Legendary songwriter Chip Taylor releases new album due on June 17

Legendary songwriter Chip Taylor will be inducted into the hallowed Songwriters Hall of Fame (along with Marvin Gaye, Tom Petty, and Elvis Costello) in a special ceremony taking place on June 9 in New York City.  The author of “Wild Thing,” “Angel of the Morning” and “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder),” among many others, continues to make his mark on the music world – his last album, The Little Prayers Trilogy, received massive critical acclaim, landing on Uncut magazine’s Best of 2015 list and was described as a “masterpiece” by Mojo.  In celebration of his Hall of Fame induction and the release of two new releases, Taylor will play a special show at the famed Cutting Room in NYC on June 29. Taylor’s new album, Little Brothers (out June 17 on Train Wreck Records, distributed by RED), is a charming collection filled with engaging, graceful songs that will make you both smile and think. It is the perfect soundtrack for a peaceful, sunny morning; a quietly fun album that also rewards close listening.
The cover photo is an old boyhood snapshot of Chip and his two brothers – acclaimed actor Jon Voight and renowned volcanologist Barry Voight – on the cover; but the songs contained therein are universal in appeal. Recorded at Athletic Sound in Halden, Norway, Little Brothers features Taylor backed by a splendid band that includes Goran Grini (keyboards), long-time musical compatriot John Platania (guitar), Bill Troiani (bass), and a backing chorus of Taylor’s granddaughters, Riley, Kate and Sammy Ennis. The album’s title track has special meaning to Chip Taylor. “As the song says, the episode I sing about is actually from a dream,” he states. “The morning after, I called both of my brothers to document the dream so it would never be forgotten. There was lots of good natured laughter in those conversations. Later that day, I further documented the dream events with this song.” Another special song in this collection is “Times Goes By,” which he dedicates to his wife, Joan. “Certainly one of my favorites of all the songs I’ve ever written,” he declares. “It closed most shows on my recent Sweden/Norway tour. I’ve always felt that, if a songwriter communicated an honest, passionate feeling – no matter how personal – it would connect with others. This song is a good example. On that tour, this song totally connected.” More prolific than ever, Taylor is immediately following Little Brothers with a mini-album, I’ll Carry for You.  The instant classic title track was inspired by Canadian golfing sisters Brooke (currently ranked #4 in the world) and Brittany Henderson, who caddy for each other, and is a song about the power of love.  The other songs have similar themes of Olympic passion, just in time for the 2016 Rio games. Amanda Pearcy's UK tour promotes AN OFFERING

“In the top division of her generation. Her writing makes me think not only of Lucinda Williams, but also of Tom Russell, Jason Isbell, and Gillian Welch.” –Rootstime.BE “Instantly recognizable as a hugely talented complete individualist, full of originality and diversity…” –American Roots UK “Tough, sweet, and hard to shake, An Offering contains some of the best songwriting you’re liable to hear this year.” –Texas Music Magazine Amanda Pearcy’s music is rooted in in her hardscrabble history, authentically grounded in her earthy, soulful voice. Testifying to her southeast Texas upbringing, and her resilience in the face of some of life’s tougher lessons, Pearcy’s songs carry a sense, and the sensuality, of the South. Her 2015 release and third album with producer Tim Lorsch, An Offering, was #1 on the prestigious EuroAmericana Chart’s 2015 Year End List as well as #1 on their Oct and Nov monthly charts.  It was one of Texas Music Magazine’s 2015 Albums of the Year, and Pearcy was also selected as one of the “Texas Music 10: Singer Songwriters of Distinction” in their Winter ’16 issue.  Her 2013 release, Royal Street, spent three months at #1 & #2 on the EuroAmericana Chart, and was #7 on the chart’s 2013 Year End List.  Amanda and both albums, An Offering and Royal Street, were John Conquest’s picks for Songwriter and Album of the Year in his 3rd Coast Music’s Best of 2015 and Best of 2013. Most of the songs on An Offering were written during a transitory year and a half after the success of Royal Street. Living on the cusp of homelessness, Pearcy cared for travelers’ homes in exchange for a temporary roof over her head, while a beloved family member was incarcerated in the oldest prison in Texas. It is not surprising that imagery from hearth and home and snapshots from the urban landscape are evident in the songs on An Offering, exploring freedom and confinement on the home front, as well as what we reveal about who we are by what we hide, what we give up, and what we offer. The songs culminate into a blissful sigh in the instrumental reprise of the title track, showcasing Tim Lorsch’s gorgeous strings. Winter Wilson announce new UK tour

