'Memphis Soul Man' Marcus Scott Joins Legendary Group Tower of Power

Electrifying. Soulful. Compelling. These three words exemplify the sound of the new lead singer of Tower of Power, “Memphis Soul Man” Marcus Scott. As a young boy, Scott would sit with his ears glued to the radio, mimicking every sound he heard. This fascination evolved into an insatiable desire to entertain and capture the hearts of audiences everywhere. His musical journey started in 2005 as a hit in local Memphis talent shows, and he quickly became known as the “go to” singer for all of the major gigs in Memphis. Larry Dodson of the legendary Bar-Kays gave him a call to collaborate on House Party, he has sung with James Ingram and appeared at Isaac Hayes’ night club and he’s been the lead singer of the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies’ house band. Now, he’s stepped into the lead singer role of Tower of Power. “Singing with Tower of Power is simply a dream come true, and it fits me like a glove,” said Scott. “I have always been known as a ‘soul man,’ but Tower of Power has me singing Soul with a capital S.” President Obama once again shared his summer picks via a Spotify playlist—an eclectic mix of hand-selected tracks on two lists that takes listeners from day to night. The vacation playlists include Tower of Power’s So Very Hard to Go, the second single from the group’s eponymous third album, on the nighttime playlist. Also featured are legendary songs from Prince and Aretha Franklin, some more recent tracks from hip hop artists like Common and Chance the Rapper and the musical styles of Manu Chao and Caetano Veloso.

HIGHWAY PRAYER: A TRIBUTE TO ADAM CARROLL out October 28

HIGHWAY PRAYER: A TRIBUTE TO ADAM CARROLL, due October 28 on Austin-based Eight 30 Records, celebrates a true songwriter’s songwriter, a Texas tunesmith who has inspired both younger and older artists for nearly two decades. Carroll simply captures entire lifetimes in snapshots like few other songwriters (Screen Door, Girl With the Dirty Hair). “I try to find moments that are sublime,” he explains. “They just last a little bit and then you’re back to your regular life and strife, but there are just these perfect little moments.” Carroll sketches characters with a novelist’s eye (Errol’s Song) and a poet’s elegance (Hi Fi Love) as hisvivid vignettes frequently turn personal into universal within seconds (Highway Prayer). Admittedly, eyebrows were raised throughout the Lone Star State and beyond as news spread about this tribute record. After all, the Central Texas-based songwriter has notched only forty-two trips around the sun, a young man by any measure. No matter. Carroll’s deeply observant stories simply deserve wider attention beyond that of his reverent peers. “Adam’s a songwriter’s songwriter, a unique voice who’s important to a lot of songwriters,” longtime fan Hayes Carll says. “A lot of people are influenced by him. That’s the measure of if you deserve a tribute record: Are there people you have influenced enough who will come and do it? That’s undoubtedly so with Adam.” Scan the roster of those who jumped when the notion was mentioned: Slaid Cleaves. Terri Hendrix. James McMurtry. Verlon Thompson. Walt Wilkins. Only songs with the most depth and weight turn those heads. “Adam has so many great songs,” Cleaves says. “There are only a couple of writers who consistently catch my ear and remind me of the subtle joy that great songs can bring. It’s artisanal songwriting. Never gonna be sold at Walmart, but it’ll remind the fortunate few that great songwriting can connect you to your neighbors, your fellow humans, even your own jaded heart.” Tim Easton doubles down. “Adam Carroll is East Texas’ own Shakespeare of song,” the East Nashville resident says. “Listen and learn, people. Listen for the details that make us human. Learn how to write about a culture that you are fascinated with. Find the details in behavior that make us all sympathize. His songs belong in Texan and Bayou anthropology courses, but mostly they should belong to your car stereo speakers.”

