The full line up has been announced for this year’s Roots Festival, including: Richmond Fontaine, Ryley Walker, The Weather Station, Teddy Thompson, Hayes Carll and Cale Tyson Band. Taking place around the clubs and bars of The Marble City between April 29 and May 2, the 19th Kilkenny Roots Festival looks set to bring together a stellar cast of musicians drawn from the ever-widening ‘roots and Americana’ world for a weekend of music. Richmond Fontaine will play what will be their last ever Irish shows in support of their new album, YOU CAN’T GO BACK IF THERE IS NOTHING TO GO BACK TO, the band’s last after announcing a permanent split earlier this month. The hugely acclaimed guitar wizard and songwriter Ryley Walker makes his festival debut alongside Canada’s The Weather Station and UK ‘folk royalty’ Teddy Thompson, who will play a duo show with US songwriter Kelly Jones. Alt country’s Grammy nominated Hayes Carll will play a solo show, and Nashville’s psychedelic roots rockers The Delta Saints make their debut on Irish shores for a much anticipated Sunday night show at The Set. US/UK duo Lewis & Leigh bring their beautiful harmonies to Kilkenny and so too Loose Record’s Barna Howard who returns after a hugely successful visit to Ireland in 2015. Also returning Nashville’s ‘neo-traditionalist’ country star Cale Tyson will be playing full band sets and Indiana’s David Corley adds his own unique soulful rock ‘n’ roll to proceedings with two shows. Argentina’s Fernando Viciconte and Ireland’s Malojian, Tim V Smyth and John Blek & The Rats finalize what is arguably one of the strongest line-ups the festival has ever amassed. The ‘famed’ Monday night party closing set will this year be with local legends TV Jones Y Los Gatos.

The Official Charts Company and the UK Americana Music Association have teamed together to launch the UK’s first chart dedicated to Americana music. The Official Americana Albums Chart was revealed on Bob Harris’ BBC Radio 2 Country broadcast and published on OfficialCharts.com. It will highlight the UK’s thriving Americana scene. Providing a UK-relevant twist to the new albums rundown, based on sales and streams, the chart will also feature artists whose work is influenced by Americana. “I am so pleased to see the founding of a new Americana chart,” says Bob Harris. “It is important and appropriate that the popularity of this wonderful, vibrant and creative genre is acknowledged in this way.” “We are always looking for ways to spotlight specific areas of music consumption in the UK,” adds Official Charts Company Chief Executive Martin Talbot, “and Americana is a genre that is thriving in terms of new artists and events across the country. The launch of the Americana Albums Chart will provide a fresh and official insight into yet another fascinating genre.” “Given the integrity and authority of Official Charts Company, I couldn’t be more thrilled that a new Americana chart will be produced by this prestigious outfit,” says Jed Hilly, Executive Director of the Americana Music Association. “Americana is a vital and thriving musical art form. Its influences are global. It’s no surprise to me that the UK have recognised the expansion and legitimacy of the Americana genre before any of the American chart services, given their appreciation for music and the arts as culturally important.” The Official Americana Albums Chart will be published every Friday on OfficialCharts.com. The announcement of the chart comes in advance of the UK Americana Music Association’s festival, conference, and first awards show. Official Best-Selling Americana Albums of 2015 1. Mud Pie Records [usr 4] From East Anglia to the world In the fens and along the coasts of East Anglia, the blues burn with a fervour that the devoted each bring to their own individual pilgrimages and pleas to the unconverted to join this happy band. In the vanguard come The Dove and Boweevil Band with their stonking great second album THIS LIFE, an album born out of personal adversity, trauma and, ultimately, triumph, for this album very nearly didn’t happen as guitarist Mark ‘Boweevil’ Howes’ routine throat operation really didn’t go as planned. But not to dwell on such things, as Mr Howes and Lauren Dove have conjured up an album as good as anything that British blues has had to offer this year, 12 self-written tracks of blues inspired variety from the rocking opener Food For Love to the much more vulnerable closer Maple Leaf. Along the way we have the shuffle of Need A Little Love, Fireworks, but probably not of the sort with which we remember the failure of Mr Fawkes, and the wonderful East Coast Blues with its New Orleans feel. With a full band behind them and a deft horn section, this could be lift-off for Dove and Boweevil, with a full diary for 2016 and the wind in the right direction there will be no stopping them and I, for one, will be happy to watch them strut their stuff.