Winter Wilson’s latest tour showcases their exceptionally well received latest album “Ashes and Dust”, the follow up to “Cutting Free” which made the Daily Telegraph’s ten recommended folk albums for Summer 2014.  Having honed their craft during many years as semi-professional musicians, the duo went full time in 2012 and haven’t looked back since. Their travels in “Talulah” the trusty camper have taken them across Europe and all around the UK performing a fine repertoire of self-penned songs that tell stories of everyday life which often reflect the bigger picture of this life we lead. (“Songs for local heroes,” as one punter said.) Kip Winter (vocals, accordion, guitar, flute) is one of the finest singers on the circuit, expressing power and emotion in equal measure “from melting to belting”. Dave Wilson (vocals, guitar and banjo) is amongst the top tier of British songwriters, with his songs covered by some of folk’s “greats”. But it’s in live performance that Winter Wilson really excel, bringing a sense of intimacy to every stage, welcoming audiences into their world, mixing songs with stories of life on the road. “This isn’t a performance – it’s a domestic!”  It’s folk, it’s roots, it’s blues, call it what you like but above all it’s quality. Kaity Rae releases second EP: THIS TIME AROUND

KAITY RAE is an artist we’ve already featured on our site, when she was invited to showcase at Folkstock’s emerging talent shows at The Islington as part of London Folk and Roots Festival last year. Their label arm Folkstock Records is delighted to return to the venue to release a second EP from Kaity who got a great reaction from the appreciative standing room only audience last November. Still only 18, Kaity has been with the label since 2014, and has received special mentions from The Sunday Times and The Telegraph for her tracks on the last three compilations put out by the label and produced by Lauren Deakin Davies. Kaity’s second EP is the follow up to her well loved debut Spark, which came out in November 2014, with the closing track garnering praise from The Shires’ Ben Earle who said he ‘loved’ the track It Is. This Time Around is a four track EP with a ‘new country’ flavour.  The just released opening track, Before I Knew,  has been an instant hit with the BBC stations, especially the specialist Country shows as well as the independent radio shows and has been played three weeks in a row by country hero Baylen Leonard, who was effusive about the young artist on his Sat evening Front Porch show on Amazing Radio. Kaity is continuing to follow her heart into the Americana/UK Country scene following an inspiring two week songwriting workshop in Nashvile earlier this year and winning a place on the PRS for Music songwriting session at the Americana Association UK Awards.  10th June sees Kaity Rae back at The Islington, for a free entry EP launch with some of her talented professional friends, namely Conor Coughlan and Emma McGrath. Conor was recently featured in a session by Baylen Leonard at Amazing Radio and Emma won the PRS for Music Lynsey de Paul award last summer, so a superb evening of bright young talent has been lined up. The EP was recorded at Cream Room Sound Productions and engineered by Martin Lumsden and produced by John Dines. It will be available from FolkstockRecords.com and Kaity’s website as well as at the launch on the 10th June as well as spotify, itunes and the usual digital outlets. To reserve a place for this free entry event please email folkstock@hotmail.co.uk.   You can find Kaity on  facebook https://www.facebook.com/KaityRaeOfficial/ twitter https://twitter.com/KaityRaeMusic instagram  www.instagram.com/kaityraeofficial soundcloud  https://soundcloud.com/kaityraeofficial website  http://www.kaityrae.com/

Emma King video premiere: The long-time Maverick artist releases new album today!

