Steven Tyler and Joe Perry

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry "each other's biggest supporters" despite country music fall out

Filmmaker Casey Tebo has documented Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler’s journey from rock’n’roll to country music in a new film. The documentary entitled ‘Steven Tyler: Out On a Limb’ was made by the film maker after first meeting Tyler back in 2004, going on to direct two concert films and a music video for Aerosmith. Back in 2016, Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry told USA Today he wasn’t buying into his longtime bandmate’s move to country, saying: “Hey, if I didn’t know him when I heard the song I’d go, ‘It’s OK, next.’” The documentary explains the fallout and why Perry never really ‘bought in’ to Tyler’s passion for the genre. In the documentary it is revealed that Nashville feels like home for Steven where he is able to show his love for motorcycles. Tebo also recounts in the documentary Tyler being obsessed with Alison Krauss.

Marie Marx

Marie Marx: "The team and I are aiming high and the only way is up!"

As rollercoasters go the start of 2018 has been pretty much that for northern singer-songwriter, Marie Marx, allowing herself a number of firsts along the way. Her eclectic mix of bluegrass, folk, jazz and country styles are ensuring Marie caters for a number of different tastes and it is those which have seen her land her first O2 Academy gig, supporting Brooklyn’s Mishka Shubaly when he heads to Newcastle as part of his UK tour on June 14. “This is a big step for me but not a step that I’m scared of,” Marie told Maverick.  “I’m extremely excited to be playing support for Mishka; it will be a great experience I’m sure! Plus, the support I’ve received already regarding it is totally overwhelming.” Just finishing off touring her debut album, THIS IS THE THING, a ten track stairway to blissful heaven which has seen her tour quirky micro pubs and brewery haunts across her native North-East & Yorkshire, Marie moved fast to make the rest of the year just as enjoyable. Enlisting the services of a new manager, the Shubaly gig, an appearance on Metro Radio’s iconic Night Owls with Alan Robson MBE, as well as a few other things in the pipeline, it’s shaping up to be an interesting year in mainstream music. “I’m extremely busy but that’s just the way I love, excited is an understatement,” continued Marie whose husband Rob has backed her completely in her music ventures, so much so that she was able to leave employment to pursue her dreams. It’s a new adventure and we welcome the unknown. Marie added, “We’re both enjoying the ride and it’s been great meeting new people and exploring different avenues. The interview (print and radio alike) side of things is all new to me but I’m loving chatting about what I’m passionate about.” Her recent outing on Night Owls was testament to her progression and abilities, showing how far she has come in such a short space of time, Alan Robson even stating that she “can go far, national tours, it’s possible you know – keep writing and never stop.” Advice of such a high calibre from a DJ of such high-standing strengthened the belief within, Marie and her team readying to push the boundaries over the coming months, and years. “We have a few tricks up our sleeve for the rest of the year,” stated Marie. “We’ve some really great plans and things are happening every day. The team and I are aiming high and the only way is up!”

Israel Nash Announces new Album

Israel Nash announces new album, 'Lifted'

Texas’ genre-bending rock ‘n’ roller Israel Nash announces his fifth studio album ‘Lifted’,a modern day hippie-spiritual, which finds Nash continuing his tradition of creating a sonic landscape that is at once both vast and intimate – soaring and untamed at times, placid and sincerely personal at others. Accompanied by his longtime band, with arrangements by Jesse Chandler (Mercury Rev, Midlake), horns by members of Austin’s cumbia/funk compadre’s Grupo Fantasma, and strings from Kelsey Wilson and Sadie Wolf (Wild Child), Nash, alongside co-producer and engineer Ted Young (Kurt Vile, The Rolling Stones), presents an album that soars with meticulously crafted, multi-hued rock and psychedelia. ‘Lifted’ opens with an extended instrumental introduction before blossoming into lead single ‘Rolling On’. The track acts as the album’s manifesto, an anthem of urgency, encouraging the listener to let go of yesterday’s troubles and move forward with positivity. The album was recorded at Israel Nash’s own studio, a Quonset hut structure called Plum Creek Sound at his home in Dripping Springs, Texas. During the process the studio became a sanctuary for Nash, a creative environment where he often reached a meditative state of escapism, creating a space where he could leave behind his downhearted feelings about the current political landscape and the bigger, existential questions those concerns raise. Being able to finally use Plum Creek Sound to its full potential, Nash set about recording found sounds and field recordings from his Texas ranch, with the aim of creating a listening experience that was almost an immersive representation of his environment. Drums played in rain collection tanks, water rushing against the limestone, frogs, crickets, and even a rattlesnake all appear throughout the record. Taking inspiration from methods pioneered by John Cage, Nash then randomized the sounds and music before rearranging them according to the I Ching (The Book of Changes). This process of experimenting, as Nash explains, was key to the making of ‘Lifted’ “It’s all about finding, searching for little sparks of inspiration. It may be a sound, a groove, a colour, or even an object. Old things are inspiring. Whatever it is, when you find it, it spreads like a conflagration that is out of your control. It doesn’t matter if you’re making a record or living your life, find these inspirations with a vigil eye and watch them change both you and your world.” ‘Lifted’ is Israel Nash’s opus, a fully realised, psychedelic, experimental, Americana rooted epic. From the familial harmonies of ‘Sweet Springs,’ recalling the Beach Boys at their most joyous (almost all performed by Nash himself), to the country rock of ‘Lucky Ones’ and ‘SpiritFalls’ to the sunshine laden album closer ‘Golden Fleeces’, it is a startlingly accomplished work from beginning to end. In support of the release, Israel Nash and his full band will tour across Europe in November 2018. This will be preceded with two special solo shows in Oxford and Guildford this June. Pre-order ‘Lifted’ HERE.

