wasted Nights

Book Review: Wasted Days and Wasted Nights

Freddy Fender, real name Baldemar Garza Huerta, was a genre breaking musician that is claimed by Mexican-American Tejano Country, Country Music and Rock and Roll music styles.  I’ve always been a fan of his incredible heartfelt vocals and passionate delivery. Freddy’s daughter, Tammy Lorraine Huerta Fender, wrote this tribute autobiography about her father to keep his memory alive with young and old generations for the groundbreaker he was.  What I enjoy about a book like this, if it is done well, is that you learn deeper details about the artist that only a family member can know and share.  Before his passing in October of 2006 Freddy Fender had made multiple attempts to write is own autobiography but always came to a stopping point.  Tammy felt that it was her duty, as a daughter, to accomplish what her father was not able to in his lifetime.  In the early pages Tammy shares a picture that includes her and her father while he is acting on the set of the movie “She Came to the Valley” in 1979.  The first meeting between father and daughter was not until Tammy was two and a half years old after her father was released from a Louisiana prison for possession of marijuana.  Freddy’s family immigrated from Mexico to find work in Texas during a volatile political time.  Pictures of the Huerta home in San Benito, Texas show it as a simple pieced together home with an outhouse attached.  Their family was very poor and Freddy was forced to steal for food and even dumpster dive behind grocery stores for thrown away food.  Even as a young boy Freddy would win contests singing songs and this carried over into his teen years.  In junior high school, the faculty allowed Fender to play at a school assembly.  Even then he predicted that one day his name would be on a big marquee, and he was right!  Some of the bars he would try to sing in wouldn’t allow him to enter due to the color of his skin so Freddy came up with a plan.  He would take his little brother and ask a patron of the bar to hold his little brother while he sang to the crowds, then he would retrieve his sibling and hurry back home!  Fender also served his country as a Marine but found it hard to adhere to the military regulations and rules.  Freddy made history as the first Chicano singer to sing Rock and Roll in Spanish.  Although he performed under different names he legally changed his name to Freddy Fender in 1958 after the American guitar and amplifier brand.  In the 1970’s Fender’s career flourished with hits “Before the Next Teardrop Falls,” “Secret Love,” and “Lose a Good Thing.” And a remake of his own song “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” which reached number one on the Billboard country music charts in 1975.  Freddy won a total of three Grammy awards in his career and performed on the stage of Grand Ole Opry.  Tammy Lorraine Huerta Fender, the Tex-Mex Princess, has done her father justice with this book.  The family photos, honest stories and interwoven lyrics make a great read.  “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” will help maintain his great legacy! – Eric Dahl