The power of Emma’s voice has taken her from Kingston-Upon-Hull to touring the US and Europe, receiving 5-star reviews along the way. Now she’s back on home soil to release a debut album. Her sound is an idiosyncratic mix of pop, soul and roots, with a voice that brings comparisons to Joss Stone, Annie Lennox and Christina Aguilera. Emma has previously worked with Grammy Award winning engineers including Chas Sandford (Stevie Nicks and Chicago), Milan Bogdan (KC and The Sunshine band, Shania Twain) and Aaron Swihart (Peter Frampton). Her debut album was independently produced, recorded at Snap Studios in London and mastered at Abbey Road. Emma’s writing style is open and honest, touching upon themes such as anger and loss, but with a sense of optimism throughout. The experience of living abroad is a prominent theme; she describes album opener ‘Devil City’ as being “about feeling completely lost in unfamiliar territory; getting pulled back in every time you try to leave.” Emma King’s career began in earnest when she received a scholarship from James Brown’s god-daughter Carleen Anderson (Brand New Heavies) to study at BIMM Brighton. She built up her musical chops performing in England and Germany and self-funded a move to the US for a five year period. This work paid off, leading to some incredible experiences such as playing in Sun Studios in Memphis using vintage tape machines, Elvis’s microphone and Jerry Lee Lewis’s piano. She has appeared on the PBS network, BBC Radio 2, ITV, performed live for the prestigious WSM radio station and supported acts such as The Drifters. HMV / Amazon / iTunes

Mike + Ruthy Band

The Mike + Ruthy Band has been making a huge Stateside impact since forming in Woodstock, NY, back in 2013. Mike Merenda and Ruthy Ungar (daughter of Grammy-winning composer/fiddler Jay Ungar who wrote the universally-known fiddle tune, Ashokan Farewell) had previously spent seven-years together touring globally with Tao Rodriguez-Seeger (Pete’s grandson) in The Mammals. The new band made its UK debut at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival back in January and went on to be hailed as one of the event’s outstanding visiting attractions after artistic director, Donald Shaw had selected them as one of his Top Ten highlights. They wowed the crowd as predicted when they played Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket, with reviewers describing the show as everything from “glorious and exuberant,” to “excellent” and “absolutely terrific.” When The Mike + Ruthy Band released the Bright As You Can album, it won instantaneous admiration on both sides of The Atlantic. Splicing styles from old-time to Motown, spare acoustic balladry to driving rock ‘n’ roll, allied with superb original song-writing, The Boston Globe called it ‘one of the year’s standout Americana albums,” while Pop Matters said it had put them “in the vanguard of today’s vibrant folk revival.” In America, the hugely-influential No Depression said: “It’s a record that will grab you and won’t let you go,” and at the end of 2015, the publication’s editor, Kim Ruehl, made it her stand-out release of the year. Renowned for their high-octane live shows, the line-up includes fiddle, banjo, ukulele, guitar, pedal steel, bass and drums, fronted by stunning vocal harmonies. They will have a full brass section when they return to play The Summertyne Americana Festival at Sage, Gateshead, on July 22, and make a main stage appearance at Cambridge Folk Festival on July 29 and 30.   UK dates as follows: Fri July 22: Summertyne Americana Festival, Gateshead Sat 23: The Atkinson, Southport Sun 24: CCA Glasgow Tues 26: Performing Arts Centre, Kilbarchan Wed 27: Birnam Arts Centre, Perthshire Fri 29/Sat 30: Cambridge Folk Festival   [wpdevart_youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrHNrKn1rHs[/wpdevart_youtube]

