Callaghan

Callaghan's 'Skin On Skin' out NOW ahead of April UK tour

Three-time BBC Radio 2 playlisted artist Callaghan has released her latest EP Skin On Skin, ahead one of her biggest UK tours to date, kicking off on April 17. Skin On Skin is the second of three EPs that Callaghan is currently recording in Los Angeles over the course of a year. Shortly after the release, she’ll kick off her UK tour in Liverpool on April 17th and then play a series of dates across the UK including her first headline shows at Sage Gateshead, Oran Mor in Glasgow, Lincoln’s Drill Hall and her biggest ever London show at Bush Hall on April 26th. The release of Skin On Skin is the latest chapter in the remarkable story of the UK singer songwriter who moved to the US in summer 2010 after striking up a musical collaboration with Atlanta based Grammy Nominee Shawn Mullins via Myspace. Skin On Skin was produced in Hollywood by Anthony Resta (Duran Duran, Blondie, Elton John), and husband/wife producer team Jeff Fair and Starr Parodi who have worked on scores for huge films including Harry Potter, James Bond, Mission Impossible and more. The songs were all written or co-written by Callaghan. Her writing partners include Jeff Silbar – one of the writers of the iconic song ‘The Wind Beneath My Wings’. The four track EP features songs that capture both Callaghan’s unease that politics and technology are dividing us from one another, and her hope and conviction that love and the human spirit will overcome. Lead single ‘Better Together’ is an uplifting, positive love song celebrating unity. Title track ‘Skin on Skin’ suggests face-to-face contact rather than living life through a screen. ‘Broken’ was written at the end of 2016 as a heartfelt reaction to UK and US politics and finally, ‘All Through The Night’ is a beautiful lullaby from a parent to a child. The LA recordings mark an evolution in Callaghan’s sound as she moves in a pop direction while maintaining the honest emotions of the singer songwriter. Firsts for Callaghan on this EP include using a horn section on ‘Better Together’ and a full 30-piece orchestra on ‘Broken and ‘All Through the Night’. The orchestra was led by top British conductor Nicholas Dodd who has conducted every James Bond score since 1997. The session was recorded in the evening in Budapest while Callaghan watched remotely via Skype whilst on tour on a sunny Michigan morning. A constant on all of Callaghan’s recordings remains her soaring, beautiful voice. The tour will give fans their first chance to hear the new songs live. Callaghan will also be performing tracks from The Other Side, her EP released in June, and songs from the final EP in the trilogy, which will come out in the summer. And, of course, they’ll also hear songs from her acclaimed album, A History of Now, including the aforementioned BBC Radio 2 play listed singles. “I can’t wait to release this EP and hit the road for my UK tour” says Callaghan. “It’s been amazing to get to know LA and work with accomplished writers and producers here on the West Coast. I write based on what I see and experience and the stories people tell me. I hope these songs will resonate with people’s own experiences, hopes and emotions and I’m excited to play them live across the UK”. Originally from Lincolnshire, Callaghan moved to the USA in 2010 to tour and record with Atlanta based Grammy nominee Shawn Mullins. In 2015 she recorded her second album A History of Now in Nashville and after five years of building her audience across the USA, returned to Britain to tour. Since then she’s enjoyed a hugely successful couple of years which has seen her profile build substantially in the UK. Highlights include two appearances at the massive C2C festival, multiple headline tour dates and festival appearances at Cornbury, Celtic Connections, SummerTyne Festival, The Secret Garden Party and Cambridge Folk Festival. She’s also played live sessions for BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris and Good Morning Sunday and BBC London’s Gaby Roslin and Robert Elms as well as at local BBC stations across the UK. Chiara Beradelli

Chiara Berardelli's Sea Monster: "…an emotional journey which totally absorbs the listener…"

**** Glasgow-based musician Chiara Berardelli has just released her brand-new album, Seamonster, the follow up to 2014’s My Big Mouth and 2010’s Don’t Be So Lovely. With this release, she has taken more control in every part of the process and as such, she identifies it as her most personal release thus far. Recorded in Glasgow’s West End, the CD touches upon an unusual subject. ‘Deep Space Hibernation’ was inspired by the two-year hibernation process of the probe Rosetta on its Space mission. Through the lyrics of the title track, Chiara confronts a topic which is clearly deeply personal; not having children. This is something to which so many women (and men) can relate to for so many reasons. ‘Somewhere New’ offers the opposite sentiment; the juxtaposition of sadness, despair and hope creates an emotional journey, which totally absorbs the listener. A journey I highly recommend embarking upon. Seamonster is available at Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. Visit www.chiaraberardelli.com. *Reviewed by Helen Mitchell

Tim Mcgraw

Tim McGraw collapses on stage at C2C Dublin

Country music star Tim McGraw has collapsed while performing on stage in Ireland as part of the Country to Country music festival. The 50-year-old singer was mid-way though ‘Humble & Kind’ last night when suddenly he dropped to his knees, then sat on stage. Staff rushed in to deliver medical attention and the concert was halted. Addressing the crowds, wife and singer Faith Hill, came on stage to explain McGraw was “super dehydrated” before saying, “I apologise, but I made the decision that he cannot come back out onstage,” prompting cheers and applause. A representative for McGraw later said in a statement: “Tim McGraw was suffering from dehydration in Dublin this evening at the C2C show. He was attended to by local medical staff on-site and will be fine. He and Faith thank everyone for their love and support and look forward to seeing their Irish fans again soon.” McGraw had already performed on Friday night in London, as part of C2C’s three-day tour in various U.K. cities. He’s not scheduled to take to the stage again until May 31, when he’s on the bill for the Soul2Soul tour in Richmond, Virginia, alongside Hill. The singer is one of the few country stars to speak out about gun control in America and has a personal connection to the Parkland school tragedy in which 17 students were shot dead.

