Maverick's Paul Kerr catches up with The Mike And Ruthy Band

Catching up with Mike & Ruthy Formed in 2013 by Mike Merenda and Ruthy Ungar (daughter of Grammy-winning composer/fiddler Jay Ungar), The Mike + Ruthy Band received plaudits for their 2015 album BRIGHT AS YOU CAN. They were here in the UK in July for a short tour bookended by appearances at Summertyne and The Cambridge Folk Festival. Maverick caught up with them after their fine show in Glasgow for a brief chat. Hi there. You’re only over here for ten days or so starting with your appearance last weekend at Summertyne in Newcastle. How was that? Mike: We were just off the plane but it was a really wonderful event. The venue was magnificent, it was nice to be presented in such a regal establishment. Ruthie:  It was a good crowd and we caught some of the other bands but the most exciting thing was we got to go down in the basement and cut a song to a 78 directly with a lathe. It was a totally unique experience. I’ve listened to those old type of recordings but to hear your own song back immediately. Te instant we were done we dropped the needle and listened to it, complete instant gratification. Mike: It was the very machine that Alan Lomax used for those old field recordings and it was like, it’s now or never because you can’t just hit “undo” if you don’t get it right so it ups the ante. It a real experience seeing them cut the disc; the shavings, they look like someone’s hair and they brush it off as it revolves, they call that swarf. Did you get to keep the disc? Ruth: They’re going to digitise it but they’re also going to send the actual disc to us. Mike: We played Celtic Connections in January, that was out first show over here but we’ve been to Denmark and Australia. And this weekend you’re playing at the Cambridge Folk Festival. Are you looking forward to that? Ruth:  Oh yes. When I posted on Facebook that we were playing there my mom got in touch and told me that I was there as a baby when she and my dad played.  I didn’t know that. I was about two years old and I’ve now heard all these stories about trips here as a baby, I even came to Scotland and apparently I learned to say, “Och aye” while I was there. Mike: It’s a landmark summer festival and our former band The Mammals were a very hot festival band. But once we downsized to a duo, had our kids and that we were playing small shows, house concerts and the like so it’s taken us a while to get back on to the festival circuit with a bigger band behind us. This is the summer that it’s really starting to happen. Cambridge is one of 15 festivals we’ll be playing this summer. Is there another album in the pipeline? Mike: We’re working on one. We have the luxury of recording at home which can be a blessing and a curse because it can stretch out over a long period of time but we want to take our time with it, we’re not under any obligation to rush another record out. Bright As You Can has set a pretty high bar and we want the new one to be just as strong if not stronger. Ruth:  We’ve probably recorded enough songs to fill an album but we’re still writing and it’s nice to have the chance to play the new songs on the road. On BRIGHT AS YOU CAN some of the songs like Chasing Gold, simple and Sober and Bright As You Can we’d been playing live for about a year and I think that really helps once you eventually get in the studio to record them. There’s a confidence in the songs because you been reaching out to people with them for a while. Mike: One of the songs we played tonight, When My Story Ends we think is completely done for the record, signed sealed and delivered. We’ll be adding songs to that but in the meantime I’ve got a long collection of protest songs that I think it’s time to unleash on the world so I’m going to leak those out on the web as “Ruthless Mike.” There’s only one up at the moment because I think people only want to hear one protest song at a time.

Charlie Daniels set to release new album NIGHT HAWK August 26

Charlie Daniels has never fit into any certain label, purposely creating a sound and blend of music all his own. The new album, NIGHT HAWK, stays true to that tradition with Daniels putting a unique spin on cowboy songs both well known and uncovered from through the years. The album will be available on August 26 at www.CharlieDaniels.com, FYE, and wherever music is sold. “Most of our concepts about cowboys, and all things western, are mostly derived from movies and TV. Well, the truth of the matter is, the real cowboys are not glow in the dark characters who go around fighting rustlers and cleaning out saloons with their fists. The actual working cowboy is a hard working, different breed who spend endless hours in the saddle and as Louis L’Amour said, they ‘ride for the brand.’ NIGHT HAWK is a tribute to the working cowboy and his way of life,” said Charlie Daniels. NIGHT HAWK is a reflection of stories from the trail told by cowboys around the campfire through the years. Many of the songs, introduced in an acoustic style, are obscure songs with deep meaningful lyrics, while some are classics presented in a new way. The album comes in the midst of one of the most important years of Charlie Daniels’ career. In early 2016 it was announced that he would become the newest inductee to the Country Music Hall of Fame, along with Randy Travis and Fred Foster. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum curtailed that with the announcement of an exhibit in his honor, called Million Mile Reflections, set to open September 23. Adding to the fun, Kid Rock, Chris Stapleton, Travis Tritt, Larry the Cable Guy and more will join Charlie in celebration at his 80th Birthday Volunteer Jam on November 30 at Bridgestone Arena.