Platform Festival

Mercury Prize winner Badly Drawn Boy, American country queen Gretchen Peters and Radio 2 favourites The Shires will lead the Saturday line-up for Pocklington’s Platform Festival at The Old Station on July 16. Danny And The Champions Of The World, Seafret, The Dunwells, Orphan Colours, Barcode Zebra, Plumhall, Jake Morrell, Amelia White, Dan Webster and Wildflowers are all confirmed for the closing day of the week-long festival, organised by the Pocklington Arts Centre management team of Janet Farmer and James Duffy. “We’re delighted to announce the final day’s line-up, and I believe the range of artists performing this year reflects everything that Pocklington Arts Centre has become known for over the past 15 years,” says Janet. “We aim to build on the success of last year’s Platform Festival and establish the event on the national festival circuit.” As was the case in 2015, the Saturday bill will have an Emerge Stage on “Platform 2” in the station, featuring Daisy Allen, Jake Morrell and more names besides, plus an open-air Access To Music Stage on “Platform 3”, whose line-up will take shape in due course. “We’ll once again be working with Charlie Daykin and Access To Music, promoting young, emerging talent from across the region who’ll be performing on our outdoor stage,” says Janet. “This collaboration was highly successful last year and was a huge hit with audience members.” Badly Drawn Boy’s Damon Gough will perform a solo set in the wake of this year’s expanded reissue of his Mercury Prize-winning debut from June 2000, The Hour Of Bewilderbeast. “It’s been a curious, wonderful, inimitable, unpredictable career so far of major prizes and minor incidents, all possibilities and magic in the air for the Badly Drawn genius,” says the festival literature. Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Gretchen Peters will be accompanied by her band, as last heard on Yorkshire turf at Harrogate Royal Hall last March when promoting her UK country chart-topping album, Blackbirds, with pianist husband Barry Walsh to the fore. Blackbirds went on to win International Album of the Year and Song of the Year – for the title track – at the inaugural UK Americana awards in February. In 2015, The Daily Telegraph named Gretchen as one of the best 60 female singer-songwriters of all time, further testament to her gift for penning introspective songs covered by pop, country, blues and folk artists, such as Patty Loveless, Bonnie Raitt, Shania Twain and Martina McBride. The Shires, Britain’s most successful country export, return to the Platform event after appearing last year on the back of Pocklington Arts Centre shows in 2014 and 2015. Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes have become the first ever UK act to play the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, seen their debut album, Brave, go gold and opened The Corrs’ arena comeback shows. Led by Danny George Wilson, formerly of Aussie ex-pats Grand Drive, the blue-collar country soul band Danny And The Champions Of The World took home three gongs from the UK Americana awards, winning UK Song of the Year for Clear Water, UK Album of the Year for What Kind Of Love and UK Artist of the Year. “What Kind Of Love has added more than a tinge of Northern Soul, clearly has Van Morrison as an influence and nods a head to Dexys, all this wrapped up in a comforting blues-rock blanket,” says James Duffy. From Yorkshire, Seafret’s Bridlington duo of vocalist Jack Sedman and guitarist Harry Draper have just released their debut album, Tell Me It’s Real, while Pock Arts Centre favourites The Dunwells, alias Leeds brothers Joe and David Dunwell and their school friends Rob Clayton and Adam Taylor, will showcase their newly arrived second album, Light Up The Sky. Orphan Colours are an alt-country rock band from London, formed by Ahab singer-songwriter Steven ‘Seebs’ Llewellyn and Fred Abbott, lead guitarist of the sadly disbanded Noah and The Whale, plus ex-Ahab singer Dave Burn on vocals and guitar, Danny And The Champs drummer Steve Brooks and bass player Graham Knight. Barcode Zebra, the Yorkshire soul, pop and funk band, have changed lead vocalist since playing the 2015 Platform Festival, with Eve Maule-Cole joining Charlie Daykin, keyboards, Emma Whitehead, percussion, and Ruth Wilde, bass and guitar. Wildflowers will line up with the Bennett sisters Siddy on lead vocals and guitar and Kit on vocals, accordion and keyboards, plus co-songwriter James Ashbury on vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar and kick drum. “If you like breezy, supremely melodic, semi-acoustic pop with roots in both the UK folk-rock and US singer-songwriter movements of the late Sixties and early Seventies, then you’ll love Wildflowers,” says James Duffy. PLATFORM FESTIVAL Saturday 16th July at 1.00pm (12.00pm Doors) The Old Station, Pocklington Tickets £40.00 (Adult), £30.00 (Under 18) & £130.00 (Family Ticket) Box office (01759) 301547 www.platformfestival.net www.pocklingtonartscentre.co.uk

From tentatively performing a few songs at their local Redbourn Folk club in 2012 and later being asked to appear at one of the club’s guest nights, the group soon secured support and headline slots at folk clubs and festivals around the country, including Folk By The Oak, Folkeast, Gate to Southwell, Shepley and Bunkfest. These opportunities have in turn led to invitations to support many fantastic artists including The Fisherman’s Friends, Jim Moray, Megson, Martin Carthy, Sam Carter, Hannah James and Sam Sweeney, Treacherous Orchestra and Clannad.