Shropshire Musician Jonn Walker

Shropshire musician, Jonn Walker, releases debut EP and talks about battling depression

After spending much of his musical career playing guitar or drums in various bands, Jonn spent the tail end of last year writing and recording a solo acoustic EP. Within eight days of finishing the recording session, one of the tracks from “Partisan Palace” was aired on BBC Introducing for Shropshire. “Last year was pivotal for me,” Jonn says. “I had therapy for depression, which I’ve battled since I was a kid, I went on tour with a rock band for six months, I left a job I hated and I suddenly had a burst of inspiration leading me to write the EP. Yet I had dark, troubled times that actually helped me to speak up about depression. Over the coming weeks, I will be discussing depression, anxiety and therapy on Twitter and I encourage anyone who has questions or who simply wants to talk to join me.” You can read a review of Jonn’s EP “Partisan Palace” in the March edition of Maverick and you can find his track “To The Ground” on the free CD with the mag. Katie Armiger

Katie Armiger advocates for Tennessee anti-harassment Bill

Country singer Katie Armiger is supporting a proposed bill in Tennessee providing better protection against sexual harassment. Billboard reports that the singer has spoken about her own experiences, saying, ““I had an opportunity to have a career in an industry that I love, country music, from the ages of 14 to 24 and I was fortunate enough to be able to sing and perform all across the country. But in the last three years, after having been exposed to many different uncomfortable situations over much of my time as an artist, I felt pressure to choose between my self-worth and respect, or performing.” Armiger claims that being a musician signed to a record label “is a relatively undefined position,” since the musician is not considered an employee. The bill would, however, allow a person under contract to bring a sexual-harassment action the same way as an employee can. The #MeToo movement against sexual harassment is still ongoing, with the Oscars Award Ceremony including a speech by Frances McDormand to sign the Inclusion Rider. The House version of the bill will be heard by the House Human Resources subcommittee on Wednesday.

Lukas nelson

Lukas Nelson announces UK show

Since forming 10 years ago, the buzz surrounding Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real has been quietly intensifying. During that time, the 28-year old singer/songwriter/guitarist and his bandmates have played hundreds of shows and major festivals all over the world and built a devoted underground following. Lukas’ profile continued to rise when he contributed three songs and heavenly vocals to his dad Willie Nelson’s 2012 album, Heroes, their voices blending with potent DNA. Then two years later, life took another turn skyward when Neil Young decided to make Promise of the Real his touring and studio band. Young has guided the grateful young musicians ever since as they’ve backed the legend on tour around the world and on his two most recent albums. A seasoned veteran at 28, Austin-born Lukas grew up in Maui, while spending much of his time during school breaks in his hometown and on the road with his dad. “I had a lot of passions growing up,” he says. “I played soccer, I was on the swim team, living a Maui lifestyle, surfing and skateboarding. I also loved singing and wrote my first song when I was 11. I became obsessed with guitar, playing eight to 10 hours a day. I knew what I wanted to do from a super-young age, and I made my life about it.” He and his brother Micah played in bands together in high school, and they struck up a friendship with Uruguay-born Tato Melgar, a skilled musician then making his living as a landscaper, who taught the brothers the basics of drumming. In 2007, Lukas headed to the mainland to attend L.A.’s Loyola Marymount University. A year later, after meeting LoGerfo at a Neil Young concert, he dropped out of school and started a band with LoGerfo, Melgar and original bassist Merlyn Kelly; he named it Promise of the Real, referencing a line in Young’s 1973 song “Walk On”: “Sooner or later it all gets real.” When McCormick joined two years later on bass, the POTR lineup was set. The band woodshedded; averaging more than 200 shows a year. Drawing on Lukas’ lineage as well surrogate uncles like Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and the classic rock and roll of J.J. Cale, The Band, Clapton era Delaney and Bonnie and of course mentor Neil Young, they began to develop their own distinctive style of American music. “What’s happened with us feels similar to the career trajectory of The Band,” he continues. “They were already a great band when they started working with Dylan, who lifted them up, which is similar to what Neil’s done for us. He’s also given people a chance to hear what we’re doing and what our own songs have to offer. Then we played the Desert Trip with Neil, along with Paul McCartney, the Stones, the Who and Dylan. That was incredible.” Elated by the way things have come together so beautifully, Lukas is gratified that POTR have earned this moment and seized the opportunities that have led to this album—all perfectly capturing what he’d heard in his head 18 months earlier. “It’s just amazing how things have flowed,” Lukas marvels. “It feels divine in a way.”