Jimmy Fortune nominated for three GMA dove awards

The Gospel Music Association just announced their nominations for the upcoming 47th Annual Dove Awards, and Country Music Hall of Fame member Jimmy Fortune was nominated in three categories. All nods came as a result of Fortune’s critically-acclaimed album HITS & HYMNS, released in 2015. The project features some of Fortune’s closest friends, including Vince Gill, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Isaacs, Dailey & Vincent, Ricky Skaggs and more. The Statler Brothers member picked up one nomination for ‘Bluegrass Recorded Song of the Year’ for the track Life’s Railway to Heaven, which features The Oak Ridge Boys. The next nomination came in the ‘Country Recorded Song of the Year’ category for the inspirational song, I Believe, featuring The Whites. Lastly, HITS & HYMNS was nominated in the ‘Bluegrass/Country Album of the Year’ category. The 47th Annual GMA Dove Awards will take place in Nashville, Tenn. at Lipscomb University’s Allen Arena on Oct. 11. The ceremony will be taped and air on Oct. 16 on Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN). Jimmy Fortune toured, sang and performed with the legendary Statler Brothers for 21 years. He joined them first as a temporary replacement for Lew DeWitt, after DeWitt heard him singing at a ski resort and recommended him. Following an audition in Nashville, Jimmy was contacted by The Statler Brothers and performed his first show with them on January 28, 1982, in Savannah, Georgia. Due to the debilitating effects of Crohn’s Disease, Lew was unable to return to the stage with the Statlers, and Jimmy was hired as a permanent replacement in August of 1982. Jimmy and The Statler Brothers were inducted into the GMA (Gospel Music Association) Hall of Fame on October 29, 2007, and inducted into the CMA (Country Music Association) Hall of Fame on June 29, 2008.

Annie Keating – TRICK STAR

Annie Keating TRICK STAR Independent ***1/2 Powerful singer-songwriter fare with uplifting anthems and downbeat insights Brooklyn singer-songwriter Annie Keating has written a song and named her seventh album after the bike she had when she was a kid. The song is a celebration of the freedom the bike bestowed and elsewhere there are a couple of equally uplifting moments. These come from opening song You Bring The Sun and Time Come Help Me Forget, a song with a power-pop beat and hooky tune which belies its title. It’s not all like that though. The album closer Phoenix, the most powerful piece here, is enhanced by a sweet-voiced choir and builds to a glorious peak. Between times Keating treads familiar paths of lost love, regret and shoulda, coulda, woulda territory but each time brings something – an insight, a melody, a vulnerable voice, a truth – that makes the songs hit home, and hit home hard. The songs took eight months to write but only a weekend to record as live in a studio converted from a fire station. There’s certainly a spontaneity to the performances and an intimacy to Keating’s vocals that bring to mind a sweeter-voiced Lucinda Williams. Despite the championing of Bob Harris she remains a not particularly well known name but this sort of high quality release deserves to change that. Jeremy Searle