Jimmie Allen Music Video

Newcomer Jimmie Allen set to impress fans with music video

Jimmie Allen’s brand new music video for his first single “Best Shot” made its world premiere over the weekend on the major US music channel CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown. The personal song, inspired by advice from Jimmie’s grandmother, is currently climbing the country radio charts after debuting as the 2nd ‘Most Added’ song. Drawing inspiration from the honest and self-reflective nature of the song, the video, directed by Ford Fairchild, brings “Best Shot” to life with a look back through Jimmie’s journey to becoming the man he is today. With family photos and home movies from his childhood, the video showcases Jimmie’s more introspective side, however it’s evident in the behind-the-scenes video for “Best Shot,” (which debuted exclusively on One Country here) that the gregarious singer’s personable demeanour, which fans have come to know from his docu-series ‘Jimmie Allen All In’ is unshakable. “To me ‘Best Shot’ is about accepting that we all have flaws, we all make mistakes and we’ll all experience a few bumps in the road but all of those hardships lead us to where we are today so at the end of the day, what really counts is that you’re trying your best and giving life your all,” said Allen. “My family has always been such a large part of my journey so it was incredibly special for me to incorporate them into my first-ever music video. It’s a really cool full circle moment to be able to share with them.” This music video comes on the heels of a remarkable Grand Ole Opry debut, which earned him a standing ovation, as well as the release of a brand new song. “21” is the first track in a new collection of songs the singer calls the “Slower Lower Sessions.”Jimmie will share a new song from the series, which are all inspired by memories growing up in the “Slower Lower” region of Delaware, each month leading up to the launch of his full-length album, due later this year. “Best Shot” was first introduced to the world through Jimmie’s self-titled EP, which was released late last year on BBR/BMG and subsequently earned him recognition on nearly every “One to Watch” list for 2018. Signed to BBR Music Group’s Stoney Creek Records, Allen released his self-titled debut EP in 2017, featuring a cutting-edge mix of country, rock, R&B, and pop produced by Ash Bowers and Eric Torres. The Southern Delaware native’s talent for songwriting is undeniable, having written a song that was featured in a Super Bowl commercial and appeared in a Diet Coke ad with megastar Taylor Swift. “Blue Jean Baby,” off his debut EP, immediately caught the attention of country music fans and critics alike with its soulful groove— rocketing it to #8 on Spotify’s Viral Top 50 chart and #5 on Spotify’s Wild Country playlist. “Best Shot’ has already received early international support, including BBC Radio airplay along with Baylen Leonard picking the song as Record of the Week on Chris Country.