Red Sky July announce new ‘sister’ album VOYAGER

Award-winning trio Red Sky July are delighted to announce the release of VOYAGER on September 16th 2016. VOYAGER is a short collection of new songs, a sister release to the band’s March 2016 full-length studio record THE TRUTH AND THE LIE . The album is now available to pre-order from iTunes. Reflecting on the release of their third album in March, Red Sky July – Shelly Poole (Alisha’s Attic), Ally McErlaine (Texas) and Charity Hair (The Alice Band) – felt there were still more stories in THE TRUTH AND THE LIE to tell. “The album felt like it needed a sister for some reason, we are always working in the studio on new material and we just felt like the story of The Truth and The Lie had more layers to it”, explains Shelly.  The six tracks on VOYAGER have the signature Red Sky July sound, a hazy blend of Americana and alt-country with delicate female harmonies and first-rate musicianship – Shelly on vocals and keys, Ally on guitar, Charity on vocals and fiddle with additional steel peddle from Mark Neary. The mini-album was recorded and produced in the band’s garden studio in north London, putting their personal stamp on every aspect of the creative process. The carefully crafted compositions are both considered and personal, “Our life as a band has always had a story, what with Ally’s recovery (from a brain aneurysm in 2009) and it does feel like a journey sometimes… hence VOYAGER”, says Shelly. Opening track, House Of Cards, with its brooding harmonies and fractured melody is about a relationship teetering on the brink of death, a partner pushing too far. The playful 1972 Onwards is Shelly’s mini-biography, “We’ve decided we are going to write our mini life stories on each b-side or sister record from now on”, jokes Shelly, “this is mine, it starts with love, religion and dreams and ends with Prince of course!” ‘Like My Man’ – written with Kimmie Rhodes and Beth Nielsen Chapman at Glastonbury – took the trio out of the studio and onto Hampstead Heath. The track’s vocals were recorded past midnight on a laptop and SM58 speakers, “just to get into that sad, sitting up late, missing someone vibe” remarks Shelly. What Are We Doing Here is the band’s ‘killer divorce song’, originally written with Jack Savoretti in mind with friend Beth Nielsen Chapman, who is regular guest in Red Sky July’s studio. The title track, Voyager was written in one sunny afternoon while the band was in a wistful mood. “It happened so quickly it just fell out of our heads”, exclaims Shelly, “It’s a song about the best kind of love – a romance you can’t keep but will hold on to forever and it will hurt but in a great way.” Closing track The Longest Time, started as a composition sent to the trio by Paul Statham a few years ago, and Paul produced this final, revamped version. The band had free reign to take the song where they pleased, Ally added guitars and Charity the harmonies. The track is a love letter, as Shelly explains, “telling someone you love them in song for you can’t in the flesh”.  The band have dominated the UK Country Chart, been playlisted on BBC Radio 2, and have supported artists such as Steve Earle, Sheryl Crow, 10CC, Tom Jones and Jools Holland. Festivals they have performed at include Glastonbury, T in the Park, Cornbury and Isle of Wight. Red Sky July’s impressive achievements were recognised at the Scottish Music Awards where they were presented with a prestigious Tartan Clef award by Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy. Available to pre-order now VOYAGER launch show – Bush Hall, London – September 19th 2016 – Tickets

WILD IS… the debut album from Graham J out today

Graham J. is a unique and powerful singer. On his debut album WILD IS… Graham explores elements of jazz, blues, classical and alternative contemporary. The avant-garde, almost vaudevillian, presentation underlies themes of evolution and transformation which define the work. The strictures of Graham’s extensive operatic career as a rarely found tenore contraltino, though strongly acknowledged, are overthrown by his love of a broader breadth of influences including Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey and Karen Carpenter. A sense of mourning, loss and ultimately resolution permeate Graham’s choice of repertoire echoing the work of truly indefinable characters like Rufus Wainright, Antony and the Johnsons, Bjork. Graham’s new single I Miss You Most on Sundays is due for release in the UK on Friday, 5th August 2016 and is released via Irish label Crashed Music.