Florida Georgia Line are set to release their new album DIG YOUR ROOTS on August 26. “Our album cover says it all,” shares Brian Kelley. “Tyler and I are continuing to grow musically and personally. We really wanted this album to reflect who we are and our lives in this moment, but also where we came from.” Tyler Hubbard adds, “we both started out playing guitar, singing in church and writing songs so we wanted to let fans see our foundation – a deeper side to us. We couldn’t have picked a more fitting title or image for DIG YOUR ROOTS. The duo penned over half of the new music, further depicting an evolution in both of their life journeys. FGL’s soaring single H.O.L.Y. sets the tone for the new project and is “the right balance of change and continuity, and the mix of love and spirituality” (Billboard). Blair recalls: “A friend and I decided to dress up and go and look at nice cars in Mayfair, pretending we might buy one. The salesman spotted us a mile off! But he was very genial and, when he saw that we fell for an old Porsche 356 proceeded in giving us the full run-down. The song is based on that day.” However, in typical Blair style, he takes the lyric further to examine the divide between rich and poor. The album version of ‘356’ features a final verse that summarises the theme beautifully. “He looked up and started dreaming. Of a 356 of his own. As he mounted his bike and set off for the east side of town Via Marylebone” The track has additional production by Ed Harcourt and was mixed by Paul Tipler. Blair worked with Ed Harcourt on the first single ‘The Egoist’ which enjoyed 4 weeks on the BBC Radio 2 playlist, giving Blair’s music some well-deserved extra exposure. Blair’s career continues to go from strength to strength. He has won awards, toured all over the UK and overseas, collaborated with a variety of writers and musicians, moved to London and set up his own record label (Gilded Wings Records), all of which have informed, and are reflected in, his mature and astute musical musings. The Guardian described him as “an increasingly adventurous songwriter”, and it rings even truer now. Blair has the confidence and experience to make the music he has always wanted to. Blair is looking forward to heading to Australia next year for a tour and festival appearances and will be heading over to America later in 2017 for some live dates. Not an artist to miss live, on August 12th Blair Dunlop is set to perform in a secret location in East London, as part of the Nest Collective’s Campfire Club. The event – a regular Nest Collective night – promises ‘a magic concoction of spontaneity, all drenched in the sepia tones of firelight and tinged with wooded aromas.’ Dunlop’s new single ‘356’ is released August 26th. New album GILDED is available now.

WATCH: First Congress – Good Problem

First Congress are delighted to share the official video for upcoming single Good Problem, released August 19th 2016.  The video stars 28-year-old Australian dancer Sarah Jane Potter who explores the song’s themes of conflict and tension with movement. Sarah moved to the UK from Queensland to find the opportunities to properly explore her exceptional contemporary and balletic skills amongst the richness of our European culture. First Congress’ leader, Tom Van Can said of her, “Sarah was a real trooper; I’m a boxer and I know 3 minutes in the ring – the length of a boxing round –  is a killer and dancing the 3 minutes of the Good Problem choreography is probably harder and she danced the whole thing 32 times – imagine any boxer doing that!” Sarah danced in an old 1940’s tennis court now overgrown with silver birch, nettles and thistles. Sarah joked, “Where I come from the animals attack you. I never thought in England I’d get attacked by plants!  Stinging nettles, who the hell invented those?!” The video also has guest appearances from Clyde the Harris Hawk, who Sarah loved working with, “I love animals and I felt I had a real connection with this wonderful wild raptor”, she says, “I had no fear just respect!” First Congress are not your usual band, they are more of a musical alliance. Led by Tom Van Can – a multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, singer and composer – First Congress is a collaboration between singers, players and producers from a wealth of different backgrounds. Tender and stirring new single ‘Good Problem’ features lead vocals from welsh singer Bronwen Lewis (seen singing solo in the hit movie Pride). The track was written by Tom Van Can, mixed by Ash Howes and produced by John Reynolds. At the core of ‘Good Problem’ is tension – the struggle of difficult, hopeless and impossible love. “So often in matters of the heart it is instinct that leads us – the unconscious brain – and it takes the slow logical brain to catch up. When it does it carries a dagger in its hands,” explains Tom Van Can. Tom wrote most of upcoming debut album ‘On A Promise’ from a female point of view, which gives the record an organic sense of tension as he was stretched between the female and male perspective. “All the great music I love has within it the tension between anticipation and regret, light and dark, pleasure and pain,” says Tom, “I have tried to explore – from different angles and in various ways – forbidden, challenging, cataclysmic love and in the end offer peace, hope, joy, congress and reunion.” First Congress started as a group of like-minded artists making music to satisfy their artistic appetites. This was until BBC Radio 2 caught wind of their track ‘The First’ and swiftly added it to their playlist – it was a prevalent fixture across the stations shows with an unprecedented number of spins. This unexpected success and realisation they had started something special propelled Tom Van Can into action and plans to officially release First Congress’ creations started to form. Influenced by his love of Miriam Makeba, Edith Piaf and Nico, Tom Van Can has naturally written songs for female vocalists. Joining Bronwen on First Congress’ upcoming debut album is Irish singer Pauline Scanlon ably supported by Zalika King and Simone Daley Richards (backing vocalists for Adele). Other key members of First Congress are producer John Reynolds (Damien Dempsey, U2), guitarist Graham Kearns (Sinead O’Connor, George Michael), Kevin Armstong – Bowie’s guitarist for 10 years – bassist Clare Kenny (Edwyn Collins) and Iggy Pop’s keys player Seamus Beaghen. First Congress’ are excited to be releasing their debut album ‘On A Promise’ soon. Watch this space.   Watch the video here Save
