Elles Bailey to perform at Steve Young's 'Corn on the Cob' music night

Elles Bailey will be taking to the stage at the December 2018 Corn on the Cob music night in Hertford, England, which marks the night being in operation for a whole year. Held on the second Thursday of every month, Corn on the Cob is ran by Steve Young and looks to promote upcoming Americana and country music artists in the UK. The night starts off with a Songwriters Circle, which features three acts and three songs in-the-round, before an acoustic solo/duo act will perform a stripped back and intimate set under the name of Up Close and Personal. The first of the full band line ups then take to the stage under Live and Kicking, before The Grande Finale sees the headliners perform a full set. The special December event will be held on the 13th at The Hertford Corn Exchange and will have Beth Keeping, Tasha Robertson and Danny McMahon in the Songwriters Circle, while Mark Sullivan is the Up Close and Personal pick. Bailey – who will release her second album ‘Road I Call Home’ on March 8 – will then perform for an hour as the Live and Kicking artist, while Young + The Real Time Players will round off proceedings as the night’s Grande Finale. Maverick gave Young’s most recent album ‘A Little North of Nowhere’ a 4* review, claiming that “you can hear the sentiment and soul that’s gone into producing this fine set of songs.” Tickets are available here.

Stephen Fearing

Live Review – Stephen Fearing @ Old Town Hall, UK

Stephen Fearing Old Town Hall Weymouth Saturday 3rd November Probably just as well known as the ‘folk arm’ of Canadian folk rock/alt country trio Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Stephen Fearing has forged an award winning solo career on the folk and festival circuit and closed his UK tour in the quaint surroundings of the Old Town Hall, Weymouth. Travelling light with just his acoustic guitar and multi-stickered guitar case, he could be forgiven for promoting his latest venture, ‘The Secret of Climbing’, a limited edition, vinyl-only release that captures the subtle emotions of Stephen’s vocals and masterful finger picking guitar work in their purest form, “unobscured by computers and studio wizardry”. The album features some of the artist’s previous work in this ‘stripped down’ form with the lead track Long Walk to Freedom celebrating the writings of Nelson Mandela, a highlight in what was a very enjoyable evening. Opening with a couple of his ‘travelling’ numbers, As the Crow Fliesand The Big East West, Fearing quickly slipped into country mode with The Things We Did a catchy foot-tapper with its innovative ‘who writes an obituary for the obituary writer’ theme. Never afraid to dip his toe into the political waters, Blowhard Nation questioned whether things in the US could really get any worse! The stand out number was undoubtedly Dog on a Chain, written in the car whilst waiting for fellow Blackie and the Rodeo Kings compatriot Tom Wilson to join him for a song writing session. This song fused into the instrumental James Medley with its clever changes of tempo from country through to ragtime and pure jazz. The evening was never going to pass without a couple from the Rodeo Kings’ catalogue and Black Sheep, a powerful number from ‘Kings and Queens’, an album that featured the likes of Emmylou Harris and Rosanne Cash, fitted into the set perfectly. Fearing is clearly a very talented and seasoned performer who can effortlessly switch from folk rock to poignant ballads like Love Only Knows and The Wheel of Love, written after a row with his wife. After closing with Every Soul’s a Sailor, the title track from his 2017 offering, Fearing was persuaded to return for what had to be an instrumental as his voice was ‘shot up’. Supposed to last just one minute, an elongated version of Whoville proved a fitting climax to a fine evening. If Stephen Fearing is under the radar, check him out; he’s a talent that deserves to be heard. John Roffey

Nathan Bell

Nathan Bell to release single 'A Day Like This'

Nathan Bell is to release his next single from the ‘Love, Bones & Stars’ album in the shape of A Day Like This. 2017 was fantastic for Bell as he picked up glowing 5-star reviews for his album, ‘I Don’t Do This For Love, I Do This For Love’ – a CD that deservedly won him a huge amount of media exposure. Bell ended the year on another high after being voted Male Americana Performer of the Year in a leading UK Readers’ Poll. The Tennesseean is rounding off 2018 in great form too, having completed his latest successful UK tour in support of TWO new releases, and returned for a string of high-profile dates in The Netherlands too, where he also has a big fan base. He had created a sensational impact earlier last year when he was flown in for a double bill show with James McMurtry at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival, and stunned a capacity crowd into hushed silence when he took the stage. Ever since the word went around that this is a singer and song-writer who needs to be heard, the audiences have grown and the reviews have been universally strong. Maverick writer Paul Kerr was one of those he impressed, writing: “Bell is the real deal…do yourself a favour and catch this true American troubadour. You won’t be disappointed.” This track, A Day Like This, is from the latest studio offering, ‘Loves, Bones & Stars’. The sister album also released at the end of September, was recorded live in Wales last year. The CD, ‘Er Gwaetha Pawb A Phopeth’ (In Spite of Everyone and Everything) gives a full insight into the potency of his delivery both as a vocalist and guitarist.

Ashton Lane

The Millport Country Music Festival Vault – Ashton Lane

Popular Scottish group Ashton Lane had a quick chat with Maverick about some of the exciting things they’ve been up to before they headlined the Maverick Acoustic Stage on the Friday night What can you tell me about the new album? How has recording gone? Esther O’Connor: Really good – we write in an interesting way as a band. We write ourselves, but we also write in collaboration with our fans sometimes and write songs based around their experiences and we call them our bespoke songs. That’s become a very, very important thing to us as a band and we’ve done lots and lots of them. It’s done two things – it’s meant we’ve really connected really closely with our fans through our music, and it’s been a constant source of inspiration because it’s specifically people’s real life stories they are telling you. They are often very moving and really interesting. It’s been a fascinating journey, so quite a few of those songs will be on the next album too. That’s a very unique way of songwriting, when did that start happening? Tim O’Connor: We’ve done that for a couple of years now haven’t we? Esther: Probably about five years ago. It was an idea we had one day and literally the very first day we did it, we just never looked back. People love it, and it’s been really popular.  The other thing you’ve done recently is a greatest hits album – how was it arranging that? Esther: Yes it’s called ‘The Journey’, and it was a really nice thing to put together. We did it with Graeme Duffin, who has a home recording studio we sometimes work at, but we also sometimes record at the Foundry Music Lab, which Graeme runs with his partner, Sandy. Tim: The Foundry Music Lab is where we recorded ‘Nashville Heart’, so it’s really nice to look back over the albums we’ve done and pick our favourite tracks. It was really good, and it was lovely to release something like that, which showed years of our work.