Shooter Jennings

New LP from Shooter Jennings

For nearly two decades, Shooter Jennings has defied expectation while constantly expanding the parameters of country, rock ‘n’ roll, and beyond. The scion of American music royalty, he has affirmed his own place in histories still to come as a truly limitless artist whose ambitious experimentation spans myriad genres and creative platforms, from releasing seven solo LPs, countless EPs, and founding his own label and multimedia outlet, Black Country Rock, to hosting his “Shooter Jennings’ Electric Rodeo” on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country channel, producing music by Jamey Johnson, Wanda Jackson, and his mom, Jessi Colter, and the creation of acclaimed BBS Door games (available via his own BCRGames.com). Produced by longtime friend and collaborator, Low Country Sound founder Dave Cobb, at the renowned RCA Studio A on Nashville’s Music Row, SHOOTER sees Jennings staking out a fairly straightforward goal: to simply make a great country record. It should be noted, Jennings’ last studio album was a genuinely visionary tribute to Giorgio Moroder so in some ways, making a straight up country record is as much of a left turn as anything else in his brilliantly mercurial career thus far. But with tunes like “Fast Horses & Good Hideouts” and the brass-fueled boogie-woogie of “Bound Ta Git Down,” Jennings more than affirms his mission by returning to country’s original, if oft misplaced, mandate: singing songs about growing up and getting older, about going out and getting trashed. In short, making music for real people with real lives. With SHOOTER, Jennings truly puts his own mark on country music, living up to his extraordinary birthright with unparalleled passion, experience, and heart. “It’s a very honest record,” Jennings says. “There are no magic tricks. It’s really stuff that’s from the heart; it really encapsulates a lot of the styles I’ve done across all my records. Dave said, ‘Can’t we just call it SHOOTER?’ I said, I love that. Let’s just call it SHOOTER.” Heralded as one of 2018’s “30 Most Anticipated Albums,” SHOOTER is available for pre-order. All pre-orders are joined by an instant download of the project’s first single, “Fast Horses & Good Hideouts” which sees Jennings and GRAMMY Award-winning producer Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell) sharing songwriting credit with iconoclastic character actor Randy Quaid. In addition, the single is joined by a new companion visual – directed by TK – that sees Jennings hosting his own variety show, entitled “Hey Shooter!” “Fast Horses & Good Hideouts” is streaming now at the official Shooter Jennings YouTube channel. “Randy and I had been corresponding for a while,” Jennings says of the song’s genesis. “I was trying to get him and his wife on my radio show, but nothing ever came of it. Then I asked him about one of the YouTube videos they made of him reading out of the Bible, I wanted to play it on the Christmas episode. He wrote back, saying I’d fulfilled this lifelong dream of his to read the Gospel on the radio, and he signed it, ‘Here’s to fast horses and good hideouts.’ I thought, that would make a great song! So then I went and wrote it.”

Zack Logan

Zack Logan announces his debut album, single, and UK shows

Life’s tough when you’re raised by wolves, but you learn about life. Raised By Wolves is Zack Logan’s debut album: a 10-track collection of songs inspired by the singer-songwriter’s own travels and experiences of people and places in the towns and states of the American South. Born in the small town of Newton, Mississippi, Zack Logan grew up listening to John Prine, Townes Van Zandt & Robert Earl Keen. As he’s lived his life, Zack has gone on to soak up the best of the Southern sound, travelling thru Mississippi (via Tennessee & Texas) and is now releasing his own debut album. “Raised by Wolves is a collection of songs that were written over a few years’ span between Mississippi, Lousiana & Tennessee,” Zack explains, “I was moving around a lot.  The songs are about the people and places around that time, along with the feelings of being lost and found”. Zack recorded Raised by Wolves at Welcome To 1979 Studios: an internationally-respected and highly distinctive Nashville studio, specialising in vintage vibe and gear, where the likes of Alison Krauss, Steve Earle and Pete Townshend have all recorded (as has Zack’s own hero John Prine). The 10-track album showcases Zack’s vocals, guitar and perceptive songwriting skills, and will be released in the U.K. in August 3rd 2018. The songs cover a range of tones and emotions, from the fun of ‘Dogs Chase Cars’, with its jaunty fiddle solo, to the honest if downbeat portrayal of a small town in ‘Home I Call a Place’, and the lively confessions of ‘Trouble Doing the Right Thing’. To herald the album, Zack is releasing his favourite song from it, ‘Annalee’, as a single, along with an accompanying video. “Annalee has always been my favourite song to play,” admits Zack, “I feel like it’s a good representation of my writing and playing style, mixed with the music that I grew up on. I had just moved to town and really hadn’t met many people yet.  I was just staying up late and writing by myself in my apartment.  Annalee was one of the songs that came out of that.  It was written with more of a lonesome feeling than a heartache.” Annalee is a song of moving on from a failed love, seeing the flaws and being freed by a sense of closure. It’s moving, even subtly witty. Zack’s lyrics deftly capture a snapshot: a man looking back as he leaves behind a striking former love and one-time muse, who’d only love on her own terms, if at all. “’… I’m so sick and tired of writing songs about you,” sings Zack, “Well I used to find a needle in a haystack for you. And you could call on me when you had no-one to call, but Darling, I’m down to the last straw.” Annalee makes a great introduction to Zack Logan and will be released on all digital platforms on 11th May. Later this year, Zack will also make his U.K. debut at  the very first HRH C.R.O.W.S. festival at O2 Academy  in Sheffield, (headlined by Devon Allman, son of the legendary Greg Allman), between the 8th & 9th September 2018.
